Be it known that I OSCAR L. SGALBOM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Glenview, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Latches for Machine-Controlling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My present lnvention relates in general t safety latches and-more particularly to automatically acting latches for controlling the operating of machines, and has'special' reference to the provision of a device of the character referred to adapted for use on power driven machines repeatedly performing the same operation. v

it will be noted that for purposes of convenience in illustration as above'suggested I have shown. a well known type of power punch presswherein amain frame having ody portions 11-11,.legs 12-12 supports a gu1de 13 in which is mounted a ram 14 carrying a punch (not shown) for forming 25 material resting in a die (not shown) carried ina base 15, the ram 14 being actuated v the .treadle rod 22. I In machines embodying my present improvements, however, the treadle is ordinarily disconnected from the rod 22 or such rod 22 disconnected from the rod 18, and the primary operating lever 23 is applied in lieu thereof. f
The lever 23 as will appear on examination of Figs. 2 and 3 is operable by the right hand of the machine operator and preferably includes a body portion 24 provided with a hook 25 adapted for engagement with the pivot pin 19 or an extensionthereof, and an oppositely disposed hook 26 adapted for engagement with the main pivot stud 21, the opposite end of the lever 23 beingprovided with a push rod 27. The hook 25 is preferably fixed in position on the part 24 in such a manner as to be easily removable therefrom, and the hook 26 is preferably pivotally mounted thereon as indicated at 28 and" adapted to be secured in position by means of a screw 29 which may be removed to the end that the hook 26 may be moved to the position indicatedin. dotted lines' in Fig. 2 for the purpose of're'moval of the lever 23 from the machine. 1

On inspection of Fig. 5 it will be noted that the frame members 11, 11, are provided 'with rearwardly extending ears 32,32, in which is mounted a rocking counter shaft '33. At one end of the counter shaft 33 is disposed a thimble 34 fixed against rotation thereon, which thimble carries at right Iangles thereto a sleeve 35 in which the outer end 36 of the lever 31 is disposed and held in position by means of a pin 37. The lever 31 is normally .supported in the position shown in Fig. 1 by means of a tension spring 38 engaging a sliding block 39 which may be fixed in position on said lever 31 by means of a set screw 40, the.oppo site end of such 23 and hence reciprocation of the spring 38 being supported at some convenient point on one of the frame members 11 as indicated at 41. The end of the shaft 33 opposite to the thimble 34 carries fast against rotation thereon a depending lock arm 42 having a laterally extending catch pin 43 provided with. a roller 43* adapted to engage a hook 44 on a bell crank lever 45 which is pivoted at 46 to a substantially upright lock arm 47 which in turn is pivoted about said main pivot point 21 hereinabove referred to, the said lock arm 47 being provided with a removable bifurcated catch 48 held in position by a screw'49 (see Fig. 6) which normally engages (as shown in Fig. 1) the un-.
der side of a cone 50 formed at the upper extremity of a vertically movable rod 51. The rod 51 is pivotally connected to the clutch operating rod 18 at the point 19 above referred to, and is carried in an aperture in a boss 52 formed in the frame 11, a helically coiled spring 53 encircling said rod 51- and normally restrained between said boss 52 'and a pair of lock nuts 54 being supplied for the purpose of normally maintaining the rod 51 in the position indicated in Fig. 11 A spring 55 engages the lock arm 47 and said spring 551s employed for normally holding 48 in contact with the under side of the cone 50 as shown in Fig. 1. 7
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 6 and 7 it will be observed that for the purpose of lifting the lever 45 to the position shown in Fig. '1, when it is removed therefrom, I employ a coiled compression spring 56 mounted in an extension 56 of the catch rod 47. To move the arm 45 downwardly.

