Description

W. IVI. FULTON.
FLUSH TANK.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 2o, I9I3.

@Hom/w13 S ated 'valve 5 of the ordinary type,
form of drawings are designed for illustration only and are not intended for the purpose 4of delining the limits of the invention.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a view in perspective `of a flush tank provided with my improvements, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged. view in central vertical section through a rtiush tank showing my improvements in connection therewith.
In Fig.` 1 is illustrated the conventional flush tank 1 secured to the wall of a bathroom and 2 is the hopper connected through flushing pipe 3 with the tank 1. Water is supplied' to the tank by means of a supply pipe f1 having its delivery end with.d in the tank and controlled by .ai float oper- (see Fig. Q). The tank is provided vwith the usual copper lining 6 which slightly sets away from the tank wall at 7 to form a gl'iide pas* 'sage for an operating rod 8. The structure, above described,^is old known construction. l
Through an opening 9 in the bottom'of the flush tank 1, I insert a discharge pipe 10 which is sacuredH in place b clamping nuts 11 and is joined tothelfius pipe 3 in any suitable i'nanne'r.` To the opposite and upper end of the discharge pipe 10, I connect a bent tube v13 by means of the flexible corrugated metal tube 12 which is soldered or otherwise made secure to the discharfe pipe. The corrugations in the flexible-` tu are of-requisite number depth and spacing to permit the bend in t e tube to sink well under the normal water level in the tank to enable filling and siphoning action. 14 is provided on the bent tube for connecting with a link 15 which is jointed to the' long arm of a lever 1G pivoted at 17 on the wall of the tank. The short arm of the lever supports a sliding wei ht .18 adapted to counterpoise the weight o the bent tube 15 and normally keeps it in elevated position drawing. The short arm ing knob 19 located in convenient position outside the tankthrough a rod 8.
The operation of the device is as follows: Assuming the flush line and the valve 5 closed by operation of the float, the knob 19 is raised.' The lon arm of the lever 16 is thereby depressed an forces the bent tube 13 below the-water line. Water then fills the tube 13 beyond its bend and the tank begins to discharge through the flush 13. Momentary lifting of cien and maybe' of any,

tank filled to the water knob 419 issu t to start siphomng. Release' of the knob 19 restores the parts to their 'nor mal position, but the discharge fronlthe tank continues as will be readily understood from the ppilrllciples governing the action of aiphons., the receivin and the action discontinues.
refills under the automatic o supply valve 5 until the water end of the bent tube, air enters' The tank then ning of the ine is reached and the tank is ready for theY next flushingl operation.
From what has preceded, it willbe evi.
hon attachment erent to the use with their dent that my improved si overcomes the objections in of rubber valves by dispensing use and it also obviates the dliculties ac-f of metal valves on companying the seatin s due to sedimen the end of the flush p1 tary deposits. The ilexi in the Siphon resists the action of water and 'varying temperatures and ail'ords no chance for sediments to interfere, with its operation because of the rounded corrugations and freedom of sharp angles andseams in the connectin sections. f
While have shown the midway of the lon 'er member or`leg 'of thev4 Siphon, I d0 not eSire to be restrwfd this location, as it is obvious that 'the section may be directly engin of` corrugated pipe is required while' necessary extent of movement to giving the and further the the hee end of the Siphon;
siphon may be rugated metaltubing andsecure the advanen the water level sinks below le metal connection tofv made entirely of exible corflexible mami' 1 attached at'the bottom opening in the tank. The position shownr is' tages of my improvement, but such construcy tion unnecessarily adds to the cost and I, .'therefore, prefer the embodimentshown.
What is claimed is In combination, a flash :havin-gia disi hon 1n said tank, a exible tube connecting the siphon with said discharge pi and means for flexing said connection to ll the siphon and discharge said tank'.
