Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Uct. 24L, 191M").
Application filed May 3, 1916. Serial No. 95,199.
T a all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVheelbarrow-ll-Iandies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
f lhis invention relates to a wheelbarrow handle.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of an adjustable handle which is so constructed that the effective length of the same may be varied so that the power required to lift the load in the wheelbarrow may be reduced.
A further object of the invention resides in so constructing the device that it will be exceedingly simple to manufacture and easily operated.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same applied to a wheelbarrow, only a portion of the latter bein shown however; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectiona view taken longitudinally of the handle showing the means for locking the sections of the handle together and the operating means for the locking means; Fig. 3 is a fragmental view of the interior member of the handle, and Fig. 4 is a detail of the actuating means.
In the drawing I have illustrated a wheelbarrow l. Extending rearwardly from this wheelbarrow a-t the'opposite sides thereof are tubular members 2 when are open at their rear ends. lar members are telescopic members 3 which are provided with grip portions l. lBy moving these members 3 inwardly and outwardly in the members 2 the effective lengths of the handles may be varied as the variation in the load requires or in other words the power arm of the lever may be varied. In order that the members 3 may be secured within the members 2 at a plurality of Slidably mounted in these tubupoints, I have mounted a plate 5 on each of the members 3 which is secured in place by screws 6 and covers a correspondingly shaped aperture in the said member. Depending from this plate 5 are ears 7 between which a latch member 8 is pivoted, the bill 9 of which'member extends upwardly through the plate 5 and is adapted to project through any one of a series of apertures 10 in the member 2. Secured to this latch member 8, at 11, is a rod 12 which extends rearwardly through the members 3 and is secured to a'slide 13 which is mounted adjacent the grip portion 4: and is provided with a trigger 14 which extends through a slot in the member 3 and by means of which the slide may be moved to actuate the latch member 8 and retract the bill 9 thereof. Secured to this slide is a spring 15 which is at its other end secured to the member 3 and is constructed and arranged to return the slide to its initial or normal position. The bill 9 of the latch 8 is projected normally through the opening in the plate 5 by a coil spring 16 which is interposed between an arm of'the latch member and plate 5. It will thus be seen that when the member 3 of the handle is in any particular position in the member 2 that the bill 9 of the latch member will'engage one of the holes 10 in the member 2 and consequently the said members 2 and 3 will be held together. It will be further seen that the bill may be disengaged by means of the slide 13 so that the member 3 may be moved inwardly or outwardly with relation to the member 2 of the handle.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes ma be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim.
WhatI claim is In a wheelbarrow handle, the combination with a tubular member, of a telescopic member slidably mounted therein, a latch member carried by the telescopic member, the said tubular member having a plurality of longitudinally arranged holes for the reception of the latch member, a. spring for normally projecting the latch member into In testimony whereof,I afiix my signature,
said hole, a slide mounted Within the telein the presence of two witnesses.
' scopic member and having a trigger project JOSEPH SNYDER.
ing therethrough, a rod connecting the slide Witnesses: 5 and the latch member and resilient means EDWIN A. KoHL,
' for moving the slide in one direction. GEORGE I. FUcHs.
