CALIF-MUZZLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1916.
Application filed February 18, 1914. Serial No. 819,426.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM EMMANUEL BUFFAT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, R. F. D. No. 6, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented an Improved Calf-Muzzle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in muzzles which is particularly adapted to apply to calves to prevent them from suck- 111 The application of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which: The figure shows the muzzle as applied to a calf. The muzzle is applied to the nose of a calf and held in place by a head stall 1. The muzzle comprises a body 1 formed of intermeshed or interwoven small rings and two relatively large end rings 2 and 3. The nose of the calf is inserted in the upper ring 3 and the front or outer side of the body 1 is woven longer than the inner one so that in pendent position the portion below the animals nose is practically vertical, while the outer or front one forms an obtuse angle. Thus the longer, fuller front side of the muzzle overlies the calfs nose and the shorter inner side hangs straight down from its chin. The loose connection of the rings comprising the body 1 allows the freest motion and the lower ring 2 holds that part of the muzzle constantly distended and open to permit due freedom of the animal in feeding on grass, shrubs, etc.
In feeding, the calf lowers its head as in picking grass; the rings 1, having free motion among themselves fold up, allowing the calf to get its mouth to the ground. When the calf raises its head to attempt to suck, the muzzle automatically resumes its extended position about and below the mouth of the calf.
As feeding can only be accomplished in a downward direction, my invention is also applicable to cows, sheep, horses and other quadrupeds, as in pasturing orchards.
I claim:
The improved calf-muzzle comprising relatively large end rings which are practically of sufficient diameter to receive the animals nose, a cylindrical body formed of loosely intermeshed smaller rings attached to said end rings, the body being constructed with the front side longer than the rear side so that the end rings are at a considerable angle to each other, as described.
WILLIAM EMMANUEL 'BUFFAT.
