To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD KIRBY Bo'rrLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to manifolding devices, and with respect to its more specific features, to sales books.

. One of the objects of the invention is to produce a practical device of the character referred to wherein an original and duplicate slip may be produced, the one having a mark intended to convey information, and the other having a mark intended to convey similar information.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a simple manifolding apparatus of the character referred to in which original and duplicate slips may be provided with permanent identifying marks or cuts, said marks or cuts being ordinarily situated adjacent indicia on the slips so as to convey information relative to said indicia to the parties holding said slips.

Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of the invention; Fig. :2 is a longitudinal section of a portion thereof; Fi 3 is an exaggerated view of a portion of the pad; Fig. 1 is a view of a modification of a detail; and Fig. 5 illustrates the appearance of the leaves when severed and marked.

Referring now more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a base or portion of a cover of ordinary construction having a complementary cover portion 2 hinged thereto at 3 being folded over of the device.

The numerals 4 and 5 indicate a pair of leaves which are arranged so that writing on one may be reproduced or duplicated on the other, as usual in this general type of apparatus, the duplication being effected either by separate sheets of transfer material, such as the usual carbon transfer sheets, or, as illustrated, by providing one of the leaves, as 5, on the side to be disposed adjacent the leaf a, with carbon transfer material 6. In the usual ap olication of the device a plurality of pairs of these leaves bound in pad form, as illustrated, may be employed, and this pad maybe held on the base 1 by means of a clamp of any efficient construction, but preferably by a clamp which will permit the ready removal and insertion of the pads, such as the clamp 7, fastened to the base 1 and comprising hinged members provided with teeth to grip the pad, said hinged members being normally brought together to grip the pad by means of springs 8.

While the invention when viewed in some aspects includes the employment of wholly separate leaves, the preferred embodiment comprises leaves, such as 4 and 5, each leaf comprising a portion of a single sheet folded so that one leaf lies above the other, or above a portion of the other. It will be understood that in normal operative condition the pad comprises a plurality of these folded sheets lying in folded condition one above the other, as explained, the several leaves being thus connected in pairs. In addition to the ordinary space for printed notices, writing, etc., on each leaf, each leaf is preferably provided with indicia of a nature to convey some definite information, the indicia being similar on each leaf. In the embodiment illustrated, the indicia consist of a series of transversely and longitudinally arranged columns of numbers indicating the amount paid for a purchase, the amounts being in duplicate alongside of each other and the higher amounts being also placed in duplicate alongside of the lower amounts in order to economize space and avoid employment of sheets of undue size. The indicia are preferably printed on so as to be capable of to inclose other portions 7 the sheets at one side of the Writing space,

as illustrated, so that when the sheet is folded the indicia on the lower leaf of a pair come immediately beneath the similar indicia on the upper leaf.

A cutter of any suitable nature is employed to mark both the original and dupliwith the leaves to effect marking thereof at predetermined points, and preferably at, adjacent or opposite to one of the indicia, as may be determined. The member 10 is preferably pointed so as to penetrate the material of the leaves and its edges 11 are sharpened so as to cut the leaves upon proper manipulation of the latter.

The numeral 12 indicates a member adapted to be utilized in severing the sheet or a leaf thereof, and preferably such severing takes place on a straight line for the greater portion of the dimension of the leaf severed, said member 12 preferably having a straight cutting edge 13 for this purpose. This member 12 is disposed to rest upon the leaves adjacent their folded edges and may be pressed against them so as to hold a pair of leaves stationary relative to each other while being severed. The cutter 10 is preferably carried by the member 12 and is movable relative to the latter in the direction of the edge 13 so that said member 10 may be placed in line With any indicium desired. Any efiicient means may be employed for so connecting the member 10 to the member 12 as to permit relativemovement. In the present embodiment the member 10 is carried by a flat plate 1 f resting against the lower face of the member 12, said plate extending around the edge 15 of the member 12 and thence into position opposite the up per'face of the'member 12, a pin 16 or other suitable means being employed to secure the marking cutter to the main severing cutter 1 2 so as to permit the marking cutter to be moved relatively to the main severing cutter, as explained. If desired, a sight opening, as 17, may be provided in the pin 16 for the accurate observations of the indicium directly therebeneath. The member 12 is provided with a slot 18 to accommodate the pin 16, permitting the marking cutter to be moved from one end thereof to the other, and through this slot the indicia may be observed. Preferably, also, the marking cutter 10 projects beyond the severing edge 13 and is of such a length as to provide a substantial tongue or tip on one of the severed leaves and a corresponding slot on the other leaf, as will be hereinafter explained. r

