IBEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1916.
Application filed January 6, 1911, Serial No. 601,198. Renewed March 27, 1916. Serial No. 87,086.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS G. GALE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at WVaterville, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented an Improvement in Bedsteads, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts,
This invention relates to bedsteads and particularly to the manner of securing the ornament to the top of the pillar. I'have illustrated herein two embodiments of the invention which will first be described and the novel features of the invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, the figure shows in vertical section the top of one pillar of a bedstead having the end of a bow top rail secured thereto in accordance with my invention.
3 designates the pillar of a bedstead, and it is shown as having secured thereto a knob 4 of any suitable metal, such, for instance, as cast iron. This knob may be cast onto the end of the pillar in a well known way, or may be secured in place in any other suitable manner.
The ornament shown in the figure is in the nature of a bow top rail 5 and a cup or vase 6 into which the vertical end of the bow top rail 5 is inserted. This bow top rail can conveniently be made of brass and it eX- tends from one pillar to the other and forms the top rail of the bedstead end, and each end 7 is curved downwardly into vertical alinement with a pillar 3. In order to fasten this ornament to the pillar I have provided each clownturned end 7 of the bow top rail with a gromet or nut 8 which is inserted on the interior thereof and is secured in place in any suitable way, as by brazing. The cup or vase 6 may have any ornamental shape desired, and is provided with a bottom 9 which rests on the top of the knob 4. The parts are held together by a clamping screw or bolt 10 which is in sorted through the pillar 3 from the bottom end thereof and extends upwardly through a hole 11 formed in the knob 4 and is adapted to have screw-threaded engagement with the nut or gromet 8. This clamping bolt Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
11 may be inserted in position by means of a suitably-shaped socket wrench or other suitable implement, and it is provided with a head) 12 which engages the under side of the mo By means of this construction the clamping bolt can be readily inserted or removed as desired and when in place it is entirely concealed and invisible.
In my invention the clamping means is entirely concealed within the pillar and the clamping is done'by means of a wrench or other implement inserted through the bottom of the pillar. Moreover, the ornamental part to be attached to the pillar is pro vided with a nut with which the clamping bolt has screw-threaded engagement, and said bolt is provided with a head that engages an abutment member which is rigid with the pillar.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i 1. In a bedstead, the combination with a tubular pillar, of an exposed knob at the upper end thereof, a horizontal end rail having the end bent into vertical alinement with the pillar, a nut on the interior of the end rail at the end thereof, a bolt inserted through the knob from the lower side thereof and having screw-threaded engagement with said nut, and an ornamental member inclosing the lower end of the bow top rail and held from vertical movement thereby.
2. In a bedstead, the combination with a. tubular pillar, of an exposed knob at the upper end thereof, a horizontal end rail having the end bent into vertical alinement with the pillar, a nut on the interior of the end rail at the end thereof, a bolt inserted through the knob from the lower side thereof and having screw-threaded engagement with said nut, and an ornamental member inclosing the lower end of the bow top rail and having a portion clamped between said rail and the top of the knob.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS G. GALE.
