Be it known that 1, WILLIAM N. MARSDEN, a' citizen of the'United States, residing at of Montgomery, and
tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cam-Follower Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
Reference may ing drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. similar parts in the several figures therein.
This invention relates to cam-followermechanism engageable with teeth or steps on the periphery of a camwheel which teeth or steps are of substantially the same angular extent measured circumferentially of the wheel while the respective steps are at different distances from the center of the wheel.
The principal object of the invention is to produce a substantially uniform throw of the cam-follower-actuated-mechanism by the successive teeth or steps of the cam-wheel.
Other objects will appear 1n comiection with the following description.
The invention is particularly adapted for the cam-follower-mechanism of a fiat warp knitting machine such as is used in making cloth for the manufacture of gloves.

Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same taken on the broken line 2-2 in Fig.- 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the cam-follower-roller and the slideway for the member which carries the roller taken on the broken line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 is a cam-wheel, rotatively mounted on a frame, 2, of a machine to which my invention is to be applied, and 3 is a cam-followenactuated member in the form ofa bell-crank lever fulcrumed at l, upon the frame of the machine.

' The cam-wheel, 1, has on its periphery a series of teeth or steps, 1 of substantially the same angular extent measured circumferentlally of the'wheel, while the respective steps are at different distances from the center of th wheel.
A step-by-step rotative movement may be imparted to the cam-wheel, 1, in the usual or any known manner whereby its steps or teeth, 1", are successively brought into engagement with a cam-follower, 6, carried by the lever, 3.
In the preferred form of my invention, the cam-follower, 6, is in the form of a roller rotatively mounted in the lower end of an arm, 7, pendulously carried by the lower horizontal arm of the lever, 3.
The arm, 7, which forms a housing for the roller, 6., has its lower end laterally ofiset to form trunnion members, 8, which closely fit and are adapted to slidably reciprocate in openings in a slideway-frame, 9, in fixed relation to the main frame, 2, of the machine.
The slideway, 9, extends in a direction radial to the cam-wheel, 1, and is so located with respect to the successive idle positions of the cam-wheel that at each idle position thereof the cam-follower, 6, will engage one of the teeth or steps, 1, at substantially the middle of the tooth or step.
The cam-follower, 6, thus engages the successve teeth or steps on the periphery of the cam-wheel, 1, always at the same point which is in a straight line passing from the center of the cam-wheel to the center or the contacting point of the cam-follower, 6.
The movement imparted to the cam-follower is thus determined entirely by the distances from the center of the cam-wheel, 1

I have described my invention in its application to a single cam-Wheel.
In fast warp knitting machines, two or angular positions ,more cam-Wheels are employed, and I have shown in the drawings my invention applied to two such cam-wheels fixed upon the same shaft, 10, but as each of the cam-folduplicate of the other, further description of the same is unnecessary.
, In the drawings one of the cam-followerrollers is shown engaging a step 01' tooth on one of the cam-wheels at a substantially different distance from the axis of the camwheels than the tooth or step on the other cam-wheel which is engaged by the other cam-follower-roller.
WVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Ina device of the class described and in combination, a frame; a cam rot-atively mounted upon the frame and having peripherally disposed steps or teeth at different distances from its axis of rotation, said steps or teeth being of equal angular extent measured circumferentially of the cam; a slideway in fixed relation to said frame extending in a direction radial to said cam; a cam-follower-roller engageable with the successive steps or teeth on said cam; an arm carrying said eam-follower-roller, said arm having, on its inner end a trunnion concentrio with said roller movable rockablyand longitudinally in said slideway; and amember having a pivotal connection with the outer, end of said arm, whereby said memher is actuated by said cam.
