Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Apr. 8, 1919 application filed February 3, 1917. Serial a... 146,414.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. BRANTLEY,
citizen of the United States, residing at Sand Springs, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mining- Machines, of which the following is a specificatiom.
My present invention pertains to mining machines; and it has foritsgeneral object to provide a mining and tunneling machine,
designed more especially for coal mining or cutting operatlons, and constructed to travel on the ground or on rails, at the election of the operator, to turn as on a pivot, to afford a plurality of speeds, and to place its cutting mechanism .at various angles, as occasion demands. i
Other objects and advantageous features of the invention will be 'fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
. Figure l is a side elevation of the machine constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention that I have as'yet devised.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged rear elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail planwith the top of the casing body removed.
Figs. 4 and. 5 are detail longitudinal vertical sections taken in the planes indicated by the lines 44 and 5.5,-respectively, of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross-section on line 6-.6 of Fig. 3.
Figs. 7 and 8 are details hereinafter specifically referred to.
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary cross-section through the forward portion of the casing body.
Figs. 10, 11 and 12 are detail sections; Figs. IQ and 11 being taken on the lines 101-0 and 11 11, respectively, of Fig. 8.
Fig. 13 is a cross-section through the forward part of the casing body.
Fig. 14 is a cross-section on line 14-14: of Fig. 3.
Figs. 15 and 16 are detail broken views of portions of the mechanism.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel machine comprises a casing-like body 1 which in common with the remainder of the machine s preferably constructed of steel or of metal compatible with its purpose.
Suitably supportedand secured in the body 1 is an electric motor 2 which is the type of motor. I prefer to employ. I would have it understood, however, that in lieu of an electric motor, an internal combustion engine or any other kind of'motor may be employed without involving departure from the scope ofmy invention as defined in my appended claims.
In the present embodiment tion the motor 2'is supplied with current throughthe trailing Wires 3, Figs. 4 and 5, and the other appurtenances common to electric motors, which appurtenances are carried by the body 1 but need not be described in detail.
The armature shaft 4 of the motor ex-' tends forwardly from the remainder thereof, in thelongitudinal center of the machine, 'and'interp'osed between said shaft 4.- and a 'shaft 5 which extends through the forward wall'of body land carries a pinion-6, is a clutch 7. This clutch 7 may be of any suitable construction, and is designed to be operated by a lever 8 located at the back of the body 1 through a connection which per se forms no part of my invention and is therefore not illustrated. When the members of the clutch are disengaged the machine may be moved, turned and handled by its own power without operation of the cutting mechanism Which derives motion from the shaft 5 l as hereinafter set forth. When, however, the members of the clutch areengaged, the shaft 5 and the cutting mechanism alluded to will be actuated. From this it follows that while not essential to the practice of my invention, the clutch .7. is preferable because the cutting mechanism may be left idle and danger and Waste of current may be avoided incidental to the manipulation of the remainder of the mathe invenjournaled in the side'wallsfof the body. 1.
Mounted to slide on and turn withsaid shaft 11, at opposite sides of the worm-wheel 10, are combined friction and spur gears '12.
These gears 1:2 respectively comprise a soft-' steel hub 13, Fig. 12, feathered on the shaft i I of the compound worms 25.-
11, a central steel disk 14 loosely though.
"with the bottoms of the interdental spaces in the disk '14, and a nut l'Z-threaded on the hub 13 and adapted to tightenthe disk 14 and the sections 16 against a flange on the hub. In'the outer portions of the hubs 13 gears 12 are circumferential grooves in which are sectional rings 17? having studs 17 disposed inupright bifurcated levers 18 through the medium of which the compound gears 12 are moved horizontally on shaft. Each of the gears 12 is arranged back of and opposed to aninclined' steel disk 20, and each disk 20 is provided in its face with three (more or less) circular series of indentures21; the indentures of each series being spaced 'to receive the teeth of the gears 12. The disks are feathered on forwardly and downwardly inclined shafts 22', which are journaled in bearings 23, 24., in body 1 and are equipped with The said worms 25 are intermeshed with worm wheels26, fixed on shafts 27- on'which are alsofixed the exterior drive and traveling wheels 28 of the machine.
.In front of the disks 20 is a transverse shaft 30 on which is fixed an arm 31 to which is connected a rearwardly extending rod 32. This rod 32 is carried through the rear wall of the body 1, and is connected exteriorly of the bodyto a lever 33 at the rear end of 7 body .1 which lever is designed tobe actu- I expedient.
ated'to move the disks 20 toward and from.
the compound gears 12. 'Any suitable means (not shown) may be employed to adjustably such provision is deemedfix the lever 33 1f Also fixed on the shaft 30 are arms 35.
an adjustable manner, are yo 'e levers 36, and mounted at 37' in saidyoke levers are studs on setionalrings 38 which are dis-. posed in-circ'umferential grooves 39' in steel members 40 loose on the shafts 22 and arranged back of the hubs on the disks 20.
' Between each of the said members 40 and i thrust against its complementary gear .12.'
each of the disk hubs are interposed a steel race annulus 41 and a steel ring-42in which are anti-friction balls 43, interposed between the member 40 and the-ring 4:2 and vadapted to lessen. the friction when the disk 20 is For the purpose of enabling each lever 36 to pull its respective disk 20 away from the cooperating gear 12, links 44 are pivoted to the sides of'each lever 36.- The rear portions of said links 44 receive pins 45011 a sectional ring e6 disposed in .the' circumferential groove 47 of the disk hub.- It being remembered that the travelingwheels 28 are fixed on the-shafts 27 and that said shafts 27 are driven by their respective shafts 22 through the permanently inter-' meshed gears 25 and26, it will be understood that the traveling wheels 28 will be rotated when the disks 20 are thrust and held against the gears 12 and will be permitted to remain at rest when the disks 20 are drawn and held away from the gears 12.
As before stated the gears 12 are adapted to be moved by levers '18 lengthwise of the shaft 11, and'by so moving said gears 12 and changing their positions relative to the centers of the disks '20, thespeed of the traveling drive wheels 28 can be varied. Again, flwhen the gears 12 are moved across the centers of the disks 20 the direction of movement of the wheels 28 is reversed, but
in the first instance. Moreover, it is to be noted that the said construction constitutes positive driving connections for the independent operation of the driving wheels 28, so that one wheel 28 may be turned forwardly and the other backwardly to facilithe same variations of speed are available as tate turning of the machine as on a pivot;
I of the manufacturer of the machine without affecting my invention.
Mounted on spindles carried by the body' '1 and disposed in rear of thew'heels 28 are traveling wheels 50, and mountedon the said wheels 28 and 50 are caterpillar tractor belts 51. It, will also be noticed that the wheels 28 and 50 are flanged, as indicated by 52 to enable them to hold'to rails as 53 when it is desired to move the machine on a railway instead of on the ground.
For the purpose of moving the compound 20 I provide the longitudinal rock shafts 54 which extend through the rear wall of the body 1 and are provided immediately back of said wall with cranks 55 through the medium of which theyv may be turned about their axes said cranks 55 being provided as gears 12relative to the centers of the disks shown with means for adjustably fixing the shafts 54 to body'l. At their forward ends said rock shafts are provided with arms 56.
These arms are'connected by pins 57 with the levers-18; the said pinsbeing disposed and I movable in slots 58 of trated. v
Intermeshed with 'the' pinion 6, which is beveled as shown, is a beveled gear 60, fixed on a shaft 61 that is journaled in a vertically revoluble frame 62, disposed immediate] in 'front'of-the body 1. Also fixed on the 'sliaft 61 is a sprocket gear 63. A bar 64 is fixed to the levers as illusiso and extended forwardly from a frame 62 that is loosely mounted to swing on the shaft 61 at right angles thereto, and carried on said bar at the forward end thereof is a sprocket gear 65. Mounted on the gears 63 and 65 and actuated by the former is a sprocket belt 66 on which are carried cutter .members 67 and pick members 68. I desire it,distinctly-understood, however, that I do not confine myself to the employment of cutter members 67 and pick members 68 on the. belt 66, but that, on the other hand, the said belt 66 may be provided with any other means for cutting ordisintegrating coal or other substance without involving departure from the scope of my invention as claimed.
Fixed on the frame 62 and loosely receiving the shaft 61 is a gear 69 that describes the niaj or part of a circle,'and 70 is a toothed dog through the medium of which the frame 62 and the cutter bar 64: are held or-locked at the angle desired; The said dog 70 is 0pposed to the toothed edge ofgear 69, inside one arm of the vrevoluble frame 62, and is connected to and movable into and out of:
engagement with the ear 69 by hand levers 71. pivoted at 72 to sald arm of frame 62.
The vertically revoluble frame 62 is loosely mounted on the shaft 5, between the pinion 6 and the forward end, of the body 1, and has fixed to its rear end a spur gear 73' that is opposed to said end of the body 1 and is held thereagainst by strap keepers 74 which however do not interfere with the turning ofthe ear. g Arranged at the forwardend of thebody 1 with its toothed perimeter in opposed relationto and intermeshed with that of the gear 73 is a pinion 75. Said pinion 75 is carried on a short, longitudinally-disposed shaft 76 journaled in the forward wall of the body 1. At its rear end and within the body 1 the shaft 76 is equipped with a beveled gear 7 7.
