citizen of Russia, and a resident of the city of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery anchState of Ohio, have invented a new and useful li'n jn'oveimmt in (lombined Lifting- Jacks and Hoists, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined lifting jack and hoist and has particular reference to the portable, hand or power operated mechanisms, suitable for carrying in automobiles, trucks and the like.
My in vcntion has for its object to provide a mechanism of the character, a ove indicated, which is simple in form and etlicient in operation, the same apparatus being suitable for raising the load above the ground by jacking it up, for moving the load horizontally and for hoisting it by means of a rope or chain.
There have been employed heretofore, separate apparatus for each of the above mentioned operations, lifting acks being of such coi'istruction, as to render them unsuitable for hoisting work.
I have produced a n'icchanisn'i which utilizes features of ordinary lifting jacks, and, in addition, has parts, which in combination with the aforesaid features, enable the mechanism to be used as a hoist, winch or capstan.

The mechanism comprises a stem 37, threaded on the outside and hollow inside. This stein has an enlarged portion constituting a jack head 45, adapted to engage the load, such as an axle of a vehicle, when raising same from the ground.
The stem 37 slides freely in the stand 4-6- having the foot, 17, which is sutliciently large to provide a safe resting base, when mecl'ianism is used as jack.
The stand 46 has a slot in the upper part, Where a gear Wheel 38 is located. This gear has a. thread on inside, engaging the thread on the stem 37. Therefore, by rotating gear 38, the stem 37 can he raised or lowered.
The stem itself, prevented from rotating v through. friction with the load engaged.

Part of this yoke forms a hearing 40 for an auxiliary shaft all. On this is .mounted another gear wheel 39, engaging gear 38 with any desired ratio. A handle 4-2 may be used to rotate the gears in either direction.

In this way my mechanism can he used as an ordinary lifting jack, such as aroused for automobiles, etc.
My mechanism has. however, additional attachments, enabling it to be used as a hoist. These attachments consist in two of one wayclamps 44: on the stem 45 and 4-3 on the post 47. These clamps made to en' gage the rhpe 51., Each clamp consists of two oppositely located sections 44 on pivots 53. The engaging surface of a section is made eccentric with the pivot, so that friction with. the rope will tighten the grip or hold on this rope, when moved in one direction, and completely release, when moved in the other. Yoke 49 may be swung in direction of lift, and another rope with hook 52 will complete the hoisting mechanism.
hen operating as a hoist, the free end of the rope 51 should be attached to the object to be moved (such as an automobile, when it is ditched), and the free end of rope 5s to some stationary object (such as a. tree, etc), or vice versa. The stem should be first moved out of the stand 46 as far as it will go without losing engagement with the gear 38. Rotation of the gears in theproper direction will cause the stem to move inside of the stand. The clamps 44 will grip the rope and will pull it with the stem. The hook end of the rope can be pulled easily through clamps 43. Vil-hen the stem is completely moved in, the gears must. be rotated in the other direction, until the stem is moved out again. During the raising of stem the pull on the rope will cause the clamps 4:3 to grip the rope, thus supporting the load stationary in its position, and then, clamps 44: will slide freely along the rope.
Therefore, the action of my mechanism is intermittent, but the total amount of lift, is limited only by the length of the rope both, as a hoist and as a lifting jack, being compact and simple to manufacture, that, being used as a hoist,,it can more objects through large horizontal or vertical distances, requiring only one man for all its operations.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the character described,
the combination, with a stand, a threaded stem movable in said stand and having a head adapted to engage the load when said device is employed for lifting, a threaded gear adapted to actuate the stem and pawls secured in said head and movable with said stem and adapted to engage the load when said device is employed for pulling.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination, With a stand, a hollow threaded stem movable in said stand and having a head adapted to engage the load when said device is employed for lifting, a gear having a threaded portion adapted to actuate the stem and pawls secured in said head movable with said. stem and adapted to grip a rope extending through said stem when said device is employed for pulling.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a stand, a hollow threaded stem movable in said stand and having a head adapted to engage the load when said device is employed for lifting, a gear adapted to actuate said stem and a set of opposite pawls attached to said head and movable with said stem and adapted to grip a rope extending through said stem when said device is employed for pulling.

In a device of the character described, the combination, With a stand, a threaded stem movable in said stand and having a head adapted to engage the load when said device is employed for lifting, a gear having .a threaded bearing adapted to actuate said stem .awls secured in said head and movable with said stem and other pawls fixed in said stand adapted when said device is employed for pulling to alternately grip a rope extending therebetween as said stem is raised orlowered in said stand.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a stand, a threaded stem movable in said stand and having a head adapted to engage the load when said device is employed for-lifting, a gear adapted to actuate said stem axially, pawls secured in said head and movable with said stem and adapted when said. device is employed for pulling to grip a rope when said stem is moved in one direction and other pawls fixed in said stand adapted to grip the rope when the stem is moved in the opposite direction.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a stand, a threaded stem movable in said stand and having a head adapted to engage the load When said device is employed for lifting, a gear adapted to actuate said stem, devices secured in said head and movable with said stem and adapted to grip a rope, and a yoke adapted to support one end of said stand when said device is employed for pulling.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination, with a hollow stand, and a lifting stem passing through said stand and having a jack head thereon, said stem being threaded on its outside and having a passage longitudinally tl'ierethrough, means coiiperating with the threads of said stem to move the stem and jack head longitudinally relative to the stand, a clamp carried by said jack head and constructed to grip and move a rope passing through said stem, a second clamp'carried by the foot of the stem and serving to grip and hold the rope and a yoke pivotally mounted on the stand and to which a second rope may be attached.
