GAS-STOVE DAMPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
Application filed June 14, 1915. Serial No. 34,115.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER F. AXroRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Gas-Stove Damper, of which the following is a specification, in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a damper for gas stoves which are attached to coal stoves and an object of the invention is to provide automatic means whereby upon the lighting of the gas oven the damper will be opened, thereby allowing the gas fumes from the oven to pass out through the coal stove flue.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that because of the considerable amount of gas used for the operation of an oven some means must be provided for the escape of the gas from the gas stove, while if the coal stove to which the gas stove is attached is in use, it is necessary to close the draft on the gas stove in order to make the coal stove draw, and this invention seeks to provide means whereby the attention of the householder will be unnecessary in the shifting of the gas stove damper.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there may be many modifications thereof.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the coal stove with the gas stove attached thereto, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the coal stove with the gas flue attached thereto, Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the gas stove oven with parts thereof broken away for purposes of illustration, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the rod which operates the damper extending from front to rear of the gas stove oven.
The numeral 1 represents the coal stove legs, 2 the top of the coal stove, 3 the oven door and 4 the fire door of the coal stove. The gas stove is secured to the coal stove by having its top 6 slotted to pass over lugs 7 and 8 on the top flange of the coal stove. The gas stove is provided with top burners 9, 10 supplied with gas from the pipe 11. The gas oven 12 is heated from two burners 13, 14: which are supplied with gas from the petcocks 15, 16.
The heat and waste gases from the burners 13, 14 pass into the top of the oven at 17 and 18 and out through openings at the back of the revoluble damper 19, said damper having a bracket 20 to prevent pans from being pushed against it and prevent its operation. Connected with the damper is a long rod or link 21 which at its lower end is connected to one arm 22 of a double bell crank 23 which extends from front to rear of the oven and has an arm 21 at the front which stands in the way of an arm 25 on a slidable bar 26. V
The slidable bar 26 is supported in brackets 27, 28 and has lugs 29, 3O thereon, which lugs stand in such a position with respect to the handles 31, 32 of the oven burner petcocks as to prevent said petcocks from being opened unless the slotted bar 26 is pushed to the left, Fig. 2, and when so pushed to the left the damper 19 is turned to permit the escape ofthe gas fumes from the oven, while as soon as the gas burner has been turned out the weight of the rod 21 will cause the damper to rotate to the closed po sition.
The gases escape from the coal stove through the flue 34 and pass from the gas stove to the coal stove through a flue 35 detachably connected with the gas stove and coal stove.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows, express reservation being made of permissible modified forms:
A device of the class described comprising the combination of a stove having a fire box and a flue, with a gas stove having gas burners, an oven and a flue connected with the flue of the first stove, a movable damper adapted to close openings from the oven of the gas stove into the flue leading to the first stove, a link supported by the damper and adapted to close the same by gravity, gas burners for heating the gas oven, valves for supplying gas to the gas burners, operating handles for said valves, and slidable rods having arms adapted to stand in the path of the valve handles for opening the in the presence of the two subscribed Witdamper when the gas valves are opened, the nesses.
damper closing by gravity When the gas is WALTER F. AXFORD. turned 01f. Witnesses:
