Description

F. s. KROENUNG.
ROLLER SCREEN. APPLICATION FILED IAN-4.1918.
1,297,365. Patgnted Mar. 18,1919.
INVENTOH WITNESSES V: 7- q. a a o a .1 ATTORNEY FRANCIS s. KROEINUNG, on ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
. ROLLER-SCREEN.
Application filed January 4, 1918.
To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, FRANCIS S. KROENUNG, a citizen of the'United States, residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Screens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window screens and more particularly to a roller window screen, the primary object being to provide a screen that may be employed on a window 2 and operated in a manner similar to the operation of the ordinary window shade.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a roller window screen having means for causing the screen to be drawn upwardlywhen it is released from locked closed position and which may be held in the desired position after being opened.
A further object of the invention is to provide a roller screen of this character having releasably arranged locking devices adapted to be readily operated by the user so that the screens may be opened or closed and held in the desired position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which consists of comparatively few parts, 'is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which i I Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention constructed to be mounted upon an ordinary window casing, showing parts broken away.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section taken on the line 22 of Flg. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. I
Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the referred form of my invention, in which l1ke numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the window casing A is constructed in the usual manner and each side stile is provided with a standard 1 which is grooved as indicated at 2 for the reception of the marginal edges of the window screen 3. The upper end of the support carries 2. cas- Specification of Letters Patent.
. stiles A and this casing is provided with fastening elements 5, which may be driven in the woodwork for supporting the casing or may consist of fastening screws shown to advantage in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Centrally mounted within the casing is a spring roller 6 which is of the type commonly employed for rollercurtain shades and wound upon the roller is the wire screen which is of the usual wire mesh of foraminous material. As stated, themarginal edges of the screen slide in the grooves 2 and 'in order that the screen may be extended from the casing, I have provided the latter-with an elongated slot 7 from which the screen is led down wardly at the front of the window while the lower marginal edge of the screen is provided with oppositely arranged plates 8 between the proximate surfaces of which the lower end of the screen is clamped. Mounted in each end of the outermost of these plates is a sliding locking bolt 9 the free end of which carries a roller 10 adapted to be received in a depression 11 arranged in the lower end ofeach support 1 in the marginal edge of the same adjacent the grooves 2 as clearly shown in Fig.3 of the drawing. These sliding locking bolts are mounted in "convenient recesses which also receive comjected laterally through slots whereby they may be gripped by the operator for withdrawing the locking bolts when the screen is to be. opened. A series of the depressions 11 may be arranged in the marginal edges of the support-so that the screen may be opened to the desired-distance and two of these recesses are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 as indicated at 11'. a
By virtue of the arrangement of the two supports 1 attached to the window stiles it will be obvious that a perfectly tight engagement of the screen with the window casing is obtained which will prevent the entrance of insects and at the same time permit easy sliding movement of the screen when it is to be raised or lowered. The entire device may be readily demounted by removing-the support from the window casing and removing the casing 24 from the 'top of the "window frame.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable device has been provided the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes may be made in the minor details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim.
A window screen comprising upright supporting members attachedto the window casing and each provided with a longitudinal groove adapted to receive the window screen, the edge of each support between the said groove and the front face of the support being provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced depressions, a clamp plate fixed to the lower edge of the screen at each side thereof, and provided with a sliding locking bolt carrying a roller adapted for reception in any one of the corresponding depressions in the adjacent upright support, whereby the said screen may be held in adjusted position, the said locking bolt being spring pressed to urge the-said rollers into the depression.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS S. KROEN'UNG.
