STANISLAW MARCINIAK, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
STONE-RAKIN G MACHINE.
meeste.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed Teb. is, raie.
Application led January 14, 1918. Serial No. 211,791.
To @ZZ lwhom t may concern:
Be it known that l, STANisLAw MARGIN- raii, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stone-Baking Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a ready means for pickingi up stones in large quantities for transportation, the device being operable while being forwardly propelled over the ground.
A further object of the device is the provision of a vehicle adapted for gathering stones from the ground over which the device travels so that large areas may be quickly covered in picking the stones therefrom, the vehicle being capable of carrying large quantities of stones for delivery at a distance.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a stone picker in the nature of a vehicle that is strong and durable in construction, easy and inexpensive to manufacture and capable of performing the work of a large number of laborers in an expeditious manner.
In the drawings forming a part of this application, in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the device taken transversely through the stone receiver in its lilling position,
Fig. 4 is a similar view with the receiver in its dumping position.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a portion of the receiver and rake member.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 3 including a showing of the adjacent portion of the vehicle body, and
Fig. 7 is a detail view of a portion of the receiver adjusting mechanism.
My invention being designed for picking up stones from the ground and transferring them to desirable locations, the same broadly consists of a vehicle 1() having a substantially U-shaped frame 11 arranged with a horizontal axle 12 at its rear end with ground wheels 13 positioned thereon and with a single forwardly positioned wheel 1/1 adapted for turning in steering the device when drawn forwardly by any suitable draft means attached to a yoke 15 positioned above the steering wheel 14.
Forwardly extending arms 16 are journaled at their rear ends upon the aXle 12 while a stone receiver or drum 17 is journaled to the forward ends of the said arms by means of trunnions 18 secured to the said arms with bosses 19 at the ends of the drum journaled upon said trunnions. The drum 17 is arranged with a longitudinal opening or mouth 20 at one side thereof adapted for positioning at the top of the drum as shown in Fig. 3 during the filling operation, the drum being readily inverted as shown in Fig. l for dumping the stones from the drum 17.
A rake 21 is also journaled upon the trunnions 18, the said rake being in the form of two rectangular frames 22 perpendicularly arranged with their end members 23 centrally journaled upon the trunnions 18 and with the connecting sides 24 of the frames provided with a plurality of substantially S-sliaped hooks 25 slightly spaced apart and extending in the same direction.
A gear 26 is arrangedl adjacent each end of the aXle 12 within the frame l1 and inwardly of the arms 16 in constant mesh with similar gears 27 secured to the trunnions 18 and rake 21 whereby the rake is revolved in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1 of the drawings during the forward travel of the vehicle 10.
It will be seen that the driver positioned upon the seat 34 may control the forward movement of the vehicle 1l by guiding the horses, or other draft means attached to the yoke 15 and by operating the levers 33 may regulate the position of the hooks 25 with respect to the ground 4G over which the vehicle 10 is traveling. Any stones which cla Civ
are positioned upon the ground 40 will be engaged by one or more of the four operative side portions of the rake 2l and the stones picked up by the same and deposited into the open mouth 2O at the Vtop of the receiver 17. It will be understood that the receiver 17 normally maintains its upright position by reason of its own weight and any stones which have been deposited therein and when the drinn is'filled with stones, the saine may be inverted in emptying the stones upon the ground beneath the vehicle.
A body or trailer 41 is arranged with its forward end journaled upon the vehicle axle .l2 and provided with rear ground wheels 42, the said body having an open top and provided with spaced teeth 423 in its concaved forward end @i positioned rearwardly of the drinn 17. A set screw 45 is arranged for each of the hooks for detachably mounting the hooks upon the sides 24 of the rake. The rake hooks or teeth 25 pass through the openings between the teeth 43 of the forward body 41 and may deposit any stones int-o the said body which remain upon the hooks after passing the drinn mouth 20,
`while it will be understood that the teeth of the said body wall 4l serve to clean the hooks 25 from the stone during the travel of the hooks between the said teeth. The forward travel ofthe vehicle l0 operates the rake 2l for gathering the stones upon the ground and elevating the saine into the drum 17 and into the body 4l, the concaved formation of the teeth insuring a release of all of the stones from the rack 2l which have passed the drinn and the deposit of such stones into the body 41.
A large track of stony ground may be quickly cleared of all stones by means of neet-,eis
this device, only one person being required for operating the same and such person postioned upon the seat 34 having complete control of the device.
`What I claim as new is l. A stone picker comprising a vehicle having ground wheels secured to an axle, a rotatable rake operatively geared to said aXle and provided with rows of hooked teeth spaced apart and projecting' in the saine direction, manually operable vertical adjusting means for said rake, and a body for the vehicle rearwardly of the rake having a concaved forward end provided with notches forming teeth adapted for the clearing passage of the rake teeth therebetween dui-ino' the operation of the device upon the forward movement of the vehicle.
2. A device of the class described coinprising avehicle frame, a rear axle journaled in said frame, groundwheels secured to said axle, yforwardly' projecting arins journaled upon said axle, a` rotatable rake comprising rectangular `frames journaled upon the free ends of the arms andprovided with rows of spaced engaging hooks, gear connections between said rake and said axlea hand levers operativelyY connected to said arms to vertically adjust said rake, a trailer body pivotally suspended from said axle rearwardly ofthe rake and provided with a notched concaved forward end forming spaced clearing teethfor said rake hooks, said hooks having ,a path of movement between said teeth diiring the rotation of the rake when the device is operated, and rear ground wheels for said body.
'In testimony whereof l affix my signature.
