CASTING 0F REINFORCED-CONCRETE VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application filed February 5, 1918. Serial No. 215,550.
.crete Vessels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as w ll en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to the casting of reinforced concrete vessels and the like of the kind which are cast on an interior mold or sheeting in an inverted position and the invention has for its object a process which permits the ships deck to be cast in one operation with the rest of the ships hull, the centering or framework carrying the interior sheeting being supported on the ground or bottom slab at a certain distance from the same by means of suitable distance pieces.
By means of this arrangement it is possible to put all reinforcements for deck and ship hull in place before the casting, whereby the weak joints between deck and sldes V are avoided.
The bottom slab 0r floor on which the ship is cast at the same time forms the outside sheeting for the deck, and on this bottom slab is placed a number of small blocks or supporting pieces for carrying the centering or frame-work for the interior sheeting, on which the hull is cast. The said blocks or supporting pieces may be manufactured of wood and taken away after the hull is finished, or they may consist of stone or concrete or the like and be adapted to form a permanent part of the deck structure. In the latter case the said blocks may be given such a form as to obtain a good hold in the casting.
On the drawing: Figure 1 is a partial longitudinal section of an arrangement according to the invention and Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same.
The casting takes place as usual on a supporting slab l of wood or similar material, which also forms the outside sheeting for the casting of deck 2. On said supporting slab is placed blocks or bricks 3, the height of which is equal to the thickness of the deck and said blocks or bricks support the centering or framework carrying the inner mold sheetings, on which the hull is cast. The lower boards 4 of the centering structure form sheeting for the casting of deck ribs and the like.
The reinforcement is placed continuously for hull and deck, and the casting of the whole ship is performed in one operation. When two or more decks are to be cast the same arrangement may be used, and this is also the case, if the ship is to be constructed with a double bottom as indicated on Fig. 2. On the lower sheeting 5 for the interior bottom is then placed blocks or bricks 6 carrying the centering and sheeting for the exterior bottom.
Claims:
1. A framing for the casting of a concrete ship having a top deck and transverse strengthening ribs formed in one piece with the sides and bottom, said framing comprising, a' base on which the deck is cast, a plurality of spacing blocks corresponding to the thickness of the deck mounted on the base,
7 bedding blocks in the deck material that have a configuration capable of permanently uniting therewith, said blocks having a height substantially the thickness of the In testimony that I claim the foregoing as deck, mounting transverse frames on said my invention, I have signed my name in blocks, casting ribs on the deck between the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
frames of a thickness greater than the thick- HARALD ALFSEN. 5 ness of the deck and casting the sides and Witnesses:
