Be it known thatlf, CHARLES J. MARTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri,
have invented a new and useful Driving Mechanism, ofv which the following is a| specification.
This invention relates to improvements in driving mechanisms and more specifically to a. driving mechanism which has particular adaptability for -driving washing machines and associated coperating mechanisms for operating upon the work in the various procwringing, rinsing and rewringing.
, An object of the invention is to provide a4 driving mechanism actuated from a single source of power which will-be simple and durable in construction and adapted in its specific embodiment for operating upbn the clothes in the process of cleansing the same and for Operating the wringer mechanism associated and coperating with the wash-l ing machine. l
Another ob] ect Of the in .'ention is to provide a driving device for impartingvertical reciprocating motion to a vertical sha-ft andthe mechanism controlled thereby at reduced speed from a singledrive shaft, associated with mechanism for driving a pair of transverse shafts from an upright shaft, with 'speed-controlling connections between said main drive shaft, whereby the mechanisms will be' operated at required speeds, either concurrently orv separately and independently. as desired.

in order to provide a platform for snp- -porting a tub or other container, transverse slats are mounted in the frame member and-are preferably bolted or otherwise secured to the side members 2in-the manner clearly-illustrated in Figs. 3 and i of the drawings. The slats 6 are mounted in substantially one-half of the framev so that the remaining section thereof is open and free to receive va removable support comprising, in the embodiment shown, a tub 7 of a Wash ing machine. The washing machine mechanism as I have illustrated it includes the tub 7, winch yis provided with a hinged'cover 28. A tubular standard 29 is supported within the tub in an upright position substantially in the centerthereof, said standard being bolted or 'otherwise secured to the bottom of the tub7 `in the manner clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 ,of the drawings. An agitator-slnttt 30 is slidably mounted within the standard 29 and is .of a le-inglrtl'i` suiicicnt so that it eX- tends above the upper end thereof and below the lower end of the standard thrmigh an opening in the bottom wall-ot" the tub.
The mechanism for operating upon the clothes contained in the tub maybe of any suitable design or construction. As l have shown it,vit includes .a hub-member 31 in the form of a hollow cylinder from the lower end ot' which extends obliquely-inclined legs 32 which. support at their lower ends an a'nnular plate The interior diameter of the hub-member 31 is such that when in position it will tit over the upper end of the Vstandard Q9, so that when the shaft 30 is reciprocated the agitator-cement will be .held in proper adjustment and guided in its reciprocating movement` so that it may move in an up and down path, true t'o its aXis.
A hood or pounder-34, which is conical in form, is bolted to the'plate 33, there being a horizont-all)7 adjusted plate 35 extending over the apex of the hood or pounder, the parts being connected as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of thel drawings.
lt will be noted that this construction provides a guide-way or support in which the agitator-shaft is slidable, and that lthe shaft will be 'held in true alinement as it is reciprocated up and down by the hub-member fittin over the upper end ofv the support; YWhilel have described a particular form of mechanism for operating upon the clothes,l it will of coursebe lunderstood that the design ofthe construction may be changed and that the present invention contemplates only Athe provision of a suitable support rigidly vmounted upon the removable support, in the form of a tub, in which the reciprocating shaft for actuating the mechanism for operating upon the lclothes is mounted.

The driving mechanism for actuating the mechanism for operating upon the work sup-l ported by the'tub and actuating the'I associated and cooperating wringen-mechanism, comprises a driven-shaft 36 journaled in hangers 37 and 38 which `depend andare secured to a portion of the portable frame work or support, and as illustrated are secured to the under .face of the inner ones of the cross-members 6.
