S. SPOOR. Portable Summer Grate for Cooking-Stoves.'

IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE SUMMER GRATES F OR COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,907, dated July 30, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN SPOOR, of
Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented an Improved Portable Summer Grate *for' Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification Figure 1 being a top view of the grate; Fig. 2, a front view thereof; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section of the same, looking toward the back, and indicating the position of the grate in the fire-chamber of a cooking-stove.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
My invention consists of a portable or removable grate or fire-pot, A, which is of the proper size and shape to be put in the fire.- chamber of a cooking-stove, and to occupy a part-say one-half-of the length thereof, in order to hold a comparatively small quantity of" charcoal or. other fine fuel, for the purpose of cooking to a limited extent, especially in summer, and not heating the stove in which it "is placed to any considerable degree. The
bottom and front side, at least, of the grate have apertures or slots a a. to admit the air for supporting combustion. At the back side there are notches h h on the upper edge, so as to retain the charcoal and offer at the same time a free passage to the draught back into the top fiue b of the cooking-stove, Fig. 3. The sides and one end may be quite low, or
dispensed with, in cooking-stoves suitably constructed to be adapted to it; but the partition-end a, next to the unoccupied part of the fire-chamber, should be high enough to keep the fuel in place. on the grate to support it at a proper height in the stove fire-chamber. For some stoves these legs are not necessary. At one corner f a damper-plate, g, is hinged to the grate, so arranged that it can be swungaround and close the stove-flue, except directly behind the grate, in order to concentrate the draught through the grate. When not thus swung back the damper can be folded or shut up against one end or side of the grate.
The grate may be provided with a' socket to receive a common lifting-handle for lifting it out of the stove. i
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A portable grate, A, constructed substantially as described, so as to be placed in and adapted to the fire-chamber of a cookingstove, and occupy a portion thereof, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. The damper-plate g, in combination with the grate A, substantially as and for the purpose described.
Specification signed by me this 3d day of May, 1872.
STEPHEN SPOOR. Witnesses:
