APPLICATION FILED JUNE 2B. 1918.

WITNESSES: INVENTOR ATTORNEY HARVEY SUGG, OF LADYSMITH, WISCONSIN.
SUSPENDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1919.
Application filed June 28, 1918. Serial No. 242,365.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY Soon, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Ladysmith, in the county of Rusk and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in suspenders, more particularly to means for attaching the same to trousers or other articles of apparel to be supported thereby.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a novel, simple and cheaply contructed means for attaching suspenders to the garment to be supported, without the employment of buttons.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved suspenders, and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail side elevation of one of the supporting devices. 7
Referring by characters to the drawing, 1 represents a continuous elastic band, reversed midway of its length, forming a pair of suspenders, the ends of said band being looped and adjustably secured in any suitable manner.
For securing the suspenders to the garment to be supported, I provide attaching devices each preferably fashioned from a single piece ofnickel-plated spring wire doubled on itself and twisted to form a permanent attaching loop '2. The free ends of the wire are then flared obliquely with relation to each other to form legs 3, 3, and the end of each leg is bent upwardly thus forming an open loop or hook l. A clip member or sheath 5 is carried by the leg 3 and is adapted for engagement with the free end of the loop 4: to secure the same after its passage through a. garment. The clip may be soldered or otherwise securedto the leg and its function is similar to that of the head of a safety pin.
Suitable eyelets or gromets 6 may be inserted in the garment X at spaced intervals to eliminate tearing of the fabric. However, it will be appreciated that, if desired, the eyelets may be dispensed with and the loop 4 inserted through the garment in the manner of an ordinary safety pin, for which purpose the loop may be pointed.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that a very cheaply and easily constructed garment-supporting device is provided, whereby the same may be readily attached to and detached from the waistband of a air of trousers and that the use of buttons is entirely dispensed with.
While I have shown and described the invention as applicable to suspenders, it is understood that the same may be used in connection with other devices (such as overalls) within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A garment supporting device comprising a member formed with a loop, legs extendin from the loop, the legs bein bent upwardly at their free ends to form liooks, and means carried by each leg for releasably engaging the free end thereof.
2. A garment supporting device comprising an attaching member formed from a single strand of wire, the same being coiled upon itself intermediate of its ends to form a. permanent attaching loop, the free ends of the wire being flared obliquely with relation to each other to form legs, the end of each leg being bent upwardly to form an open loop, and a clip member carried by each leg adapted to engage the free end of the loop.
3. In an article of the class described, a series ofsupporting members each formed from a single strand of wire bent intermediate of its ends and coiled upon itself toform an attaching loop, legs extending from the loop, the ends of the legs being bent upwardly to form hooks, and means carried by the legs for releasably engaging the free ends thereof.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Ladysmith, in the county of Rusk and State of Wisconsin.
HARVEY SUGG.
