Beit known that I, FRANK H. BOGDA, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Burnett, in the county of Dodge and State of Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stanchions, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stanchions and more particularly to stanchions in which the parts are adjustable to vary the width of the neck opening.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stanchion which is locked in closed position at two points to prevent the accidental opening of the parts by the animal.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stanchion constructed in part of tubing and having guard means for preventing the animal from putting his head between the stanchion and the sides of the stall.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stanchion with improved means for pivot-ally connecting it to a support or stanchion frame.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stanchion having parts so constructed that by the removal of a portion of one of the parts the two locking means are operatively disconnected and have to be independently unlocked.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stanchion in which one of the locking members forV locking thestanchion members together also serves to lock` the stanchion in open position to the stall.
A further objectV of the invention is to provide a stanchion in which the movable member thereof is directly connected at both ends to the other member in both open and closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stanchion which is of simple construction, is strong and durable and which may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
With the above and other objects in view the invention relates to the improved stanchion and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and Vall equivalents thereof.

Referring to the drawing the numeral 8 indicates the supporting stanchion frame between' portions of which the improved stanchion is located. The frame, which for sanitary reasons is constructed." of -metal tubing,'consist`s of two vertical tubes 9 having their upper portions 10.bent at an angle and their upper ends abutting to form the horizontal portion 11 of the frame. The abutting end portions of the tubes are secured together by a split coupling 12 having screw bolts 13 for clamping the tube ends therein. 4The coupling is alsoprovided with a medial recessed projection 14: through which extends the eyed pivot bolt 15, and to which bolt the stanchion is connected and supported therefrom. The upper end of the bolt is provided with an enlargement 15 positioned within the recess thus providing a pivotal connection between the bolt and the coupling. The lower ends of the vertical tubes are vmounted in the floor 16, usually formed of cement. Y
The'improvedl stanchion 17 proper consists of, a U-shaped stationary stanchion bar 1S with the stems 1,9 and 19 extending in lhorizontal position and forming the upper and lower portions of the stanchion and the bottom portion 2O of the U-shape forming ,the side portion thereof. -Thestems 19 and 19 of the U-shaped bar extend through upper and lower connecting sleeve members 21 and 22. which serve to connect the stationary bar to the movable bar 23. The lower connecting sleeve member 22 is of split formation anda bolt 24 passing trans'- versely through split portions of the lower sleeve .clamps the sleeve adjustably on the sidev bar lower stem. An eyed` bolt 26 clamped between downwardly projecting eyed ears 27 of the inner end portion of the lower sleeve extends pivotally through one of the links of a connecting chain 28 and vis provided with a head 26 for holding the chain connected thereto. The opposite ends of the chain are fastened to collars 29 mounted on the lower end portions of the stanchion frame. A guard member 31 formed of a U-shaped rod fastened to the vertically extending portion of the ixed stanchion bar is provided with a vertically extending portion 31 spaced, approximately, equi-distant in the space between the stanchion bar and the supporting frame and serves to prevent the animal from placing his head in said space in entering` the stall. The movable stanchion barY 23 is also formed of metal tubing and its lower end extends into a recess of the lower coupling and is pivotally connected to said coupling by va transverse bolt 32. The upper connecting sleeve member 21 is fastened to and supported from the eyed bolt 15 by a transversely extending bolt 33 which passes through upstanding lips 34 formed on the said sleeve member. This upper member is also of split formation and is clamped to the upper stem by a clamping bolt 35 which extends through a depending recessed and split portion 21 of the sleeve. The upper end of the movable stanchion bar 23 has fulcrumed thereon an angularlocking member 38 normally, yieldingly held in locking position by a coiled spring 39 which is interposed between the bar 23 and the downwardly extending operating handle portion 40 of said locking member. The inner-end portion of said locking member is in the formiof a hook 41 which enters the recessed portion of the depending part 21 and snaps over a locking shoulder 42 formed in said recessed portion and locks the movable stanchion arm in closed position. The locking