To all whom it may concern y Be it known that I, THEoDoini RAY MINERT, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey with deep well pumpsl for pumping a steady stream of water or other liquid and with air compressors.
An object of this invention is to arrange the pump operating mechanism` symmetrically about a center line, whereby lateral forces are evenly distributed, friction and wear of the working parts lare reduced to a minimum, and the partsy arranged in coinpact form.
A further object is to combine into a single structure a plurality of devices of the character stated, wherein a double acting pump can be operated by a minimum amount of power and wherein side thrust is materially reduced, thus obviati'ng noise and clatter as with structures now in common use. As a i. resulty of these features, a smoothly operating mechanism is produced, which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, admitting of` application to pumps of various kinds for raising water and other liquids and compressing air with a minimum amount'of power, and in a constant steady stream or supply.
Vith the above objects and others which will be apparent to those familiar with the art, to which this invention relates, my invention comprises the features of oonstruction and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention; Fig. 2 is aside elevation partly in section; Fig. 3 is a section of a detail taken on theline VX-X of Fig.` 2; Fig. t is another section of a detail taken on the line iT-Y, of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a view illustrating diagrammatically the principle of operation of my invention.
My invention is particularly although not exclusively adapted for use in operating double acting pumps employing two reciprocating elements adaptedy to be. driven to raise liquid in a steady stream. The pump to which the invention is applicable is of ordinary construction, and not therefore illustrated in the drawing, itk being sufficient to indicate the reciprocating connections by which 4my improved apparatus is connected with the pump.
I employ three power units indicated by A, Band C upon the drawings, said uits being substantially similar in construction, and operated by a single drive shaft such as 2, which is journaledy for illustration in a suitable supporting franie D The unit A is adapted to be connected with the stem or inside shaft 3 leading downwardly and adapted to be connected with one of the pump pistons, while the units B and C are connected to the tube or outside shaft 4 to .reciprocate thesame, said outside shaft being, connected to the other pump piston and slidably supporting thestem 3 therein. To briefly describethe features in each of said units, reference will first be made to the diagrammatic view illustrated in Fig. 5,- and the main elements therein pointed out and the inode of operation thereof explained .so as tok layV proper foundation for a description of they details of construction-to follow.

This crank gear wheel is journaled upon an eccentric pivotal connection 7 carried by the lower end of a hanger 8,. said hanger being pivotally suspended from a shaft 9 at its upper end and said shaft being Carried by the upper end of the frame D. Arranged below the mechanism described is a reciprocating member such as 3 or l out of alineinent with said hanger support, said reciprocating element 3 being pivotally connected to one end of a pitman 14e, the opposite end of said pitman having eccentric pi'votal connection at 15 with said crank gear. The latter connection is diametrically opposite to the pivotal connection between the hanger and said crank gear. As a result reciprocating motion is imparted to the pump element such as 3 or 4, b`y the crank gear. A'The path, which the pivotal connection 15 describes is in an elliptical line, the long axis of the ellipse being up and down .and in substantial alinement with the reciprocating movement of the reciprocating element such as 3cr 4. rlhe vellipse referred to is irregular, one side thereof being shorter than the other, caused by the swinging movement ofthe link, whereby a quicker downward thrust is impartedbyY the kcrank gear to the pump element such as 3 or l than the upstroke or return movement. As before stated, my invention includes in addition to the Vsimplest form of construction described,a plurality of pump operating devices symmetrically arranged, so
- as to compensate lateral thrust, -whieh usually tends to produce friction, jar, irregularity and noise, rendering the apparatus inefficient. v
The frame D as illustrated is composed of a suitablebase 20, upon which is mounted two end members 20 and 21, across the upper portions of whichV is secured a stationary supporting shaft 22. Disposed horizontally across the space between the end members 20 and 21 is a horizontal brace or buttress 23 and depending from and secured to the base-20 is a yoke frame 24, the

which the tubular pump shaft el slides., The upper end of the inner pump shaft 3 is secured by a coupling 26 to an inner cross head 27, which is mounted to slide vertically in a pair of oppositely disposed guides 28, and 29, said guides being rigidly secured by their lower ends to the base 2O and by their upper ends to the buttress 28. Pivotally attached to the inner cross head 27 is a pitman 8O corresponding to the pitman lil, the upper end of said pitman being secured by an eccentric pivotal connection 31 to the inner adjacent faces of a pair of crank gears 32 and 33 placed side by side and spaced apart. rfliese crank gears 82 and 33 have journaled upon their outermost sides, a pair of hangers 36 and 37, byl eccentric pivotal connections 34 and 35V, which are diametrically opposite the pivotal connection 31, between the pitman 30 and said crank gears. Said hangers are suspended by their upper ends from the supporting shaft 22. The crank gears 32 and 33 are formed on their outermost sides with projecting hubs or shoulders 38 and 39, and upon these hubs'are freely journaled straps 40 and 41, said straps being rigidly coupled together by a spacing bar 13. The straps 40 and 41 are respectively carried by or formed upon links 114 and 45 each corresponding with the link element 12. These links 14e and L15 are pivotallyinounted upon the single drive shaft 2, whereby the'crank gearsare free to swing up and down as they turn in the straps on the links and as they revolve eccentrically about their journalconnections with Vsaid hangers. In this manner the parts of the apparatus which convert the revolving motion of the drive shaft into the reciprocating motion of a pump shaft are symmetrically arranged about a vertical center line passing downwardly through the pivot point of the hangers support.
