To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDRICH CHARLES HEGKER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, cityand' State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safe Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification.

In developing this invention it is my intention to produce a device which will in appearance and general operation be very similar to the ordinary hat pin familiar not only to the user of such devices but to the general public at large. My objectin so doing is to avoid the necessity of instructing the user in the peculiarities of the operation of the device and to offer an article that will be devoid of all mechanical and manufacturing difficulties or objections.

In general appearance my device is not unlike an ordinary hat pin except for additional ornamentation which materially adds to its attractiveness and except for a slight increase in the diameter of the body of the pm.

Thefollowing is what I consider the best means of carrying out this invention.

The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the completed device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion thereof.

Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in all the figures where they appear.

At 1, I have indicated a pin and at 2 a head; these parts may be of ordinary con- The head may be of more or less ornate design and I may find it advisable to have the pin proper of a slightly smaller diameter than usual. The pin body should be of steel and should be provided with a Sharp point as indicated at 3.

Secured to the inner or under side of the head 2, I arrange a tubular shield or thimble 1, and over the body of the pin I arrange an elongated tubular body 5; the tube 5 has an inside diameter sufiicient to receive the pin 1 in free engagement as these parts are to have a relative reciprocal movement longitudinally. The lower end of the tube 5, has its outer walls tapered upon an angle coincidental with the angle of the pin point 3.

Secured to the tubular member 5 and adjacent to the outer or upper end thereof I arrange a shield 6 which may be formed of pressed or spun metal or of any other suitable material and which may be also shaped in, or provided witha decorative design. This shield 6 extends upward to a point above the lowerend of the tube or thimble 4:. and although it closelv engages thethimble 4 I do not intend that it shall be secured thereto.

\Vithin the Shield 6, and secured to the tubular members 4: and 5, I arrange a compressible spring 7, which is adapted to urge the tubular members 4 and 5 away from each other in a longitudinal direction, and to prevent a complete disengagement of the tubular members I may provide a slight enlargement 8 upon the short tube a, and a similar enlargement 9 upon the longer tube 5. These enlargements may also be arranged to receive the pressure from the opposite ends of the spring 7, and may further serve to retain the shield 6 in its proper operative position.

In operating this device the user receives the shield 6 between the thumb and finger, and then with another finger depresses or forces inward the head 2 against the pressure of the spring 7. This movement ejects the point 3 of the pin body 1 outward through the inner or lower end of the longer tubular member 5. In this position the pin is inserted into and through the hat and when it has been properly adjusted the hand is removed releasing the pressure upon the spring and allowing the spring to retrieve the pin point into the tubular member 5, and now if the end of the member 5, which is adjacent to the point of the pin has been carefully finished it will be found that this member although it protrudes through a hat cannot become injured or cannot injure a person or thing that comes in contact therewith. Upon removing the pin from the hat it is only necessary to pull the head. 2, or shield 6. In the operation of removal the action is exactly similar to an ordinary pin.

It will be understood that modifications may be made within the scope of-the appended claims withoutdepartingfrom the principle or sacrificing the advantages of this invention.

The length of the body member 1, and tube 5 may be increased or decreased at will,

and the length,shape or diameter of any of the parts may be increased r decreased, so

likewise may the ornamentation be changed to satisfy special requirements. It is desirable however that certain of the general pro,-

Having carefully and fully described my inventioli' What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. 2, A hat pin having a head. and a body secured together, a short tubular member soll/ cured to said head, a longer tubular member telescoping int said fi st entioned tubular member and which the body of the pin is free to reciprocate, the free end of said longer tubular member being tapered at an angle co-incidental to the point of said pin a spring secured to'ea'ch said tubular memher and adapted to induce and limit the relative motion thereof, and a shield having each of its ends inturned and arranged over said spring and over the telescope 'joint of said tubular member and an annular projection upon each said tubular member and within said shield, said projections being adapted to impinge upon the intu-rned ends of said shield to limit the opposite movement of said tubular members all combined for joint operation as herein specified,
