PAPER-TRIMMING APPARATUS FOR PAPER-HANGERS USE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 29, 1918. Serial No. 81,088.
To all 11. 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, PIETRO SCARDINO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Trimming A pparatus for Paper-Hangers Use, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to paper-trimming devices, particularly those used by paperhangers, and its chief object'is to provide improved means for the purpose, of simple and durable construction by which aolean, straight out can be made.
To this and other ends the invention consists in the novel features of construction and combinations of elements hereinafter described.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the apparatus in use. Fig. 2 is a side view of the trimmer. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an end-plan view of the trimmer handle, showing the spirit level.
The apparatus includes a straight-edge 10, of wood, having at one side-edge a flat rail 11 formed of a fiat strip of metal, preferably brass, mounted on aflat rib 12 made by cutting a groove 13 in the top of the straight-edge and a rabbet 14 in the edge thereof. The overhanging edges of the strip 11 thus constitute guide rails on which the trimmer slides.
The trimmer comprises a base 15, formed of a flat piece of metal having lateral extensions or fingers 16 at its ends, which are bent under to embrace the edges of the rail 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. On the base plate two standards or vertical guides 17 are mounted, embraced by tubular slides 18 formed by lateral extensions 19 or arms on a carrier 20. The latter is composed of a flat piece of metal, and its extensions or arms are bent at right angles and have their end-portions bent to tubular form to provide the aforesaid slides 18. The carrier is thus mounted to slide vertically on the standards 17. Journaled in the center of the carrier is a rotary cutting or trimming disk 21 of the usual type. Coil springs 22, encircling the standards below the slides 18, normally hold the carrier in its upper posiscribed usually sufier hard usage, and in time the cutting disk or its pivot show Wear, with the result that the disk can take an inclined position and can wabble as the trimmer is drawn along the straight-edge, thus producing a wavy cut. In my device this defect is overcome by providing a guideplate 26 against which the upper portion of the disk bears lightly, thus preventing such portion from rocking inwardly, While the lower portion is prevented from inward displacement by the face of the straight-edge. The guide-plate 26 is formed of a fiat strip of metal, and is'fastened to the top of the standards 17 by means of wingnuts 27 so that it can be readily removed when desired, to permit removal of the carrier 20. Wear on the edge of the guide-plate and on the face of the straight-edge can be compensated for byusing a thicker washer 28 Snderthe nut on the pivot of the trimming is z.
Fixed in a transverse groove 29 in the end of the handle 24 is a small spirit level 30, Fig. 5. To determine whether or not the edge of the paper is vertical when applied to the wall it is only necessary to put the trimmer on the straight-edge and place the latter with its trimming edge in coincidence with the edge of the paper before the latter dries. The level will then be horizontal and parallel with the wall, and will at once indicate whether the paper is vertical. If not, it can be pulled off and re-applied. This feature is of great value in many instances, especially when a striped paper is being used. In such case a very slight deviation from the exact vertical is a serious defect in the work.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction herein described, but can be embodied in other forms without departure from its spirit.
I claim:
