To al?, whom it may concern Be it known that SAM J. citizen of the United States, Marble, in the county of Cherokee and State of North Carolina, havev invented certain new and usefullinprovements in Tricycles; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine. This invention relates to tricycles, and the primary object ofhe invention is to provide a motor driven tricycle which will eliminate' for propelling thel tricycle. i
Another object of this invention is to attach an internal combustion engine to a triand to connect the ordinary type of hand propelling mechanism to the engine in such a manner that the operation ofthe hand propelling mechanism v will 4crank the engine for starting the same. With the forcgoingand other objects in yiew this invention consists in such novel .features of construction, combination and arrangementcf parts as will be hereinafter more' fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
ln describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved-tricycle. The tricycle supporting frame hasfia rod. 15 secured thereto and extending forwardly therefrom which rod has itsouter ends enlarged as is shown at 16 to provide a bearing surface for supporting boxings or bearing blocks 17, which rotatably support iaishaft 18. The ends 16 of the rod 15 are braded'by an arch 19 which extends transversely across the tricycle frame and has its en ds',seeifred ly to the upper surface of the terminals yof the rod 15.
The shaft 18 has a sprocket 2Q mounted thereupon, about which a sprocket chain 21 travels. .The sprocket chain 21 travels through va guide 22 which is carried by the sprocket 23 whichis` positioned upwardly of the shaft 18 and is carried by a shaft 2 4, which is supported by a suitable bracket 26. The shaft 2 4 has a crank handle 25 connected thereto sel as to provide for the manual rotation of the sprocket 23 for manually rotating the shaft 18, the purposeofwhich will be hereinafter morev fully described.
Thefork 6 has an arm 27 secured to its upper end, which arm is in turn Connected'to a rod 28. The rod 28 extends rearwardly above the forward end of the frameand from the fork 6, and is connected to a link 29, which link is in turn connected to the lower end of van upstanding rod 30, which is provided .with a handle 31 mounted upon its upper end, for rotatingthe upstanding rod 30 for moving the fork 6 and the front wheel 7 carried thereby, forvguiding the direction of travel of the tricycle.
The shaft 18 has a sprocket 55 mounted thereon which' has a clutch segment 36 formed upon one face thereof, which is adapted for engagement with a cooperating clutchsegment 37 formed upon one side o the sprocket 20, for rotating the sprocket 35 and the shaft 18 synohronouslywith the rotation of the sprocket 20 by .the hand crank 25. The sprocket 35 has a sprocketpohain .38 passing thereabout, which sprocket chain also travels about a sprocket 39 which is mounted upon the power shaft 40 of an ordinary internal combustion engine 41. The engine 41 is supported .by suitable bracket arms 42 which are 'secured in any suitable of the tricycle 1, rearwardly of the foot rest 10 and the seat 8 and supplies the necessary power ferpropelling .the tricycle, through the connection with the shaft 18 bv the sprockets 35 and 39 and the sprocket chain 38. A fuel retaining tank 43 is secured to one of the handles or arm rests 44 of the tricycle outwardly thereof, by suitable metallic straps 45. The fuel retaining tank has communication with the carbureter or mixing valve through a metal tube 47, which extends across and is secured to the under surface of the seat 8. The volatile fuel is fed from the carbureter or mixing valve into the combustion chamber of the engine in the ordinary manner.
The tank 43 is divided into a plurality of compartments the forward end 48 of the same forming a lubricant retaining tank, to
. which is connected a lubricant carrying tube 49. The lubricant carrying tube 49 extends to the various parts of the' internal combustion engine or motor 41 andr the various other parts of the machine which need lubrication.
The standard 50 which supports the vertical rod 30 has a timer mechanisml mounted adjacent the upper end thereof which embodies a lever 51, for controlling the spark of the engine, which is furnished bybatteries or other suitable mechanisms carried by a retaining box 52. The timer 51 is connected to a make and break circuit mechanism 54 of the ordinary construction car-- ried by a retaining box 52 for eontrolling'the time of the spark of the engine.
The shaft 18 has pulleys 55 and 56 mounted thereupon adjacent its outer ends, about which pulleys travel belts 57 and 58 respectively. The belts 57 and 58 travel about rim pulleys 59 and 60. respectively, vwhich are carried by thespokes of the rearwheels 3 and 4 of the tricycle, for rotating the wheels 3 and 4 by the action of the engine 41 for propelling the tricycle.
A pair vof idlei's G2 and 62a are supported by an angled rod 63 and rest upon the belts 57 and 58. The idlers 62 and 62a are provided for tensioning the belts 57 and 58 for regulating the "speed of rotation of thel wheels 3 and 4 thereby regulating the speed of travel of the tricycle. The angled shaftV G3 is carried by a boxing 64, which is in vturn connected to a hand lever (l5 which is pivotally supported by the frame of the tricycle and extends' upwardly, having its upper end positioned forwardly of the seat 8, for convenient access by a person seated upon the same. A quadrant GG is supported by the under surface vof the scat 8 and engages the lever 65 for holding the same rigidly in various adjusted positions thereby holding the idleis 62 and G2a in adjusted positions upon the belts 57 and 58 for regulating the tension of the same for loosening or tightening the friction of the belts upon the rim pulleys 59 and (30 for regulating the speed of -rotation of the wheels 3 and 4.
The rearraxle 2 ofthe tricycle has a supporting arm 67 secured thereto and extending forwardly therefrom, to the forward end lever and the bracket 67. The link 701s connected to a friction brake band 72 which passes about a friction brake pulley 73 carried by the rear axle, and is secured in any suitable manner to the upper surface of the bracket arm 67 as is shown at 74,'so that y when the lever 69 is oscillated, the brake band 72 will be tightened or loosened upon the friction brake drum 73 for facilitating or retardingthe travel ofthe tricycle, depending upon the direction in which the lever 68 is moved. The arm or bracket 15 /is supported by suitable bracing arms 7C, which extend forwardly from the supporting structure of the tricycle and are secured to the boxing 17 for steadying the movement of the shaft 18.
A mufller 77 of'ordinary construction is connected to the end of the exhaust pipe 78 of the motor or engine 41 and is provided for decreasing the sound of exhaust of the engine. lVlien it is desired to operate the improved motor driven tricycle, the spark regulating mechanism 51 is properly set for permitting of the sparking of the engine, and the shaft 18-is manually rotated through the rotation of the sprocket 23 by the crank handle This cranks or starts the engine or 'motor 41, and provides for initiative movement thereof until the proper gas has been administered to the combustion chamber and exploded therein, for operating the engine yupon its own power. The engine will transmit its Ipower to the. -shaft 18 througlithe medium of the sprockets 35, 39 and the sprocket chain 38, in the manner heretofore described. The power of the m0- tor or engine will in turn be imparted to the rear wheels 3 and 4 of the tricycle by means of the pulleys 55, 56, the rim pulleys 59 and 60 and the belts 57 and 58, providing means for propelling the tricycle. The speed. of travel of the tricycle is regulated by the adjusting of the idler GZ for regulating the tension of the lieltas it passes about the rim pulley (30, and by operatingv the brake lever 68 the travel of the tricycle may be retarded or completely stopped if it is so desired.
