To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAooB N. ScHWANDEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relatesto improvements in shoes and like articles of foot wear, the object of the invention being to provide a shoe which is especially designed and constructed to present a soft sole, rendering the shoe of maximum comfort and ease to the wearer.

A further object of the invention is to provide} a shoe which avoids lasting and channeling, as well as the use of an ordinary comparatively stiff inner sole, and which also obviates the use of seams upon the interior of the shoe which are liable to hurt or cause discomfort to the foot of the wearer.

' of shoe constructed in accordance with my and yet strong and. durable leather being preferred. The upper 2 may be made of any suitable kind of soft leather, while the lining 3 is also made of soft leather, and

which .is also comparatively thin. In prac tice, the upper and lining may be made'of the same kind of leather, if desired, and the lining forms with the upper a shoe body of sock-like softness which makes the shoe easy and comfortable to the foot of the wearer.

In order to avoid the production of any internal seams, ridges or projections of any kind liable to hurt or injure the foot of the wearer, I provide novel means for uniting the meeting edges of the upper and lining to eachother and to the sole 1. To this end, the meeting edges 4 and 5, respectively,

of the upper and lining are turned outward and'united by thread stitching 6, and the seam thus formed is projected downwardly and arranged to'lie within a groove or depression 7 in the-upper face of the sole 1, saidgrooveor depression being formed by creasing the sole so as to make an indentation of the required form and depth in the upper surface thereof. The leather of which the sole is made being comparativelysoft will allow this to be done, and at the same time avoid the necessity of channeling or otherwise positively cutting into the leather. The connecting seam between the upper and lining being thus produced, thus forming a sock-like shoe body, and the seanrfitted within the groove of the sole, a portion of the upper is then turned outwardly and folded upon itself to form a doubled flange 8 extending marginally around it, and this.

flange is then sewed to the edge of the sole 1 by means of a continuous line of stitching 9, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.

- By the construction described a shoe is produced which is not only composed of soft and flexible component parts, but in which the connecting seam between the lining and upper is projected downwardly and confined within the groove in the sole, so as to allow the surfaceof the lining to lie flush entirely across the top of the sole, while the connecting seam between the sole and upper lies upon the outside of the shoe body, leaving no seams or other projections within the shoe to chafe or otherwise hurt or injure the foot. A type of shoe is thus made which may be constructed to fit the foot easily and snugly and which will yet be almost as soft and comfortable as an ordinary sock.

The invention may: be employed in the production of all kinds of shoes, but particularly in the production of slippers, house-shoes, sporting shoes, etc., which should be of a comfortable character, the invention providing such a type of shoe which may not only be made as inexpensively or expensively as desired, butwhich will afford maximum the wearer.

I claim 1. A shoe comprising an outer sole, an inner sole, and an upper having an outwardly extending marginal portion'folded to preease and comfort. to 4 105 its lower ply secured to the inside sole independently of the remainder of the upper by a seam located inside of said outside seam.

2. A shoe comprising an outer sole, an in- 5 ner sole or lining, and an upper, said upper having a folded marginal portion presenting upper and lower plies, a line of stitching passing through both of said plies and the outer sole and securing the same together, the lower ply of said folded marginal portion being provided with a free edge, and a line of stitching uniting said free edge of said lower plv to the marginal edge of the lining or inner sole free and'independent of 15.the body of the upper.

3. A shoe including an outer sole, an inner sole or. lining having a downturned mar-' ginal edge, an' upper having an outturned margin folded upon itself to provide upper and lower plies, the lower ply having an edge portion disposed in proximate and parallel relation to the downturned marginal edge of the inner sole or lining, a line of stitching passing through the outer sole and gaaboth plies of the folded marginal portion ofthe upper and securing the same. to-

gether, and a line of stitching passing throughthe proximate edge portions of the inner sole or lining and the lower ply of said folded marginal portion of the upper and connecting the same independently of the body of the upper.

A shoe including an outer sole, an inner sole or lining, and an upper, said upper having a marginal portion folded to present upper and lower plies, both of said plies being secured to the sole by an outside seam and the lower of said plies being secured tothe inner sole by an inside seam, independently of connection with the body of the upper.

5. A shoe including an outer sole, an inner sole or lining, an upper having an outwardly extending marginal portion folded to present upperand lower plies, a line of stitching connecting both of said plies with the outer sole, and a line of stitching con-o necting the free edge of the lower ply, independently of the body of the upper, with the marginal edge of the lining or inner sole.

A shoe comprising an outer sole, an inner sole or lining, and an upper having a marginal portion folded upon itself to present an upper-outwardly extending ply and a lower inwardly extending ply, the said plies being united to the outer sole beyond the line of the body of the upper and the inner p 51 being united solely to the inner sole or lining below the horizontal plane of the upper surface of said ply and lining. on

A shoe comprising a solo, a soft lining for the upper surface of the sole, and an upper, said lining and upper being united by a seam, and the upper being connected with thesole by a seam, the sole being formed 66 with a groove receiving the first-named seambelowthe plane of the surface of the lining.

A shoe comprising a sole having a marginal groove in its upper surface, a soft lining for the upper surface of the sole, and 7.0 an upper having an outturned portion united to the sole and having an edge portion connected with theedge portion of the lining by a seam, said'fseam occupying said groove in the sole below'the surface of the lining. i

9. A shoe comprising a sole having a mar-v ginal groove in its upper surface, a lining extending across the upper surface of the sole,-and an upper marginally secured to the lining by a seam projecting into said groove and having an outwardly projecting portion united on the outside of the shoe to the marginal portion of the sole.

10. A shoe comprising a sole having a marginal groove in its upper surface, a lining for the upper surface of said sole, and an upper, said upper being secured by a seam to the lining and by a second seam outside of the first-named seam to the sole, the first-named seam being inclosed within said groove.

11. A shoe comprising a sole having a marginal depression in its upper surface, a soft lining for the upper surface of the sole, and an upper, said lining'and upper having out-turned marginal portions united to form a seam occupying said depression below the plane of the surface of the lining, and said upper having aodoubled portion folded out wardly in the form of a flange united by a seam to the marginal portion of the sole outwardly beyond the line of said depress on. l
