To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ROBERT E, Frvnv, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, Stateof lllinois, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Flush- Valves, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to that type A of flushing valves for water closet and like uses, in which the slow closing of the valve is attained by the slow inflow of pressure fluid into a fluid motor associated with the movable member of the valve, an example of which is shown in my former Patent No. 1,132,570, dated March aa, 1915. and the present improvement has for its ob]ect to provide a compart, efficient and economical structural formation and association of parts by which an accurate and convenient regulation of the flow of fluid through the valve at each operation thereof, is attained, all 'as will hereinafter more fully appear. f

Referring to the drawings. 1 designates the open top casing or housing of thevalve, having the usualinlet and outlet chambers 2 and 3 and inlet and outlet necks 41 and 5 at its lower end, which latter are preferably arranged in the right angle relation, and 5 in vertical alinement with the valve mechanism and accessories of the structure.
6 designates a lower partition of an approximately Vshape arranged within the casing 1 from the outlet chamber 3 thereof, with said outlet chamber in communication with the space above the uppermost portion of the partition 6 as shown.'
9 vdesignates an intermediate transverse and separating the inlet chamber 2- partition arranged in the interior of the cas ing 1 in spaced relation to the partition 6 aforesaid, with the intervening space forming a piston chamber 10 for the piston of the main valve hereinafter described.
11 designates a closure cap screwing into a screw threaded portion of the upper bore of the casing 1 and. having spaced relation to the intermediate partition 9, with the intervening space forming a containing chainber 12 for the operating mechanism of the valve hereinafter described. In the construction shown the containing chamber 12 is of a larger diameter than the piston chamber 10 aforesaid, so that the intermediate partition 9 may beI introduced through said containing chamber and screwed into place in the upper end of the piston chamber, which is screw-threaded for this purpose, and provides la structure capable of ready and convenient assemblage.
18, designates a non-circular head formed on the top of the partition 9 for the conu venient turning of the same by the operator.
14: designates .a central orifice formed in the head 13 and'partiti on 9, and constituting a communicating passage between the pisopen condition of the auxiliary valve head which controls said orifice 1i.
15 designates an `annular valve seat carried on the under side of the partition 9 in concentric relation to the orifice 14.
16 designates a. vertical passage formed in the wall ofthe casing 1, and connecting the containing chamber 12 with the outlet chamber 3 together as shown.
17 designates a non-circular head formed on the top of the closure cap 11 for the convenient turning of the same by the operator.
18 designates a central guide bore formed in the cap 11 and adapted to provide a guiding means for the upper end of the valve stem hereinafter described.
/19 .designates a tubular valve stem arrangedl vertically in the main casing and in axial relation to the piston chamber 10, and orifices 7 vand 111 aforesaid, with its upper end adapted for guiding engagement with the guide bore 18 of the closure cap above described.
20 designates a piston moving in the piston chamber 10, with its lower end carrying a valve head 21 adapted for engagement with the valve seat 8 in the lower and norusual operating v and providing va mal position of the piston. The piston 20 is of any usual hydraulic type, Ypreferal'ily the cupped ring .form shown, and in the present improvement is formed with a central cyl1ndrical bore in which the lower end of the tubular valve stem 19 is adapted independent movement in the opening and closing operaiions of the mechanism. 22 designates a fixed collar surrounding tlu-, upp\ r portion ofthe valve stem 19 with its under surface forming an abutment for a spring 23, which encircles the valve stem, and tends to yieldingly force said valve stem in an upward direction.
24 designates a'rock-arm, preferably of the forked form shown, arranged in the containing` chamber 12 aforesaid, with its free end having bearing against the upper su rfare of the fixed collar 22, and adapted to impart a downward movement to the valve stem 19, aforesaid.
25 designates a rock-shaft extending transversely through the upper end of the casing 1 and carrying the rock arm 24 aforesaid means for actuating the same. And to such end the rock shaft 25 will be connected with a moving part of the water closet or like mechanism, to receive automatic operation therefrom.
2G designates the auxiliary valve head or member heretofore referred to and which is fixedly secured to the valve stem 19, aforesaid, in operative relation to the valve seat 15, and in its normal position adapted to close the orifice or passage 14.
27 designates one or more lateral passages formed in the wall of the tubular valve stem 19, an connecting the bore 28 of said valve stem with the piston cha,v point immediately 26, above described.
29 designates an adjustablevalve rod or member, preferably of the needle type shown, movable in the upper portion of the bore 28 of the'tubularyalve stem 19, with to the lateral passages 27, aforesaid` and adapted to regulate the size of said passages as usual 1n the present typeof valves. 'lo such lve rod 29 is formed with a screwthreaded head or enlargement 30 at its upper end and which is in adjustable engagement with a correspondingly threaded upper portion of the bore ofthe tubular Valve stem 19, as shown in Fig. l.