and by virtue of the pivotal connection indicated at 46- this will move the upright arm' 47 in the same direction, releasing the bifurcated catch 48 from the cone 50, which will permit the push rod 27 to be depressed by the right hand of theoperator, thereby lowering the clutch operating rod 18 (see Fig. 1) and allowing the crank. shaft 16 to revolve. When interrupting mechanism, such as is shownin the devlcefof Figs. 6 to 10 is employed, the lowering of the rod 18 causes the arm 74 to strike the .trip 'rest (or the set. screw 76, which-is provided. forthe purpose of varying thecritical movement of the operation of the trip,.) thereby causing the hook 64 to disengage itself from the pin 65, releasing the rod 18" which is" immedi-'-, ately lifted by means of the spring-68 and the clutch thereby thrown out, and the movement ofthe crank shaft 16 stopped.
The complete cycle of operation of the machine is now completed, and the levers 23 z and 31 must both'be returned to their normal positions shown in Fig. 1 before the opera-' tion can berepeated for the reason that raising of the lever 31 alone will not cause or permit repetition of the cycle of operation since such-lever has no actuating engagement with the rod 18, or either part 18 or 18 thereof, and raising of the rod 23 alone followed byredepression thereof will not cause 'of 'permit it since such lifting is accomplished by a pushing away of the'catch 48 by the cone 50 and immediate engagementywi'th the lower surface of such cone 50 by the catch 48, due to the action of the spring 55, which prevents any substantial movement of the lever 23 until the connection is reestablished between the 'arm 42 and hook 44 and rearwardmovement of said arm 42 again withdraws the catch 48 from the cone 50. Immediately upon the'depression of the rod'51 subsequent upon depression of the rod 23, the latch 48 rides onto the cone 50 by virtue of the action of the spring 55 drawing the upright member 47 to the left or toward-the front of the machine and simultaneously carrying the lever 45 in the same direction and causing the hook 44to abut underthe roller 43, thus restoring the Obviously as soon as. the lever 23 is lifted, the spring 72 tends to retract the hook 64 from the position shown in Fig. 6' to that .parts 44 and 48 in position to bereengaged by the parts 43 and 50 uponthe lifting of the levers31 and 23 respectively.

In an -apparatusof the character de scribed, in combinationwith means for controlling a power supply, aprimary manually operated lever for actuating the controlling means, a secondary manually operated lever for controlling the operation of said first mentioned lever, and an interrupting device for discontinuing the actuating relation between said, primary lever and said power controlling means, upon completion of the'initial movement of said primary lever, said primary lever being inoperative except when 'saidsecondary'lever'is in operative position and said secondary lever being arranged to-require alternative restorationto inoperative position andmovement therefrom before said first mentioned lever may be again operated.

In an apparatus ofthe character described, in combination with means for controllinga power supply, a primary manually opieratedlever for actuating the controlling means; a secondary manually operated lever for controlling the operation of said first mentioned "lever, and an interrupting device for discontinuing the actuating relation between said primary lever upon completion of the initial movement of said primary lever,-said secondary lever being inoperatively connected to said power controlling means, and said primary lever being inoperative except when said secondary lever isin operative position.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combinationwith a main frame and ,ineans for controlling a power vsupply supported thereby, a primary manually operated lever for actuating the controlling means engaging said means and pivotally mounted on the frame, a resiliently supportedlock engaging said lever and means, an upright arm pivoted about said pivot point and provided with a catch resiliently engaging said look, a rock'sha'ft carried by the frame, a resiliently supported secondary lever and a rocker arm mountedon said shaft, and a resiliently held lever provided with a hook'engaging said rocker arm and pivotedto said upright arm. 1 10. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination with means for controlling a power supply, a primary manually operated lever for actuating the controlling means permanently connected thereto, and a secondary manually operated lever -for controllingtheoperation of said firstmentioned lever, both said levers being ar ranged to require consecutive movement into operative position before said operating means may be actuated. 7 r 11. In an apparatus of'the character described, in combination with means for controlling 'a power supply, a primary manually operated lever for actuating the controllingmeans, and a secondary manually I operated lever for controlling the operation of said first-mentioned lever, said primary lever requiring the movement of said secondary lever before it can be moved.

In an'apparatus of the character described, in combination with means for controlling a power supply, a primary manually operated lever for actuating the controlling means, A controlling means permanently connected thereto, and a secondary manually operated lever for controlling the operation of said first-mentioned lever, said primary lever requiring the movement of said secondary lever before it can be moved.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination with meansfor controlling a power supply, a primary manually operated lever for actuating the controlling means, a secondary manually operated lever arranged to require alternate movement relatively to the primary lever .for controlling the operation of said firstmentioned lever, and a member adapted to prevent the operation of said lever except when moved out of engagement therewith by' said secondary lever.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combinationwith means for controlling a power supply, a primary manually operated lever for actuating the controlling means, and a secondary manually operated lever arranged to require alternate movement relatively to the primary lever for controlling the operation of said firstmentioned lever, a member adapted to prevent the operation of said lever except when moved out of engagement therewith by said secondary lever, and means operated by said primary lever for restoring said member to engaging position after the operation of said primary lever. r
15. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination with means for controlling a power supply, a primary manually-operated lever for actuating the con-.
