To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs A. BRoeAn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State. of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Inserting Fastenings, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference charactors on the drawings indicating likeparts in the several figures.
The present invention relates to machines for inserting fastenings into boots and shoes, and more particularly to tllGWOlk gages used in such machines for determining the distance of the line of operation of the fastening inserting mechanism from the edge of the work, the fastenings being successively inserted to form a row or rows parallel to the edge of the work.
In machines for inserting fastenings, the driving means usually performs its driving function in a predetermined path and the work into which the fastenings are driven is moved relative thereto to properly posi- 'tion the fastenings. To guide the work in its movement such machines are usually provided with a gage against which the work is held and along which it is moved after each fastening inserting operation. Where ornamental or wear resisting qualities are to be imparted tothe heels of boots and shoes, fastenings are sometimes inserted intwo or more rows parallel to the contour edge of the heel in desired spaced relation. This is effected bya gage against which the exterior or contoursurface of the heel is held and about which, as a center the shoe" is swung. It is desirable, in some classes of work, to continue the row or rows of fastenings across the heel parallel .to the heel breast edge at a predetermined spaced distance therefrom, but owing to the construc tion of such machines and the relation of the gage thereto no gaging surface is provided which will determine the spacing of the fasteiiings from the breast edge of the heel. Moreover, in order to permit the shoe to be swung into the position required for inserting the fastenings across the heel parallel to the heel breast edge, the edge gage must first be moved to inoperative position.

In Fig. 2 and by fulllines in Fig. 3, the position of the swinging carrier 15 is shown such that the contour edge gaging surface16 is in gaging relation with the inserting mechanism and by moving the heel a over the surface 16 a row of fastenings may be insert ed in the heel parallel to the contour edge thereof. When a'row of fastenings is to be inserted across the heel parallel to the breast edge, the carrier 15 is moved from the full line position, Fig; 3, to the lower dotted line position, to bring the gaging surface 17 into operative relation with the inserting mechanism and simultaneously with such movement the gaging surface 16 ismoved frontward, in this instanceof the invention, so that the breast of the heel may be placed against the gaging surface 17 ,substantially as indicated by the dotted linesa, Fig. 3. It will be apparent that when inserting fastenings parallel to the contour edge, the exterior surface of the heel will, this instance of the invention, be pressed backwardly against the gaging surface 16, and when inserting fastenings parallel to the heel breast edge, the heel breast will be pulled frontwardly against the'gaging surface 17 .Itbecomes. desirable therefore, to provide stops to hold the carrier 15 in either position. In the pres ent instance, the 'oarrier15 is extended be yond the pivotal connectionl with the arm 9 and is provided with a handle 18 by which the carrier may be moved to place one of the gagingsurfaces in and the other out of gaging position. I i r r L g The arm 9 is providedwith a projecting portion 19 in which is formed a suitable re cess or opening 20 to beengaged by a stop pin 21 attached to a hand-piece pivoted at 22 on the handle 18. The stop pin 21 is guided in lugs 23 projecting from thehandle 18, and a spring 24 normally acts to force the pin 21 into locking engagement with th open-= ing 20 to hold the carrier 15 with the heel contour edge gaging surface 16in gaging position and the heel breast edge gaging surface 17 out of gaging position;
By tripping the pin 21 from the opening 20 the carrier 15 may be moved to throw the gaging surface 17 frontwardly'into gaging position and-the gaging surface. 16 out of gaging position. The distance of the row of fastenin gs from the contour and breast edges of the heel may be varied by means of the handle 111', through manipulation of which the arm 9 and perforce the gages 16 and 17 may be moved to alter the relation of the gages'and driver 3. By moving the handle 111 in appropriate directions two rows of fasteners may be inserted parallel to the contour and breast edges of the heel.
After a row of fastenings has been inserted, and located parallel to the contour and breast edges of the heel by'the alternate movement of the contour edge and breast V edge gaging meansinto gaging position, a
substantially continuous line of fastenings will extend about the contour and along the breast edges and in some cases this may be sufficient. In other cases, however, it is desirable to place two rows of fastenings in spaced relation parallel to the contour edge of the heel and a single row across the heel parallel to the heel breast edge. To efi'ect this the carrier 15, in the present instance of the invention, is permitted to have a furtherbackward movement than that defined by the opening 20 and pin 21, and asuitable stop is provided to locate the full back position of the carrier and consequently the distance of the second row of fastenings from the first row. 1 V.

