To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT C. HEATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sumner, in the county of Lawrence and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Concrete-Mixer, of'which the following is a specification.
The'pre'sent invention appertains to concrete'mixers, and aims to provide a novel and improved appliance of that nature.
The invention has for its object the pro- Vision of a concrete mixer employing elevators' or conveyers for carrying the sand, gravel and cement upwardly from their respective bins and discharging the same into a mixing device, whereby the laborious'operation of shoveling or otherwise manually introducing the sand, gravel and cement into the device is eliminated.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a' concrete mixer having a mixing device of uniqueconstruction, whereby it will be thoroughly convenient and eflicient in use.
It is also within the scope of the invention to provide a concrete mixer having the features above noted, and which at the same time, is comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, as well as being practical, convenient, labor-saving and efficient in use. I
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is laimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. The invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved concrete mixer. Fig.2 is a side elevation thereof, portions being broken away and shown in section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2.

structed of metal throughout, and carrying a mixing device at one end. This mixing device includes a transverse concave 2. carr1ed by one end of the frame 1 and extending through an arc ofover 180 degrees. The forward or outer side ofthe concave 2 is relatively low, while the rear or inner side thereof is relatively high, as will be seen by reference to .Fig. 3, and the concave 2'is provided with ends 3 which are cut away or recessed, as at 4, between the edges of the concave. The ends 3 of the/ concave are provided with half bearings 5 at the crotch or corner portions of the recesses 4.
An arcuate section 6 has its lower end hinged, as at 7, to the front side of the concave 2 and projects upwardly toward the rear upper edge of the concave to cooperate with the concave for providing the mixing casing. The section (ihasthe sector-shaped ends 8 adapted to fitv within the recesses 4 of the ends 8 of the concave, for completing the ends of the casing, and the forward edge of the concave 2 projects upwardly above the hinge 7, asat 9, to overlap the hinged edge of the section 6 within said section. The upper or free edge of the section 6. has an inclined flange 10 which provides av hopper mouth for the casing to direct the sand, gravel and concrete properly into the casing, a receiving opening or mouth 11 being provided between the upper edges of the concave 2 and section 6. The ends 8 of, the section 6 are proyided with halfbearings' 12 normally cooperating, with the half-bearings 5. v
Mounted for rotation within the mixing casing is a mixing cylinder or drum 13 having a spiral, series of outstanding peripheral teeth 14 arranged to work close adjacent the concave 2 and section 6 constituting the casing. The ends of the cylinder 13 have trunnions 15 and 16 which are journaled between the half-bearings 5 and 12, the trunnions being seated in'thehalfbearings 5sand being held therein by the half-bearings 12.
The other or rear end of the frame 1 is equipped with a transverse series of spaced bins or receptaclesl? into-which the sand, gravel and cement may be shoveled or dumped readily, without the necessity of raising the same to an excessive height. The frame 1 also carries longitudinal inclined trunks'flS forthe elevators or conveyers, and the lower or rear ends of the trunks 18 are disposed within the bins 17, while the upper ends of the trunks overhang the mixing casing. The lower and upper ends of the trunks 18 are provided with the openings 19 and 20. A drum or sprocket wheel 21 is mounted within the lower end of each trunk 18 and a similar drum or sprocket. wheel 22 is mounted within the upper end of each trunk. The drums 22 are keyed upon a common transverse shaft 23 which is journaled upon the frame in any suitable manner, and the drums 21 of the side trunks are keyed upon a common transverse shaft 24 journaled to the frame, while the drum 21 of the central or intermediate trunk is carried by an independent transverse shaft 25 journaled to the frame. The lower end of the central or intermediate trunk is raised or spaced above the horizontal plane of the lower ends of the side trunks. Endless belts 26 are passed around the drums 21 and 22 of the respective pairs, and within the respective trunks. and buckets 27 are carried by the belts 26.
The cylinder 13 and belts 26 are actuated simultaneously, and to this end, a spur gear 28 is keyed upon the trunnion 16 and meshes with a spur gear 29 keyed upon one end of the shaft 23. The shaft 24pis preferably rotated with the shaft 23, and to this end, sprocket Wheels 30 and 31 are keyed upon the shafts 23 and 24 respectively, and an endless sprocketchain 32 is passed around said sprocket wheels.
The section 6 of the mixing casing is held in closed position by means of hooks or latches 33 carried by the ends 8 of the section 6 and engaging keepers 34 carried by the ends 3 of the concave 2. One end of the concave is provided with a lower outlet 35 for the concrete or grout.
The machine is preferably driven by a belt applied to a pulley wheel 86 carried by the trunnion. 16, although it is to be understood that the mixer may be driven in any suitable manner. 7
In operation, the sand, gravel and cementis shoveled or is dumped into the bins 17 in any convenient manner, and the elevator belts 26 being operated will rial upwardly therewith, since the upper runs of the belts move upwardly toward the mixing device so that the buckets 27 will carry the material therewith. The openings 19 at the lower ends of the trunks 18 allow the material to flow into the lower ends of the trunks so that the buckets will take up the material, and when the buckets reach the upper ends of the trunks, the material will be discharged therefrom through the carry the mate-- openings 20 so as to drop through the opening or mouth 11 of the mixing casing into said casing. The flange lO'serves to: direct the material into the mixing casing, to pre vent spilling, and the cylinder 13 being r0 tated within the mixing casing Will thoroughly agitate and admix the sand, gravel and cement. The concrete will flow out through the outlet or discharge spout 35, this being facilitated due to the spiral arrangement of the fingers lt which tend to Work the material toward the discharge spout 85, as well as agitating and mixing the material. The elevator belts 26 and their buckets 27 Y are preferably of different sizes according to the proportions of sand, gravel and cement desired in the present mechanism, the material is elevated and discharged into the mixing device in an eflicient and" convenient manner, and
eliminates the laborious operation of manu ally shoveling or otherwise introducing the material into the mixing casing.
When it is desired to clean, examine or prepare the mixing device,- the section 6 may; be readily-swung out of the way, by disengaging the hooks 33 from the keepers 34, so that the section 6 can be swung f0rwardly and downwardly. the cylinder13 and the a cave 2,.and the cylinder .13 may be readily lifted out of the concave, if desired, since the trunnions of the cylinder can be lifted out of the half-bearings 5.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a device of the class described, a frame comprising side plates; a concave connect-- ing the side plates, the concave including ends forming parts of the side plates, the ends of the concave being provided with through the rectangular notches at theangles of which,
bearings are formed, the concave extending transversely through. an arc of more than 180 degrees, the forward side ofthe concave being lower than the rear side thereof; an
arcuate section having its lower end hinged to the forward side of theconcave and projecting upwardly toward the rear side of the concave to form a mixing casing, the arcuate section having sector-shaped ends fitting in the notches of the ends of the'con cave and provided with bearings cooperating with those of the ends of the concave, the forward edge of the concave projecting upwardly above the hinged mounting of the arcuate section, the upper edge of the armate section having an inclined flange form- 10 ing a hopper-mouth for the casing; and a mixing member journaled for rotation in the bearings.
