DRILL-FULLER;
To all whom it'may concern: Be it known that I, WILLIS A. 000K, a citizen of the United States, residing at Republi in the county of Ferry'and State of Washington, have invented'new and useful Improvements in Drill-Pullers, of which the following 'is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved drill pulling device and resides in the construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forth in the following-specification and pointed out with'p articularity in what is claimed.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating the application of the improvement.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the grip block.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the puller arm or member.
It is the object of the present invention to dispense with the hand method of pulling drills, to save the time and labor exerted thereby and to provide an extremely simple but thoroughly eflicient manner whereby a stuck drill may be removed in an easy and efiicient manner at a small amount of time and with a comparatively slight amount of labor upon the part of the miner.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings the numeral 5 designates a drill bit which is supposed to have been stuck in a hole. The numeral 6 designates a Stoper drilling machine actuated by compressed air power. When the bit 5 is stuck the chuck 7 of the drilling machine 6 is actuated to release the bit 5. A second bit 8 is then arranged in the chuck of the drilling machine and is actuated by the drilling machine so that the same is received in a comparatively shallow hole in the stratum mine in which the bit 5 is stuck. The bit 8 is not an addition to the miners kit but may be one of the bits usually used. The bit 8 is comparatively short, say about two feet long and is bored in the stratum 9 only a short distance away from the bit 5. When the bit 8, which provides the fulcrum member for the improvement, is inserted,-
say about six inches in the stratum 9 the drilling machine 6 is removed therefrom and is positioned a slight distance to one side of the fulcrum bit 8, the drilling machine 6, the fulcrum 8 and the stuck bit 5 being arranged in parallelism. In the drilling machine 6 is now secured a pulling arm 10, the same including a shank 11 corre- Specification of Letters Patent.

sponding in'shape to the bits so that the same may be properly engaged by the chuck The'shank 11, at the outer end thereof is provided with-an offset portion forming with the same what I will term a head and which is designated by the numeral 12. Thishead, at the outer end thereof is pro- .vided with an opening'13 of a shape corresponding to the cross 'sectionalshapeof either of thebits 5 or 8 sojthat the bit 8 will freely slide through the opening 13, more properly speaking the member 11 will side over the fulcrumbit 8 when the drilling machine is operated, and will be guided by the said fulcrum member 8. 7
The head 12, at a suitable distance inward of the opening 13 is provided with an additional opening 14 through which passes one of the end links of a chain 15, the said end link being engaged by a suitable pin 16 that is disposed transversely of the slot 14 resting upon the outer face of the head 12.
On the lower end of the fulcrum bit 8 is arranged a socket 17 formed on one end of a slotted member, and between the arms 18 provided by the slot in the said member is pivotally secured, as at 19 a wheel 20. Around this wheel the chain 15 is trained, and the free end of the chain is passed through an opening 21 in one end of what I will term a grip block 22. The referred to end of the chain 15 is engaged by a pin 23, passing through the said link and straddling the opening 21. The grip block is provided with an opening 24 providing centrally communicating right angular passages, corresponding to the cross sectional shape of the bit 5, through which openings the said bit 5 is passed. The block 22 is tilted or canted so that the walls of the opening 24. will firmly grip the surfaces of the bit 5. The valve 25 of the Stoper drilling machine is turned to admit air through the flexible tube 26 for actuating the mechanism to move the arm 10 outwardly toward the stratum. 9. This, of course, pulls on the chain 15, causing the same to travel around the wheel 20, causing the grip block to pull upon the bit 5 to withdraw the same from its opening in the stratum. It will be apparent that the grip block 22 may be adjusted to engage at different points on. the bit 5, and from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings, the simplicity chine", an arm in said machine designed to be moved outwardly therefrom, said arml having a head, a fulcrum member receiving the head and providing av-guide-for the arm, a wheel =on thefulcrum member, a grip block engaging the drill anda flexible ele ment secured to the blockyguided around the Wheel and connected to the head ofthe arm. a
2. Inga device for the purpose setiorth, the combination with adrilling machine, of a fulcrum member adapted to beremov-ably secured between a bit to bepul led and the drillingmachine,.-'an arm movable through the drilling machine having an. angle portion providing a head, and said-headhaving an opening-receiving the fulcrum member, a
Having thus described the invention, What Wheel removably connected With fulcrum member, a grip block having an opening therein receiving thebit and designed to be canted-to 'frictionally contact with the bit, and a flexible element secured to the head of the arm and to the grip block and trained around the Wheel.
3. Ina means for pulling a stuck bit from a hole, the combination With a drilling machine, an arm having an angle end and a shank received in the machine and longitudinally movable thereby, saidarm having an opening, a fulcrum member received in this opening, a Wheel on said fulcrum member, a grip block having an opening thereon designed to receive'the bit to bepulled, and to be canted to frictionally engage with said bit, and a flexible element associated With said grip block trained around the Wheel of the fulcrum member and connected with the arm. 7
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
