BLOW-BATTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
Application filed June 26, 1916. Serial No. 105,849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blow-Rattles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a toy for children which will amuse and interest the child in that a wheel turns around rapidly close to his eyes, and at the same time a rattling noise is produced, the source of the noise being entirely concealed, and the above effects are caused by the child blowing into a mouth-piece or tube.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a broken side view of my improved toy; Fig. 2 is a broken edge view thereof.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a pipe formed at one end into a mouth-piece 2 and around which is secured, preferably by cement, a coil 3 of wire, the ends of which are extended approximately parallel with each other, on opposite sides of an approximately cylindrical container, to the middle thereof, and then are bent inwardly, as shown at 4, and extend through central holes in the sides of the container to form trunnions therefor. Said container is formed of thin sheet material, as metal or celluloid, which is resonant and is made in two sections 6, 7, each of a general cupshaped form. The approximately circular margin 8 of the section 6 is within that of the section 7, and is undulatory in form so as to form small projections 9, while the approximately circular margin 10 of the cupshaped section 7 has extending therefrom radially at regular intervals hollow squareended projections 11 forming vanes. The outer end of the tube 1 is bent so that it is directed at an angle of about 60 with faces of succeeding vanes 11 as the container rotates. By blowing through the pipe 1, the container is caused to rotate. In the container are small round comparatively heavy objects 12, which, as the container rotates, continually change their positions in the retainer, and on account of the undulatory form of the margin 8, produce a rattling noise. The sides of the sections 6, 7 slope toward said margin 8 so that said objects 12 always tend to fall against said margin.
The operation of the toy is very pleasing to the child, as he can watch the wheel turnhaving external vanes, a pipe formed with a mouth-piece and having an open end directed against the faces of said vanes as the container rotates, and small objects loose in said container adapted to produce a rattling sound by impact against a wall of the container.
2. In a blow-rattle, the combination of a closed rotatable container of sheet material having external vanes, a pipe formed with a mouth-piece and having an open end directed against the faces of said vanes as the container rotates, means supported by said pipe on which the container is rotatably mounted, and small objects loose in said container adapted to produce a rattling sound by impact against the wall of the container.
3. In a blow-rattle, the combination of a closed rotatable container of sheet material having external vanes, a pipe formed with a mouth-piece and havin an open end directed against the faces of said vanes as the container rotate, an inner wall of the container havin a series of small projections, and small 0 jects loose in said container adapted to produce a rattling sound by impact against said wall.
4. In a blow-rattle, the combination of a closed container of sheet material comprising two sections secured together at their margin, the margin of one container being formed with a series of small projections, the margin of the other container being formed with external vanes, and a pipe formed with a mouth-piece and having an open end directed against said vanes as the container rotates, and small objects loose in said container adapted to produce a rattling sound by impact against the wall of the container.
FRANK YOUNG.
