17 b all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, DUNY A. SCHUTT, a citizen of the United-States,residing at Ch1-,
cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use-,
ful Improvements in Journal-Bearings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to journal bearings, and in its specific embodiment is particularly adapted for the bearings of furrow opening disks as used in connection with grain drills; the object of my invention being to provide a bearing of the character indicated that will be practically dust proof, simple in its construction and eliicient in operation. As a further precaution against the entrance of dust and also for the purpose of supplying lubricant to the rotative parts of the bearing I provide a pressure grease cup 21, attached to the upper end of a short pipe 22 that is connected at its lower end with the disk support, and 23 represents an oil duct communicating with the pipe and with I the angular cavity in the support. The boss 5 of the bearing block. is provided withlongitudinally arranged oil slots '24 that extend into the inner surface of the bearing portion of the block in the form of grooves that communicate with radially arranged openings 25 through the block at the junction of its:bearingand head portions. The head portion of the bearing block is provided with a counterbored portion 26 that receives the head of the bolt 9, and also forms a receptacle for the lubricant, and 27 represent grooves in the headot the block that facilitate the passage of the lubricantto the hearing surfaces.
Such a hearing as I have shown and described is, for all practical purposes, absolutely dust-proof. With an oiling device for supplying lubricant to all parts of the bearing in even quantities under pressure, dust will thereby be excluded. The yielding packing material prevents the loss of oil and undue entrance of dust, while the dust-exeluding ring combines to add greater eflicacy to the dust-proof qualities of the bearing. This hearing will be found to give the best results with all parts assembled and combined in the manner shown, although I am aware that it is possible to adapt the several novel features thereof to different arrange-- ber having an annular laterally extending flange thereon, a cooperating bearing member having a cooperating coaxially disposed flange extending into proximity thereto, and a ring of greater diameter than said flanges freely rotatable with respect thereto and normally engageable only with the upper surfaces thereof.

In a journal bearing, a rotatable member having an annular laterally extending flange thereon, a bearing member having a cooperating flange extending into proximity thereto, packing material disposed between said flanged members and inclosed by a flange thereon, and a ring of greater diameter than said flanges freely rotatable with respect thereto and normally engageable only with the upper surfaces thereof.
8. In a journal bearing, a rotatable member having a plurality of annular laterally extending flanges thereon, a member having a flange extending into proximity to one of said. flanges, a bearing block carried by said last mentioned member and engageable with the other flange, and a ring of greater diameter than said adjacent flanges freely rotatable with respect thereto and normally engageable only with the upper surfaces thereof.
4. In a journal bearing, a rotatable member having a plurality of annular laterally extending flanges thereon, a member having a flange cooperating with one of said flanges and extending into proximity thereto, a bearing block carried on said last mentioned member and engageable with the other of said flanges, packing material disposed'between said first mentioned flanges, and a ring of greater diameter than said cooperating flanges freely rotatable with respect thereto.
5. In a journal bearing a rotatable member, a supporting member, one of the same having an annular tongue thereon and the other having an annular groove receiving said tongue, packing material in said groove and disposed around said tongue, .a bearing block on which said rotatable member is rotatably mounted detachably secured to said supporting member, and a freely rotatable dust-excluding ring disposed exteriorly of said annular groove and engageable only with the upper surfaces of said rotatable and supporting members.
6. In a journal bearing, a rotatable member, a supporting member therefor having a laterally disposed angular recess therein,
a bearing block having a plurality of angular spaced lateral extensions thereon receivable in said recess and a reduced boss portion intermediate its ends and an enlarged flanged portion at its opposite end, a ro tatable member inclosing said flanged portion having a flange engaging with said boss portion, a bolt extending through said bearing block and clamping the same to said supporting member, and means for supplying lubricant to said angular recess in said supporting member.
7. In a journal bearing, a rotatable element, a supporting element having an angular cavity therein, a bearing block secured to said supporting element against rotation and having spaced angular boss members extending into said cavity and a reduced boss portion at one end and an enlarged flanged portion at the other end, a cupshaped casing inclosing said flanged portion and secured to the rotatable element, and a lubricant cup carried by said supporting element communicating with said angular cavity, said bearing block being provided with an axially arranged lubricant pocket and radial slots in its flanged end communieating directly with said pocket.
8. In a journal bearing, a rotatable element having an annular extension thereon, a supporting element therefor having a correspondingly shaped extension protruding into proximity to the end wall of said first mentioned extension, means for removablv attaching one of said elements to the other, means for lubricating said elements and means freely rotatable with respect to either of said extensions, bridging the space between the end walls thereof and protecting the lubricated surfaces of said elements against the entry of foreign matter thereto.
9. In a journal bearing, a rotatable element having an annular extension thereon, a supporting element therefor having a correspondingly shaped extension extending into proximity to the end wall of said first mentioned extension, means extending through said elements for removably attaching one to the other, a packing ring between the end walls of said elements, and means freely rotatable with respect to either of said extensions bridging the space between the end walls thereof and protecting said elements against the entry of foreign matter between the same.
10. In a journal bearing, a'rotatable mem-- her, a supporting member, a bearing block secured to said supporting member against rotation, said bearing block having a reduced boss portion at its inner end and an enlarged annular flange at its outer end, a cup-shaped casing inclosing said flange and secured to said rotatable member and having a laterally extending flange rotatably mounted on said boss portion, yielding packing material disposed around the peripheral surface of said laterally extending flange and between said casing and supporting member, and a pressure lubricant cup carried by said supporting member, said bearing block being provided With an oil pocket to communicate With the cup-shaped casing and radial slots in the flanged end to communicate With the pocket.
11. In a journal bearing, a rotatable element having an annular extension thereon, a supporting element therefor having a correspondingly shaped extension protruding into proximity to the end Wall of said first mentioned extension, axially extending means protruding through said elements for removably attaching one to the other, a bearing block carried on said attaching means and locked against rotation With respect to one of said elements, a packing ring carried between the end Walls of said elements, means for lubricating the bearing surfaces of said elements, and means freely rotatable with respect to either of said extensions, bridging the space between the end Walls thereof and protecting said elements against the entry of foreign matter to the bearing surfaces thereof.
12. In a journal bearing, a rotatable element, a support for said rotatable element, a bearing block secured to said support and held against rotative movement thereon, a casing secured to said rotatable element and inclosing said bearing block, said casing being provided With an annular groove adjacent said support and an annular flange surrounding said groove and said support having an annular rib portion received by said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the groove and a circular flange portion surrounding said rib, and a dust-eXcluding band loosely mounted upon the outside Wall of the flange surrounding said annular groove and the adjacent circular flange portion of said support in an axial direction, said band being free to turn upon either the casing or said flange.

In a journal bearing, a rotatable element, a support for said rotatable element, a bearing block secured to said support and held against rotative movement thereon, a casing secured to said rotatable element and inclosing said bearing block, said casing being provided With an annular groove adjacent said support and an annular flange surrounding said groove and said support having a laterally extending annular rib portion received by said groove and a circular bearing flange portion surrounding said rib, said flange portion being provided With a collar portion at one side thereof, the periphery of the outside Wall of the flange surrounding said annular groove being concentric and in line With the periphery of said bearing flange and provided With a shoulder portion at one side thereof, and a dust-excluding band loosely mounted upon the peripheries of the outside Walls of the flange surrounding said groove and said bearing flange and received between said collar and shoulder portion, said band being free to turn upon either the casing or said flange.
