DELBERT E. HOFFMAN, or sHAw ISLAND, WASHINGTON.
CHANGE-SPEED GEARING FOR POWER PURSE-SEINE REELS.
Application filed April 3, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELBERT E. Horr- MAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Shaw Island, in the county of San Juan and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Change-Speed Gearing for Power Purse-Seine Reels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a mechanism for facilitating the changing of speed of power purse seine reels, and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient means whereby the changing of the speed of the reel may be very quickly and efficiently obtained.
Another object of this inventionis the production of a simple and efiicient construction for facilitating the quick and efficient changing of the speed of the reel.
lVith these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the reel. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof, the support being shown in section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan view of the speed changing device. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of the speed changing mechanism. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the brake mechanism.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the supporting platform which carries a king-swivel 2. This kingswivel 2 carries an enlarged bevel gear 3, which bevel gear meshes with a bevel gear 1 carried by the drive shaft 5 for the purpose of swinging the reel-carrying frame 6 to the desired position. A track 7 is carried bv the supporting platform 1,.for facilitating the turning of the reel-carrying frame 6.
The king-swivel 2 carries a bevel gear 10 at the top thereof which meshes with the bevel gear 11 carried by the transmission shaft 12. This transmission shaft 12 is supported upon the frame 6 in any suitable or convenient manner and carries a plurality of speed gears 13 near one end thereof. The frame 6 carries a pair of transversely extending parallel tracks 14, which tracks are provided with longitudinally extending slots 15, and upon these tracks 14 is adapted to slide the shifting frame 16, the shifting Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 17, 1916.
Serial No. 18,981.
frame 16 being provided with depending bolts 17 for traveling in the slots 15. This shifting frame 16 is provided with a rear- 21 is provided with a latch 22 for engaging the quadrant 23 and holding the lever 21 in a set position. The quadrant 23 is provided with a plurality of notches 2 1 so spaced as to hold theshifting frame 16 in a predetermined shifted position according to each notch.
A pair of links 25 are pivotally secured upon the shifting frame 16, and these links are connected to a gear shifting arm 26, which gear shifting arm 26 is provided with a pair of laterally projecting spaced fingers 27, which fingers fit upon opposite sides of the changing-gear 28 for moving the same laterally to be thrown into engagement with the respective speed gears 13. The gear 28 is keyed to the countershaft 29 so as to have free lateral sliding movement thereon. The arm 26 is connected to a link 30, which link is in turn connected to a pivoted bell crank lever- 31 so as .to allow the arm 26 to be shifted laterally for moving the gear 28 to a position tobe thrown into engagement with the desired speed gear 13.
It should be understood that when it is desired to shift or change the speed of the reel, that the gear 28 is moved out of engagement with one of the speed gears 13 and is then moved laterally to the desired position for engagement with the next or desired speed gear, whereupon the lever 21 is swung to the desired position for causing the latch 22 to engage the desired notch, whereby the shifting frame 16 will be moved to such a position as to cause the gear 28 to be thrown into direct contact with one of the speed gears 13, thereby imparting rotary movement to the gear 28 and shaft 29. A sprocket wheel 32 is carried by the shaft 29, and this sprocket wheel receives a sprocket chain 33, which chain 33 passes over a sprocket wheel 34 carried by the shaft 35, which shaft supports the reel hereinafter described. The shaft 35 is supported upon the end standards 36, and the shaft 35 also engages a plurality of end plates 37 which end plates are secured to the end disks 38 of the reel. The disks 38 and plates 37 are connected by means of the longitudinally extending slats 39, which slats are braced intermediate their ends by means of the wheels 4-0. A brake lever 46 is pivotally mounted upon the reel-carrying frame 6 and carries a pivotally mounted brake shoe 4'? for facilitating the throwing of the brake shoe e7 into engagement with one of the end disks 38.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is:-
1. A speed changing gearing especially adapted for use in connection with reels comprising a driving shaft, a plurality of variable speed gears carried by said driving shaft, a plurality of track bars, a gearcarrying frame slidably mounted upon said track bars and capable of lateral movement relative to said driving shaft, said gearcarrying frame being substantially U- shaped, a journal box carried by each end of said frame, an auxiliary shaft carried by said sliding frame, a gear carried-by said auxiliary shaft, means for shifting said gear laterally for facilitating the. engagement of said gear with said variable speed gears, a link engaging said sliding frame, and lever means engaging said link for facilitating the shifting of said sliding frame upon said track bars.
2. A speed changing gearing especially adapted for use in connection with reels comprising a driving shaft, a plurality of variable speed gears carried by said driving shaft, a plurality of track bars, a gear-carrying frame slidably mounted upon said track bars and capable of lateral movement relative to said driving shaft, said gear-carrying frame. being substantially U-shaped, a journal box carried by each end of said frame, an auxiliary shaft carried by said sliding frame, a gear carried by said auxiliary shaft, means for shifting said gear laterally for facilitating the engagement of said gear with said variable speed gears, a link engaging said sliding frame, and manually operated lever means engaging said link for facilitating the shifting of said sliding frame upon said track bars.

main shaft, a plurality of variable speed gears carried by said main shaft, a plurality of track bars carried by said frame, a gearcarrying frame slidably mounted upon said track bars, said gear-carrying frame comprising a pair of parallel arms, a journal box carried by each arm, an auxiliary shaft carried by said journal boxes, a gear carried by said auxiliary shaft, links pivotally connected to said journal boxes, a shifting bar connected to said links and provided with a pair of spaced laterally extending fingers fitting upon opposite sides of said last mentioned gear, and lever means engaging said shifting bar for moving the same laterally and causing said last gear to be thrown into proper alinement with one of the selected variable speed gears.
4c. A gear shifting device for use in connection with reels comprising a support, a main shaft, a plurality of variable speed gears carried by said main shaft, a plurality of track bars carried by said frame, a gearcarrying frame slidably mounted upon said track bars, said gear-carrying frame comprising a pair of parallel arms, a journal box carried by each arm, an auxiliary shaft carried by said journal boxes, a gear carried by said auxiliary shaft, links pivotally connected to said journal boxes, a shifting bar connected to said links and provided with a pair of spaced laterally extending fingers fitting upon opposite sides of said last mentioned gear, lever means engaging said shifting bar for moving the same laterally and causing said last gear to be thrown into proper alinement with one of the selected variable speed gears, said tracks provided with longitudinally extending slots, and bolts carried by said gear-carrying frame and Working in said slots for controlling the distance of travel of said gear-carrying frame upon said track bars.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
