ADJUSTABLE SUPPORT.
To all whom it may concern: 4 Be it known that I, GEORGE ALDWORTH,
subject of the King of Great Britain and, Ireland, residing at London, W., England, v
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for the support and suspension of hair waving devices employed for the pur pose of waving hair on the human head.
In apparatus of this kind it is usual to suspend the hair wavingdevices from the ceiling but this implies in practice that the patient must go, to the establishment of the hair waver in order to have her hair treated.
My invention relates to an apparatus which can be easily erected, easily taken to pieces and easily transported from one place to another, so that the hair waving operation may be performed at the home of the patient or at any other convenient place.
My apparatus is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure I shows the complete apparatus when mounted and in use. Fig. II illustrates in part elevation and part section what I term a gallows. Fig. III is a plan view of the clipping frames. Fig. IV is a half side elevation, half vertical section of the clipping frames shown on a larger scale than is the case in Fig. III. Fig. V is a part plan, part horizontal section ofthe clipping frames also on a larger scale. Fig. VI is a section on the line 00-5 of Fig. II. Fig. VII is a section on the line co3 of Fig. IV.
Referringnow to these figures, 1 is a base plate by means of which my apparatus can be attached by a clamp, suchas 2, to a stool or table 3. Upon this base plate is a socket 4 into which fits the lower end of the main length 5 of my standard. This main length is tubular for the reception in a telescopic manner of the upper length 6 of the stand ard. The upper length can be slid more or Specification of Letters Patent.

9 is the top-rod of the gallows fitted at one end with the elbow junction 10 whose vertical part may be slipped over the upper end of the length 6 and bound in position, by the thumbscrew 11.
12 is a stay hung loosely from the sliding clip 13 so that it may swing therefrom. In R theoperation of mounting the gallows, this v clip 13 is slid along the top-rod loosely, while at the same time the stay 12 is brought to the position shown in Fig. I and caused to engage the upper length 6 as shown in Fig. II where it will be seen that a pin 14 penetrates an orifice in the upper length 6. The thumbscrew 15 is now tightened so that the parts 6, 9 and 12 arerigidly affixed and form a strong triangular bracing. From the free extremity or other convenient part of the top-rod 9 depends the hanger-rod 16, the connection between the hanger-rod and the top-rod being elfected by the sleeve 17 formed integral with the hanger-rod and slid over the free-end of the'top-rod. A thumbscrew similar to 15 may be employed on the sleeve 17. Near the lower end of the hanger-rod 16 are two orifices 18, 19
through which pass the horizontal rods 20',
21 of the clipping frames. At the outer extremities of the horizontal rods 20, 21 are attached the curved rods 22, 23 by being passed through and soldered in the sleeves 24, 25. Thumbscrews as 24. may be employed for further binding the curved rods (when they are round) to the horizontal rods. Thumbscrews on the hanger-rod 16 may be employed as shown in Figs. III and. V to bind the horizontal rods 20, 21 in position. 'It will be seen that these horizontal rods together with the curved rods attached to them are in different planes, so that they can he slid to right or left as desired.

In this suspension block it will be seen that each pulley issupported in a stirrup as 37 riveted to a base plate 38 which base plate is riveted to the short sleeve 39 sliding over the top-rod 9 to which it may be bound by thumbscrews 40' in a well known manner. In Figs. I and VI the top-rod is shown as having orifices 41 in its upper part to receive thumbscrews. As a matter of fact however in Fig. VI 40 is a headed spring-bolt of a well known kind instead of being a thumbscrew, but of course a thumbscrew can be used as an equivalent. In a similar way wherever I refer to a thumbscrew in this specification a springbolt such as is shown in Fig. VI may be employed.
42 is a thumbscrew (there may be two of them) which serves to bind the horizontal rods 20, 21 in position on the hanger-rod 16. This is shown separately in Fig. VII. For convenience of drawing these thumbscrews are omitted in Fig. I.
43, 44 are the leads connecting the electric heaters 26, 27 with the source of electrical energy. They are shown simply diagrammatically for the current may be led to the heaters in any desired way. For example the leads 43, 44 might constitute the suspending cords 28, 29, or they could be brought to the heaters in any other convenient way.
I desire it to be understood that although the main length 5 is preferably tubular for the purpose specified the other length and the rods may be either tubular or solid. For lightness I prefer to make all these parts tubular. The base plate 1 and the socket 4 may be integral with the main length. To prevent injury to the table or stool to which the base plate is attached a disk of leather or the like 45 may be employed. Instead of fixing the sliding clip 13 to the top-rod and causing the pin 14 to engage the upper length I may reverse these orifice in the top-rod 9.

In Fig. II, I have shown the devices which I prefer to employ but it is quite unnecessary for me to specify what parts are brazed or otherwise joined together at the junctions as all such junctions are well known to mechanics. Equivalents for many of these parts are also well known to mechanics.
I have hereinbefore referred to a clamp for fastening the base plate to a stool or table but it'will of. course be understood that if the base plate be sufficiently extended, particularly in the direction of the free end of the top-rod, such clamp will be unnecessary and the base plate in that case might rest on the floor.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In apparatus of the class described, the combination of a standard and a horizontally extending top-rod mounted on said standard, a hanger-rod depending from.
