Beit known that I, Cosmo J .NILL', a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvaniajhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in"'Press Mechanism; and I do hereby"declare"the following tube" a full, clear, and exact description of. the invention, such as'will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beingzhad to'the accompany ing 'drawings,ancl to the l'etter's'; of reference marked thereon, forming party'of this fspecification.
My invention relates to presses, andhas for its object the'jconstructionfof a pr'e'ss mechanism suitable for pressing wet fibrous material to prepare it for fuel.
My invention relates more particularly to apparatus for use in a paper mill wherein paper is manufactured from wood pulp.
In the manufacture ofwood pulp paper the bark is first removed from the pulp wood by first soaking or steamihgfthepulp wood until the bark is soft when the bark can be easily removed. The bark is then so full of water that it cannot be burnedunder steam invention such bark was stacked up in piles and rapidly became a great nuisanceand was of no. use whatever. By means of my invention, however, the excess water can be rapidly "pressed out of thefba'rk andthe same can be thenutilize'das fuel under'the numerous steam'boiL ers with which allpaper mills are equipped.

Above the rollers, I), D, I place rollers, M, M, which rest upon the conveyer, L, with the journals, m thereof projecting outwardly between the upright posts, B, B, and B, B. Slidably secured between said upright posts, B, B, and B, B, are journal bearing blocks, m, which rest upon the roller journals, m, m, and are provided with extensions (shown in broken lines in Fig. 1,) which engage the side of the upright posts and serve to guide said journal bearings,-m, in their vertical movement. Secured to the journal bearing blocks, m, are vertical bars, N, which extend upwardly through the space, a, between the members of the upper beams, C, C, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. To the upper beams, (I, C, I seecure upright bars, N, to which are pivoted levers,- N which levers are also pivoted to the upright bars, N. 011 the sides of the machine frame I pivot weighted levers, O, O, by means-of pivots, o, 0, and to the free ends of the levers N bars, 0, extend downwardly, and are pivoted to the weighted levers, 0,-by means of pivots, 0, so that the action of the weights, O is communicated to upright bars, N, to press the journal bearing blocks, m, down upon the journals of the rollers, M. The journal bearing blocks m, at each end of the rollers M, and the weighted lever mechanism associated with each of said blocks m being entirely disconnected with the journal bearing block at the opposite end of each roller M, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, of the drawings, are free to be raised and lowered independently of the blocks, m, at the opposite end of each roller, as either endof each roller M, is raised or lowered by the varying thickness of the layer of material carried thereunder by the chain conveyer L, ed that during the operation of the machine, hereinafter described, each end of each roller M, is free to rise and lower independently of the opposite end thereof, and the journal bearing blocks m, resting upon each of said roller journals mare thereby caused to slide upwardly be- :tween the guide posts Bv B, and as each journal m, moves downward, the weighted levers 0, through their connecting mechanism N, N and 0, cause the journal bean ingblocks m, to follow downward and remain in engagement with the roller journals m, thereby keeping the rollers M, in vertical alinement with the lower rollers D. In order to cause the material placed upon the conveyer, L, to be spread evenly over the width ,thereof, I mount upon the guide beams,
H, H, in suitable slideways P, a transverse slide-bar, P, which is provided with fingers, P (as shown in Figs. 2 and 4), which fingers bend downwardly somewhat so as to rake the material as it is carried toward the rollers by the conveyer, L. To cause the slide-bar, P, to reciprocate in the slideways, P, I provide a rock shaft, Q, which is mounted in'a bracket, Q, secured to one of the guide beams, H, (see Figs. 3 and 4) and in a suitable bearing, Q on the base beam, A. This rock shaft, Q, is provided at its upper end with an arm, 9, which is connected with the slide-bar, P, by means of a link, 1, (see Fig. 4). The rock-shaft, Q, is also provided with an arm, R Upon the end of the shaft, F, I fix a wrist pin, R, which is eccentricto said shaft, and extending from said wrist pin, R, to the arm R, on the rock-shaft, Q, is a rod or bar, S, which, as the shaft, F, revolves, causes the rock-shaft, Q, to rock in its bearings, and, through the arm, Q, and link, 9, the slidebar and its fingers, P are caused to reciprocate t ansversely over the conveyer, L.
Upon the intake end of the guide-beams, F, I place a flat plate, T, to prevent material from beingplaced upon the conveyer until it has flattened out after passing around the drum.