member is also provided with a bifurcated outwardly projecting arm 43 which straddles one of the vertical portions of the stanchion frame when the movable stanchion arm is swung to open position and looks the stanchion in said position. While the movable arm is in this open position it also serves as a vguard to direct the animals head in the stanchion opening. The upper end of the said stanchion bar 23 has also pivotally connected thereto and on the same pivot pin 25 a supplemental angular locking member 44 which extends upwardly and inwardly above the upper sleeve 21 and lockingly engages a shoulder 21 formed on said sleeve. A medial portion of the upper portion of the supplemental locking member is provided with an elongated opening 45 through which the upper stem 19 and the upper sleeve 21 extend and the side portions of the upper sleeve are provided with horizontally projecting ribs 46 upon which the supplemental member rests and which serve to guard the said locking member from being accidentally moved by the animal to open position. This supplemental locking member is provided with a projecting lug 47 which rests upon the hook portion 41 of the other locking member and is moved to open position thereby so that when the handle 40 is pressed against the movable stanchion bar both locking members will be opened. It will be noted that the upper stem 19 of the U-shaped member is of greater length than the lower stem. This increased length serves as a guide for the movable stanchion when moved to open position. The outer end of the stem is provided with a stop 45 to limit the outward swing of the movable arm. The supplemental locking member 44 is provided with a projecting knob 44 for moving said member independently of the other locking member. ln the modified form shown in Fig. 4 the lug 47 of the supplemental looking member is omitted to provide for the independent opening of said locking members.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the stanchion is of very simple construction and is well adapted for the purpose described.
lhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A stanchion, comprising an upper sleeve member having a'plurality of locking shoulders, a lower sleeve member, a U-shaped side member having stern portions which Vadjustably extend through the sleeve members, the upper stem portion being of greater length than the lower stem portion, said sleeve members also having means for pivotal connection with a support, a movable side member pivotally connected to the lower sleeve member, an angular locking member pivotally and yieldingly connected to the upper end portion of the movable side member and positioned to engage one of the locking shoulders of the upper sleeve, said locking ymember also having a bifurcated outwardly extending arm for engaging the support to hold the stanchion in fixed open position, and a supplemental locking member pivotally connected to the movable side member and engaging another locking shoulder of the upper sleeve, said supplemental locking member having a projecting lug which is engaged by the first mentioned locking member for imparting movement to the supplemental locking member.
2. A stanchion, comprising an upper and a lower member, a U-shaped stationary member adjustably connected thereto, a movable side bar pivotally connected to the lower member, a keeper within a hollow in the upper member, a locking latch pivotally connected to the upper end portion of the movable side bar for engaging said keeper to lock the stanchion closed, and a supplemental 'locking member operatively connected with said locking latch and having a locking engagement with said upper member, said supplemental locking member beingy slidably mounted on the upper portion of the stationary member to guide the side bar into and out of locking position.
3. In a stanchion, the combination of a top bar provided with a locking keeper Within the hollow thereof and a locking keeper on the outside thereof and a guide member connected to said top bar, a movable side bar, a locking latch pivotally connected to Said side bar and movable to locking engagement with the keeper Within the bar, and a locking latch carried by said side bar and surrounding said guide and slidably movable thereon into and out of locking position with the keeper on the outside of the top bar.

In a stanchion, the combination With the upper relatively fixed portions thereof, of a movable side bar, a locking hook and a locking yoke operatively connected together and to said side bar for securing said side bar to said iXed portions in closed position7 said yoke being slidably mounted upon said xed portions to guide the side bar into and out of closed position.
5. In a stanchion, the combination With an upright having upper and loWer hori- Zontal extending portions, of adjustable sleeves mounted on said upper and loWer portions, a movable side bar pivoted to the lower sleeve, a locking yoke operatively connected to said side bar and slidably mounted on the upper horizontal portion and adapted to lock With the upper sleeve, and a looking latch operatively connected to said side bar for engagement Within said upper sleeve7 said locking members being independently movable to locking positions and jointly movable to unlocking position.