The tooth is attached to the base 1 through the instrumentality of the main severing member 12, this latter being carried by a pair of metallic resilient arms or bail 19 secured to the base 1, as by being soldered or otherwise fastened to the lower member of the clamp 7. The arms 19 Serve to hold the cutter and the main severing member in general predetermined relationship on the base 1 and at the same time permit said members to be moved in a direction across the leaves and toward and away from the plane of the base 1. Thus, by lifting the member 12 the pad of leaves may be conveniently placed beneath said member and entered between the jaws of the clamp 7. Also the main severing member 12 is adjustably connected with the arms 19 so that it may be moved toward and from the opposite side of the pad, this feature adapting the marking member 10 to be moved so as to cooperate with the columns of higher or lower indicia hereinbefore referred to. Any suitable means for permitting the adjustment of the main severing member 12 relative to the arms 19 may be employed, in the present embodiment the members 19 passing through I openings 20 in cars in the member 12, the limit of movement in one direction being determined by the removable screw nuts 21. The fit of th members 19 in the openings 20 should be fairly tight so that the member 12 shall be yieldingly maintained in any adjusted position. Shoulders 21 may be provided on arms 19 to limit the extent of adjustment in the other direction.

The operation of the device is as follows: The pad, consisting of the sheets folded as explained so as to provide the plurality of pairs of leaves, is inserted beneath the member 12 and the stub end entered between the jaws of the clamp 7 so as to be held thereby.

The operator then moves the marking cutter so that it lies above that indicium corresponding to the amount of the purchase. If said indicium is in the first two columns and the main severing member 12 is at the edge of the leaves, it will be only necessary to move the tooth or cutter longitudinally of the mem- The device is then ready for opber 12. If the required indicium is in the second two columns, that is, the two inner columns, it may be necessary to adjust the main severing member 12 on the arms 19. Having placed the cutter above the required indicium, the cutting edge 13 should lie in the line between two columns of indicia. By now grasping the outer edge 22 of the uppermost leaf 5 and bringing it toward the cutter, the latter may be caused to penetrate said uppermost leaf and continued movement will cause said leaf to be cut by the lateral edges of the cutter 10 prior to complete disconnection of said leaves from each other by the straight edge 13. During this operation it is preferable to press the main severing member 12 against the leaves, this member then operating as a gripper jaw, the pad being gripped between the member 12 and the base 1, the leaves being thus held stationary relatively to each other during the aforesaid manipulation. After the cutter has operated upon the topmost leaf or upon the portion thereof referred to, said leaf is severed by cooperation with the straight edge 13 under the manipulation of the operator, preferably by starting the severing cut at one edge of said leaf and continuing it to the otherf It will be observed that by the cutter 10 the leaf 5'is not only cut so as to provide an indentation or recess therein opposite the desired indicium, but simultaneously with said cutting operation that portion of the lower leaf 4 which, being folded, lies in the plane of the upper leaf, is also cut on identical lines with the upper leaf, a tongue or tip 24 being formed in that portion of the lower leaf adjacent the edge severed by the cutter 18, the tooth extending from the edge of the portion of the sheet which is an extension of the lower leaf. The foregoing operations having been accomplished, the original leaf, which is to be given the customer, is provided with an indentation directly opposite the indicium which indicates the amount of the purchase, while the lower leaf, which is to be retained by the merchant, is provided with a projecting tip or tongue opposite a similar indicium. Thus the two leaves or slips are il'lfllkffifil opposite similar indicia by the provision of a tongue or a tooth, respectively, as the case may be. The slip retained by the merchant will be an assurance that the tip in question has been, taken from the original check or slip.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is also to'be under stood that the language used in the follow ing claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a mat ter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

l-laving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the character described, in combination, a plurality of superposed sheets, each having an original record portion folded to partially overlie a multiplicate record portion, said portions having registering indicia adjacent the fold, means to hold said sheets together along the free edges of said multiplicate portions, and a cutter to bear on said sheets adjacent the folds thereof and adjustable to overlie a selected indicium thereon.

2. In a device of the character described, in combination, a plurality of superposed sheets, each having an original record portion with a carbonized back folded to partially overlie a duplicate record portion, said portions having registering indicia adjacent the fold, binding means retaining said sheets together along the free edges of said duplicate portions, and a cutter springpressed against said sheets adjacent the folds thereof and adjustable to overlie a selected indicium thereon.

8. In a device of the character combination, a

described, pad support, gripping and a springpr ssed clamping device carried by said support and adjustable toward and from said gripping means.

4. In a device of the character described, in combination, a pad support, gripping means at one end thereof and a springpressed cutter member carried at the other end of said support and adjustable parallel to and at right angles to said gripping means.

5. In a device of the character described, in combination, a pad support, gripping means at one edge thereof, and a pivotally mounted cutter member carried by said support and adjustable toward and from said gripping means.
