Description
t. J BROOKS.
STRAP TIGHTENING TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 28. 1918.
Patented Apr. 1,1919.
EIDW t To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and- State of NeW.Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strap- Tightening Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to strap tightening tools for tightening the overlapped ends of a metallic or other strap ing means being shown'at the end of its feeding stroke.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fractional view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, with the strap tightening means at the end of its return stroke.
1 indicates a support here forming the base of the tool from which rises the sidewall 2 having an end portion 3 terminating short of the baseas shown to provide an opening 4 for the ends of the strap. Secured to the end portion 3 is a second sidewall "5-also terminating short of the base portion to provide opening 6 so that the base can be slipped under the strap ends.
7 is arotatable member conveniently mounted for free rotation on stud 8 and provided with a segment 9 slidingly mount ed by means of pins 10 and elongated slots 11. 12 is an actuating means in the form of a handle mounted to rotate on stud 8 and extends out through the opening 13 of member 7. -14 is a cam formed on the lower end of 12 and acting against sliding segment 9.
- When handle 12 is turned from the position 'shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 1, cam 14 will engage segment 9 and move it outwardly at the same time. rotating member 7. This feeding stroke will cause segment 9 to tighten the strap whose overlapped ends 15 are on the support. When handle 12 is moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 3, cam 14 will, before member 7 commences Specification of Letters Patent.

backward rotation, disengage segment 9 thereby permitting the latter to move inwardly as member 7 returns.
To prevent retrograde movement of the strap during the return stroke of member 7 there is provided 'a pivotally supported detent 16 mounted at 17 and normally held in engagement with the strap ends by reason of springlS bearing against pin 19 on the detent, the spring pressure being of such a character that tightening of the strap ends under the influence of the action of member 7 may take place but retrograde movement is prevented.
20 indicates a latch pivotally supported at 21 which when moved into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1 will act against pin 19 and lift detent 16 out of engagement with the strap ends and will remain in such. position because outer end 22 of said latch will have passed over the vertical center line of pin 19 and consequently spring 18 will hold the parts in this position. To restore detent 16 to engagement with strap 15 latch 20 is moved into. the full line position shown in Fig. 1 when spring 18 will automatically press detent 16 against the strap.
The supporting member 1 may be provided with a roughened upper surface as is customary in devices of this character or as herein shown it may be provided with adjustable surface members 23 seated in openings 24 of the base portion and adjustable by means of screws 25, the head of each screw being located between member 23 and plate 26, said plate being'secured to member 26 by means of pins 27. 28 indicates a handle portion which as shown in Fig. 2 is bifurcated at its outer end and thus straddles the strap portions when the device is placed upon a container to which the strap 7 the tool has been manipulated a number of times to tighten a strap around a bale, since the length of the final ti htening movement required is usually an indeterminate one and it will be understood that, it a pawl and ratchet device is used, the feeding movement can never be less than the space of a ratchet tooth and that all other feeding strokes will be multiples thereof.
I claim:
1. A strap tightening tool comprising: a support for overlapped strap ends and strap tightening means including a rotatable member, a segment slidingly mounted on said rotatable member, and means for imparting a sliding movement to the segment and a rotating movement to the rotatable member.
2. A strap tightening tool comprising: a support for overlapped strap ends and strap tightening means including a rotatable member, a segment slidingly mounted on said rotatable member, and means for imparting an outward sliding movement to the segment when moving the rotatable member in one direction and admitting of an inward sliding movement thereof when moving the rotatable member in the opposite direction.
3. A strap tightening tool comprising: a
support for overlapped strap ends, and strap tightening means including: a rotatable member, a segment slidingly mounted on said rotatable member, rotatable operating means movable independently of the rotatable member at the beginning of its stroke