he operation of the present mechanism is as follows: With a depression of the tubular valve stem 19 by the rock arm 24 and rock shaft 25, the auxiliary valve 26 is moved away from its seat 15, and the sage 14 is opened for communicationbetween the piston-chamber 10 and the containing enlarged screw chamber 12, to permit an outflow of Huid from said piston chamber, due to the pressure exerted by the ber 2 the effect being to cause a rapid and full opening movement of the main valve 2l carunder pressure from the inlet chamber 2, passes in a slow manner through the tubular bore 2S and through the restricted passage 27 into the piston chamber 10, and above the piston 20, to gradually force said piston in a downward direction, and with it the main valve 21 to a closed position, ready for a succeeding operation similar to that above described.

The combination in a fiush valve, of an open top easing formed with an upper containing ehamber and intermediate piston chamber and lower inlet and outlet cl|am' bers, a transverse partition of an approximately V-shape separating said inlet and outlet chambers and having a communieating passage and valve seat, a cap closing the open upper end of the casing and having a central guide bore, a. piston in the aforesaid piston chamber formed with a central guide bore, a valve head carried by said piston and controlling the passage between the inlet and outlet chambers aforesaid, a tubular valve stem having vertical movement in the guide bores cap aforesaid, and provided with a lateral passage in its wall and opening into the aforesaid piston chamber, means within the valve stem for regulating the size of said lateral passage` an auxiliary valve head carried on said valve stem at a point above the lateral passage aforesaid, a removable partition separating the aforesaid containing and piston chambers and having a central valve seat and passage controlled by said means providing communication between the containing and outlet chambers aforesaid, resilient means for moving lthe aforesaid valve stem upwardly, and means for imparting positive downward movement to said valve stem, substantially as set forth.

The combination in a Hush valve, of an open top casing formed with anupper containing chamber and intermediate piston chamber and lower inlet and outlet chambers, a transverse partition of an approximately tl-shape separating said inlet and outlet chambers and having a communicating passage and valve seat, a cap closing the open upper end of the casing and having a central guide bore, a piston yin the aforesaid pi'ston chamber formed with -a central guide bore, a valve head carried by said piston and controlling the passage between the inlet and outlet chambers aforesaid, a tubular valve stem having vertical movement in the guide bores of the piston and cap aforesaid, and providedwith a lateral passage in its wall and opening into the aforesaid piston chamber, means within the valve stem for regulating the size of said lateral lpassage, an auxiliary valve head carried on said valve stem at a point above the lateral passage aforesaid, a removable partition separating the aforesaid containing and piston chambers and having a central valve seat vment in the guide and passage controlled by v said auxiliary valve head, means providing communication between the containing and outlet chambers aforesaid, the same comprising a vertical passage formed in the wall of the casing, resilient means for moving the aforesaid valve stem upwardiy, and means for imparting positive downward movement to said valve stem, substantially as set forth.

The combfnation in a iiush valve, of an open top casing formed with an upper containing chamber and intermediate piston chamber and lower inlet and outlet chambers, atransverse partition of an approximately ll-shape separating said inlet and outlet chambers and having a communieating passage and valve seat, a cap closing the open upper end of the casing and having a central guide bore, a piston in the aforesaid piston chamber formed with a central guide bore, a valve head carried by said piston and controlling the passage between the inlet and outlet chambers aforesaid, a tubular valve stem having vertical movebores of the piston and cap aforesaid, and provided with a lateral passage in its wall and opening into the aforesaid piston chamber, means within the valve stem for regulating the size of said lateral passage, the same comprising a valve rod having a tapered lower end and an enlarged screwhreaded upper end engaging a similarly formed portion of the bore of the tubular valve stem aforesaid, an auxiliary valve head carried on said valve stem at a point above the-lateral passage aforesaid, a removable partition separating the aforesaid containing and piston chambers and having a central valve seat and passage controlled by said auxiliary valve head, means providing communication between the containing and outlet chambers aforesaid, resilient means for moving the aforesaid valve stem upwardly, and means for imparting positive downward movement to said valve stem, substantially as set forth.
