To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. Bassnr'r, a citizen of the United States, IQSICling at North Braddock, in the county of companying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation, illustrating the application of the invention in connection with a window, a part of the latter being broken away; Fig. 2 is an edge view illustrating the manner in which the lock device is arranged relatively to the window sashes; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view, partly broken away, of the lock case; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the lock mechanism, the case being shown in section; Fig. 5 is a section on'the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a detail view of a form of key to be used in operating the lock.
Before proceeding with the description of the drawings, I desire to call particular attention to the fact while I have evolved my invention with reference to its application in connection with the upper and lower sash of a window, the same may be readily utilized as a lock means in connection with any form of device wherein elements are slidable relative to each other within a frame therefor.
Referring now to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the window frame, 2 the upper sash and 3 the lower sash, the
'latter having attached thereto as indicated at 4: the lock case 5 within which the lock mechanism comprising the pres ent lnvention is arranged. Said lock case 5 comprlses a strip of metal bent as indicated in Fig. 3 to form the top and ends of the lock case, the sides and bottom of the said case being formed by a second strip of metal designated 6, bent as shown in F1g. 5 to fit between the respective ends of the case, the said casing section 6 being 1n engagement with the top edge of the lower sash 3 towhich it is attached. The respective ends of the said lock case are extended, extension 7 being somewhat elongated and being attached as indicated at 4: to the inner face of the window sash; the extension 8 being dividedv longitudi- 'nally as at 9, said extension being attached in any suitable manner to the outer face of the lower sash, preferably within a countersink therefor.
Within the lock case, designated as an entlrety by the numeral 5, a locking bolt 10 is arranged, said bolt, as illustrated in Fig. 4 being normally held in a position whereby to project exteriorly of the look through the opening 9. A stem 11 is formed upon the said bolt 10, said stem 11 operating within an opening 12 in the lock case, and being embraced by a spring 13 abutting at one end the said bolt 10 and at the opposite end the inner wall of the lock case, the opening, when spring is depressed by movement of the bolt, permitting the stem to operate therein. Pins 14; projecting laterally from the bolt 10 limits movement of the bolt in one direction. An arm 15 integral with or attached to the bolt 10 extends parallel with stem 11 of the bolt and has formed thereupon at a point intermediate its ends an extension 16, the latter being engageable with a key 17 insertible through an opening 18 of the lock case, said key when operated, in a manner to be hereinafter fully described, providing for movement of the bolt 10 against tension of said spring 13. Arm 15 by reason of its engagement with the lock case in one position of the sliding bolt limits movement of the said bolt when operated.
As a means whereby the bolt 10 may be locked against sliding movement I provide a tumbler 19 to which is attached a knob 20,
' the latter operating within a slot 21 of the lock case and being normally held in engagement with the bolt through the medium of a spring '22 within the case. By sliding the tumbler 19 against. tension of said spring 22, said tumbler is moved out of engagement with the bolt 10 and pin 14, in which event, manipulation of key 17 will provide for movement of bolt 10 against tension of spring 13 to in this manner provide for an unlocking of the look.
A look plate 23 is secured as at 24 to the upper sash 2, said plate having a plurality of uniformly spaced openings 25 formed therein, which openings are adapted to receive the bolt 10 when extended or projected,
the engagement between the said bolt and the said plate preventing movement of one of the sashes in one direction independently of the other. The bolt 10 being beveled as indicated at 26, and the beveled edge being engageable with the bottom edge of the opening within which the bolt is arranged, it is apparent that bolt 10 may be moved against tension of spring 13 when tumbler 1,9 is withdrawn from engagement with the said bolt and the pin 14, such operation permitting the lower sash to be lowered and the upper sash to be raised irrespective of an unlocking operation by the use of the key.
To raise lower sash 3 or lower upper sash 2, knob 20 is grasped and moved in adirection whereby tumbler 19 is moved out of engagement with looking bolt 10 and pin 14 and, While thus out of engagement, key 17 is inserted within opening 18 therefor and turned to engage extension 16 of arm 15, in which event, key is pulled outwardly away from the lock case to withdraw bolt from engagement with the lock plate 23 and against tension of spring 13, and, when entirely withdrawn, permit movement of either the sash 3 or the sash 2 in a manner desired.
If it is desired that the locking bolt 10 be retracted and so held, it is but necessary to first disengage the tumbler 19 and the bolt, next withdraw the bolt against tension of the spring 13 sufficiently to cause the pin 7 14 to be arranged upon the opposite longitudinal edge of the tumbler 19 from that which it engages when in the position shown in Fig. a, and, when thus positioned, next' release the tumbler, the latter automatically holding the bolt in its retracted position and against tension of the spring.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is apparent that the lock mechanism is quite simple and easy of operation; that in one movement of the sashes 2 and 3, key 17 need not be operated; and that when locked, window cannot be opened, or when locked partly open, cannot be farther opened, by a person not possessed of a key.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a window look, a lock case formed from an inverted'elongated substantially U-shaped metallic strip of a size to straddle and snugly engage with the top ledge of the lower window sash, means engaging with the extensions thus formed to fasten the lock case to the window sash, one of said extensions being bifurcated to provide an opening, a substantially U-shaped metallic strip mounted to extend transversely of said inverted strip. to form therewith the complete lock case, a bolt movable to a position from withinto a position without the lock case through said opening, a lock mechanism op eratively associated with said bolt, and a cooperating metallic strip provided with a plurality of apertures and adapted for securement to the upper sash to be engaged by the bolt, the engaging terminal of the bolt being beveled to retract automatically upon forced movement of either sash in one direction and to positively lock the window sashes against relative movement in an attempted movement of either window sash in the opposite direction.
