DAVID ngruannn, or GAn sBu-rte, ILtIivoIs.
2 To all whom/it cm :1
, Be itknoWn that-1 1) subject-of the King of swedenjiand esin dent of 'Galesburg, in theedunty bt mx,
andState of lllinois -have invented anew anduseful Molde'rs Shift- Boigofiwh' 1 the;
following is a specification;
- "In casting or, molding" metals, nearly all foundries employ snap flasksfor .inaking the relatively small articles. WVhenLthe mold has been completed it is "carried, while within j thesnap-flask', to its'position on' the floor,-
whereupon t s pfifllSk removed and" shiftfl'a'skor box set down snuglyuponth'e mold. It is eXtremelyessentia-l that the lat l ter fit the mold accurately in order, pri; marily, to preserve vitsfshape exactly asit was when the: snap-flask was removed,
whereby the shape of the" cavity left un disturbed. Again, in? Order that the gases may not escape the shift-box must fit with precision. Quite frequently"fthe' 'molten metal will, as thexca'sting isbe'ing poured, escape andrun out; onto aj'side or an endof the shift box, and if. theseiare of wood'the' 'boX or a portion thereof will be sobu'rned that thebox will be rendered useless lithe boxis made of sheets, or .even-fof a single piece of metal, non-separable, the molten metalwill either burn a holejth erein or adhere thereto, thus utterly '1 destroying the. utility thereof. These shift-boxes'have heretically, whereby to fit molds differing in size,
Another ob ect 1s to provide a shift-box made of a plurality of independentsections any of which, should a hole be burned through it, or shoulda' lumpof metal, in
cooling, adhere to it, be quickly and easily removed and another one substituted therefor. Y r Y Other objects Wlll" presently appear.
Some of these will be obvious and others particularly pointed out. I p v .The invention consists, substantially, in the improvements hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, which h .ends.;;,:
now to a ,deta'iled'description of- (as each 50 which h t utsed e-a flangeQ13 provided'with apertures adapted each with theadjacent aperture 11;

15 designate slots pted to, regist f 16 i (Fig. 5) indicates an extension which may be used when the shift-box is not sufli-= unusual height. These extensions may be of any suitable material and secured to each side andeacli end in any suitable manner, the one shown having a flange 17'pr0'vided with apertures registering .withthose in the flange .3 of'the side 2 and secured thereto by b'0lts1 8 and nuts 19.
20, -20 designate bolts each of which passes through a slotv 15 and throughthe aperture 11 registering'therewith, and" 21, 21 indicate nuts engaged one with each of: said bolts.
I 2, 22 designat through the adjacent registering slot 5, and

of said bolts.
a slot 5 and the registering aperture lO,' and ciently deep to receive and bind a mold. of j i I .7 1 05 bolts each of whichpasses through an aper'turexin a flange [13 and 25, 25 designate nuts each of which engages one of said bolts. The sizes of the snap-flasks being known, the shift-box may, by means of the slots,
apertures, bolts, nuts and supplementalends, be ad usted to correspond in dlmenslons and-- or divergent from the other, said 'means 1nshape practically exactly :therewitlndn order that it may snugly fit the moldwhen the latter has been laid on thefi'oor' and the 's'nap flask removed. The ends ,6, 6., are o'fisuch sizes as tonormally. fit mol,ds of standard dimensions, but when the molds. arl'eofuhv usual or uncommon size, wider than'the. er.- dinary ones, the supplemental. ends o'r'filL ers' completely fill the gap whichotherwise would appear. P 4 i It will be seen that my improved box may be made to fit molds differing in either'their lateral or their longitudinal dimensions or in both, and may bebei eled or flared, whereby it may be quickly and accurately ed to fit a ast number of variously shaped and dimensioned molds.
Having. thus Jdescribejd my invention I claim as new the following,'to.-wit:-'
1'. In a box, a pairof sides, a. pair of ends each of which has a flange at one o f itssedge s, means for adjustably' connecting the flange of .each of said ends with one o-fsaid' sides, and fillers, both adjustably connected with the other of said sidesandeach with oneof said ends. F '1 2'. In a box, a pair of sides eachof which has at its upper edge a flange and each flange provided with apertures, a pair of ends each of which h-as at itsupper 'edge a flange and each 'flang'e'fprovided with apertures, means ,for adjustablyconnectingsaid adjustably connecting said ends with the other-ofnsai d sides.
3. A shift-box comprising sides and ends, a plurality of means whereby either of said sides may be adjusted either parallel with eluding L -.shaped supplemental ends adapted to"co6pe'r'ate' with said ends and sides whereby to alter either the length or the breadth. of the box, said plurality of means adapted also fori adjustingthe ends and supplemental endswliereby to change their inclinations.
4. Inka:box, a pair of sides plane throughout their lengths, a, pai'rof, ends proper each of which has arectangularly turned flange, both of said flanges resting against the same One-Ofsaid, sides, bolts adjustably connecting said= flanges with said sides" means for lockingthe bolts, and a pair fof L s'haped supplemental ends onelimbof each ofwhich is adjlil'stably connected with the-adjacent end proper and the other limbof'which is adj ustably connected with 'the'fother side.
5; A l- 'shiift-box comprisingf sides, ends proper and supplemental ends, means for adjusting said sides toward or from each other andfl for inclining them'with relation to fe'aclfother, said means adapted also for adjusting and locking jsai'dfends' prope and supplemental ends to: correspond to any or all ofthe 'adjustments' of the sidesl 'In' testimony'thatjl claim" the foregoing as my sole in e'ntion I hereto 'su'bscribemy name at Galesburg, in thecountyiand State aforesaid, this llthfday of'Eebr ai-y; 1916.