This latter is arranged between beveled gears 4 578, carried by a common body 79 that is splined or feathered on a transverse shaft 80,
and is provided at one end with a circumferentially grooved portion 81. This latter is forthe reception of a sectional ring 82, having pins 83 which are pivoted in the bifurcated portion 84 of a transversely arranged link 85. At its end remote fromthe gear body 79 the said link 85 is pivotally connected to an arm 86 on a longitudinallydisposed rock shaft 87,- journaled in the body land extending through the rear wall-thereof. Immediately in rear of the body 1 said shaft 87 is equipped with ahandle 88 through the mediumof which the shaft may be c0nveniently rocked to position either of the gears 78 in mesh with the gear 77 or both out of engagement with said ear 77.
It will be understood that} when the shaft 80 is rotated during the operation of the machine, and when one ofthe gears 78 is] intermeshed with the pinion 77, the gear 73,
frame 62 and the cuttin mechanism will be turned in one directiona out the shaft 5, and when the other gear 78 is engaged with the pinion 77 the turning movement of the parts named will be in the opposite direction. I
The shaft 80 is equipped witha sprocket gear 89, fast thereon, and is driven from the transverse shaft 9 through the medium of a sprocket gear 90 thereon, and a sprocket belt 91 which connects the gears 89 and 90.
Loose on the shaft 80 is a miter gear 92 having a clutch member 93, and sphned or feathered on said shaft 80 is a complementary clutch member 94 that is movable through a lever 95 into and out of engagement with'the member 93 to render the same fast and loose, respectively, on the shaft. The lever 95 is adapted to be actuated from the rear end of the body 1 through the medium of an end-wise movable rod 96, and a handle 97, disposed at the rear end of said body 1. i
A miter gear 98 on a vertical shaft 99 is intermeshed withkthe gear 92, and hence when gear 92 is clutched to shaft the shaft 99 and the cleaning mechanism connected therewith will be driven. The cleaningv mechanismreferred to is for coeperationwith longitudinal steel ducts 100, one at each side of the bottom of the body 1, and said mechanism comprises a spur gear 99 onshaft 99, shortshafts 101 and 102 at opposed as shown to an opening 108 in the lower rear portion of the body 1.1; I Manifestly by operating the-handle 97 the machine attendant is enabled to start :81
stop the cleaning belt; the said belt being rendered idlewhen the machine isZnotcutting, this with a view to avoiding unnecessary wear and saving power.
"As is clearly shown in the drawings th e I rock shaft 87 is tubular throughout-fits length and is open at its opposite ends. This provision is made for the endwise movement a in said shaft of a rod 110 which is normally held in and returned tothe position shown i by a retractile spring 111. At is forward.
end said rod 110 is pivoted to one end of a1, lever 112, fulcrumed at 113 against the forf. r ward wall of the body 1 and pivoted at its v.'
opposite end to a latch 114 which is guided in the said body wall and is adapted to enter gear and the frame 62 with the cutting interdental spaces of or other apertures in thegea-r 73 with a view to'locking the said mechanism in the position desired.
Against the rear end of the rod 110, one
end of the handle 88 bears; the said handle being fulcrumed at 88 to a bracket 88 on an arm 88 fixed to the tubular rock shaft 87 and being provided with a latch pin 88, guided in the arm 88 and adapted to enter apertures 88 in the rear wall of the body 1.
It will be manifest in this connection that when the handle 88 is'swung rcarwardly the latch )in is' Withdrawn from engagement with t e body'wall and at the same time the rod 110 is moved forwardly, against the action of spring 111, to disengage latch'll l from the gear 73, afterwhich the handle 88 and the arm 88 may be swung to'rock the body 79 as desired relative to the bevel gear I 77 on the shaft 7 6.
1 In addition ,to theappurtenances hereinbefore enumerated,.the body 1 is provided at its rear end with an-electric switch 120 and an electric circuit breaker'121. These and their connections arenotof my mventlon,
pacity, this being due to the facility with and'being well lniow'm'it is not necessary to describe the same.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing v that I have provided a cutting and tunnel ing inachinethat is possessed of large cawhich the machine may be advanced and retracted as well as turned as a unit, and also mechanism, means for revolvingsaid frame,-
for lockingthe frame against revolving, the
to the facility with which the cutting mechanism may be manipulated and placed in various positions so as to operate to the best advantage. It will also be appreciated that the efliciencyof the machine. is also due in large measure to the fact that all of its work: in parts are controlled from a single point,
an thatbackl of the body 1 where an attendant can position himself and watch and con revolving; 6 0
trol the machine without subjectinghimself to the danger of being injured by the cutting mechanism.