In Figs. 4, 5 and-6 a modified form of the invention is shown, wherein the heel contour edge gaging means and the heel breast edge gaging means are formed independently and are moved, the one into and the other V -&
gage 37 and the breast edge gage 38. .The gage 37 is secured to the arm 39 which C017, responds'to the arm 9 oi-the preferred form of the invention already described, except that the arm 39 is formed as a spring normally actingto maintain the contour edge gage 37 seated in the rece'ss36 with its lowersurface in the plane of the bearing plate 3 1. The breast edge gage 38 is mounted upon'the spring arm 40 secured at one end to the footplate: or member 32, the construction being such that the springarms 39 and 10 normally act to'maintain the gages 37 and 39 within their respective recesses-36. A: slide ilis mounted in a guideway-ifZformed in the bearing plate 34: and is provided with acam piece 43 to act upon and-project one or the other of the gages 37 and 38',- according to the position of the cam piece.v A finger piece 44 is connected to the slide-41, whereby it may be appropriately moved in the guideway 12, the construction and relation of parts being such that when the slide 41 is moved in one direction, it will project the contour edge gage 37, from its recess into gaging position and permit thebreast edge gage to remain within its recess 36- out of the 7 way. When a row of fastenings is to be inserted-parallel to the breastedge of the heel, the slide 41 is moved to the position indicated by Fig. 5, whereupon the breastedge gage 38 is projected or moved into operative position by the cam 43, and the contour edge gage 37 is at the same time permitted to move to inoperative position within the recess 36 of the bearing plate. The breast of the heel may then be placed against the 7 breast edge gage 38, as represented by dotted lines in Fig. 6, and moved along the gage as the fastenings are successively inserted into the h'eelparallcl'to the breast edge bythe inserting mechanism.
Claims:
1. In a machine of the character described, the combination of heel contour edge gaging means for determining the relation of a row of fastenings with respect to the con tour edge of a heel, heel breast edge gaging means for determining the relation of a row of fastenmgs with respect'to the breast edge selectively placing either of means in gagingposition.

In a machine of the character de; scribed, the combination of an arm, heel contour edge gaging means and heel breast edge gaging means carried by said arm, and along which the heel contour and heel breast are respectively movable to permit a row of fastenings to be inserted in the heel parallel to the contour and breast edges, means for selectively placing either of said gages in gaging position, and means for shifting the arm with either of said gages in gaging position to permit a plurality of rows of fastenings to be inserted parallel to either the contour or breast edge of the heel.
9. In a machine of the character described, the combination of two gages, over one of which the contour portion of a heel is movable for determining the relation of a row of fastenings with respect to the contour edge of the heel and over the other of which the heel breast is movable for determining the relation of a row of fastenings with respect'to the breast edge of the heel, stops for determining the gaging position of both of said gages, and means acting to simultaneously move one gage into gaging po sition and the otherout of gaging posltion that the work may be freely moved with either gage in gaging position.

a contour edge gage and a breast edge gage connected to said carrier, a stop for limiting movement of the carrier with the contour edge gage in position to permit a row of fastenings to be inserted parallel to the 'con-' tour edge of the heel and with the breast edge gage out of gaging position, a second stop for limiting movement of the carrier and gages to a position for the insertionof a second row of fasteningsparallel to the contour edge of the heel, and a third stop for limiting movement of the carrier to a position with the breast edge gage in gaging position and the contour edge gage out of gaging position.
12. A gage for guiding the heel of a boot or shoe for the'insertion of fastenings in a row parallel to the contour and breast edges, comprising, in combination, a carrier, a contour edge gage and a breast edge gage connected to said carrier, 2. stop for limiting movement of the carrier with the contour edge gage in position to permit a row of fastenings to be inserted parallel to the contour edge of the heel and with the breast edge gage out of gaging position, a second stop for limiting movement of the carrier and gages to a position for the insertion of a second row of fasteningsparallel to the contour edge of the heel, and a third stop for limiting movement of the'carrier to a posi tion with the breast edge gage in gaging p0' 'be' inserted parallel to the edges of the heel.
13. A gage for guiding a boot or shoe for "the insertion of fastenings, comprising, in
combination, a swinging carrier having oppositely extending portions constituting two gaging surfaces against either of which the workmay be held to determine the position of the fastenings to be driven, means for pivotally supporting the carrier at a point oflset laterally from the gaging por tions for movement 'to'place one of said gages, in and the other out. of gaging' position, and stops for 'limitingtheswinging movement of the carrier. 23. In a gage of the character described, a T-shaped member having gaging surfaces adjacent to the ends of the shorter arm of said member, and means for supporting said member for bodily adjustment of said shorter arm to bring either of said gaging surfaces into operative position.

In a gage of the character described, a T-shaped member having opposed gaging surfaces at the ends of the shorter arm of said member, means for supporting said member for bodily adjustment of said shorter arm to bring either of said gaging surfaces into operative position and means for moving said member bodily through predetermined limits of movement.