Units B and C are each similar in construction to the element A, excepting that a i different mechanism is employed for connecting the pitmen thereof to the outside reciprocating pumping element 4t as will be hereinafter described. A detail description of each vof these units is not therefore necessary, the description of the unit A suiiicing. However it will be noted that the units B and C are driven by the same drive shaft 2 `which operates the unit A, and that the position of the pitmen of the units B and C is such thatv the extreme end of the upstroke of the inside pump shaft 3 occurs simultaneously near the extreme end of the down stroke of the outside pump shaft land that said strokes overlap. The units B and C are positioned evenlyy on the opposite sides of the unit A, said unit A occupying a position midway between them. The'pitmen l50 and 51 Yrespectively of the units B and C are rigidly coupled to an outside cross-head 52, 130
saidcross-head being slidablymounted on the outer surfaces off the guide members 28 andV 29 and causedl to be moved vertically thereby. The cross-head1' 52 issecured tothe upper end of the outside pump shaft 4 by a PlllralityY of. vertice-trede 53 and. a Coupling 54 secu-redto the member4, alll of said parts being symmetrically arranged so as to minimize'all side thrust. By employing(- inside and outside cross-heads the parts are arranged in more compact form and the height of the entire structure reduced.
In operation the drive shaft 2 is revolved continuously at even surface speed, and the revolving motion thereof is converted into the reciprocating motion of the pump actuating shafts 3 and 4, said shafts being reciprocated upwardly successively at even intervals and returning downwardly by quick return strokes. The distribution of all of the parts of the apparatus being symmetrically arranged reduces friction, lateral thrust and noise to a minimum, thus converting rotary motion into reciprocating motion by smoothly operating working parts. As a result an even steady stream of water or other liquid or air is delivered by the pumping apparatus. Obviously the operation of the mechanism can be reversed and a quick up stroke and slow return stroke of the pumping mechanism produced.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best Aembodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. Pumping apparatus, comprising, in combination, a pair of adjacent co-axially arranged pump shafts arranged to reciprocate successively, a revoluble driving element journaled on a fixed support, a plurality of crank members, pitmen connected t0 said pump shafts and by eccentric pivotal connections to said crank elements arranged to reciprocate said pump shafts successively,
' means carried by said revoluble shaft for revolving said crank elements, links pivoted substantially on the axis of said revoluble driving member in the free portions of which said crank elements are journaled, and hangers hung from a fixed Support and having eccentric pivotal connection with said crank elements substantially diametrically opposite said pivotal connections to said pitmen.
2. Pumping apparatus, comprising, in combination, a pair of adjacent pump shafts travel one within the other and to which said pump shafts are respectively attached, and pitmen connected to said cross-heads and to said crank elements by eccentric pivotal connections substantially diametrically opposite said pivotal connections to said hangers.
3. Pumping apparatus, comprising, in combination, a pair of pump shafts to be reciprocated successively, a revoluble driving element journaled on a fixed support, a plurality of crank gears, pitmen connected to said pump shafts and by eccentric pivotal connections to said crank gears arranged to reciprocate said pump shafts successively, a gear connection carried by said revoluble shaft having teeth in mesh with the teeth of said crank gears, links pivoted substantially on the axis of said revoluble shaft and in the free portions ofwhich said crank gears are journaled, and hangers hung from a fixed support and having eccentric pivotal connections with said crank gears arranged substantially diametrically opposite said pivotal connections to said pitmen.
4. Pumping apparatus, comprising, in combination, a pump shaft to be reciprocated, a revoluble shaft, the motion thereof to be converted into the reciprocating motion of said pump shaft, a 'gear wheel mounted on said revoluble shaft, a crank gear having teeth in mesh with the teeth of said gear carried by said revoluble shaft, a link pivoted on said revoluble shaft and in the free end of which said crank gear is journaled, a fixed support in which said revoluble shaft is journaled, a hanger hung from said support and having an eccentric pivotal connection with said crank gear, and a pitman connected with said pump shaft and having an eccentric pivotal connection with .said crank gear disposed substantially diametrically opposite the pivotal connection between said hanger and crank gear, said pump shaft being arranged out of alinement with said hanger support for Vthe purposes specified.