In operation the driving belt or chain, F causes the wheel, F shaft, 1*", and pinion, F torotate in the direction of the arrow on the wheel, F in Fig. 1', which through the spur gear wheels, E, rotates the lower rollers, D, in the direction of the arrow on the wheel, J which through the chain, J and wheel, J causes the conveyer, L, to travel between the lower rollers, D, and the upper rollers, M, in the direction of the arrow on the plate, T, in Fig. i, so that, when material to be pressed is placed upon the conveyer, L, it is therebv carried under the rollers, M, which roll over it and press out the surplus water, which flows through the conveyer, L, and is carried away in any suitable manner, (not shown). Meanwhile the slide-bar, P, being actuated as hereinbefore described, causes the fingers, P to level the materialinto a uniform layer upon the conveyer before it passes under the rollers, M, whichrollers, as the layer of material varies in thickness, rise and lower, during which the weighted levers, 0, through their intermediate connections act to maintain the journal bearing blocks, m, down upon the journals, m, of the rollers, M. It will be seen from the foregoing that the operation of my press mechanism is continuous, and that after the same is in motion all that is necessary is to deposit the material to be pressed upon the conveyer, L, and remove the pressed material as it falls from the discharge end of the machine.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention so as to enable others to construct and utilize the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a continuous press mechanism the a continuous fiat chain conveyer traveling thereon in unison with therotation thereof, an upper roller resting upon said chain conveyer above said supporting roller and receiving its rotary motion from said chain conveyer, axial ournals on said upper roller, upright guide postsat each side of said axial journals adapted to maintain said upper roller in the same vertical plane with said lower roller whereby each end of said upper roller is permitted to be raised and lowered by the varying thickness of material carried thereunder by said conveyer, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a continuous press mechanism, the combination of a lower supporting roll, a continuous flat chain conveyer traveling thereon and in unison therewith, an upper press roller resting upon said chain conveyor and receiving its rotary motion therefrom, journals on said upper roller, upright guide posts at each side of said journals, journal bearing blocks having semi-cylindrical recesses in their under sides to receive said journals thereinto, slidably mounted between said upright guide-posts, whereby said upper roller is maintained in the same vertical plane as the lower roller, while said upper roller or each end thereof, independently of the opposite end, is permitted to be raised or lowered by the varying thickness ofmaterial carried thereunder by said eonveyer, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a continuous press mechanism,the
combination of base-beams, journal bearings secured thereon, a lower roller, journals on said roller mounted in said bearings, a spurgear wheel on one of said roller journals, a drive shaft mounted in hearings on said base-beams, a gear-pinion thereon intermeshing with said spur-gear, an endless fiat chain conveyer above said lower roller, mechanism actuated by said roller to cause said conveyer to travel over said roller in unison therewith, upright posts secured to said base-beams at side of said roller, a press roller above said lower roller resting upon said conveyer and receiving its rotary motion from said conveyer, journals onthe ends of said upper press roller projecting between said upright posts, journal bearing blocks having semi-cylindrical recesses in their under sides slidably mounted between said upright posts and resting upon said journals and weighted lever mechanism adapted to press downward on said journalbearing blocks, whereby said upper roller is maintained in the samevertical plane as the lower roller, while said upper roller, or each end thereof independently of the opposite end, is permitted to be raised or lowered by the varying thickness of material carried thereunder by'said conveyer, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. a
4. In a machine of the class described, the combination of base-beams, journal bearings secured thereon, a lower roller, journals thereon mounted in said journal bearings, rotatable drums mounted upon the ends of said base-beams, an endless flat chain-grate around said drums and over said roller, upright guide-posts secured on said base-beams at each side of said roller, guide-beams be tween said upright posts and the edges of said chain-grate, means on said guide-beams to prevent said chain-grate from sagging, mechanism to cause said roller to rotate and said chain-grate to travel in unison there with, a press roller above said lower roller and resting upon said chain-grate, and re ceiving its rotation therefrom, journals on the ends of said upper roller, journal hearing blocks having semi-cylindrical recesses in their under sides, resting upon said upper roller journals and slidably mounted between said upright guide-posts,whereby said upper roller is maintained in the vertical plane of said lower roller while said upper roller, or each end thereof independently of the opposite end, may be raised or lowered by the varying thickness of material carried thereunder by said conveyer, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
