'fr J. f iNvENToR Jaffa/ grill/na',
BY mf/1%@ ATTORNEY J CHN GIRIUNAS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CIGAR-LIGI-ITER.
Application led March 23, 1918.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GRIUNAS, a citizen of Russia, resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usef-ul Improvements in Cigar-Lighters, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in mea-ns for lighting cigars, cigarettes, and the like, having as its special object the provision of a casing in which matches are contained and into which the end of a cigar may be entered, so that when the matches are ignited the flame is communicated directly to the cigar and is prevented from being extinguished by blasts of air, wind or rain.
Another object is to provide means, combined with the casing, whereby upon the turning of a single knob a single match is caused to be ignited and moved into position to communicate with the entered end of a cigar.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a lighter made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view, taken in a vertical plane through the same.
Fig. 3 is another vertical View taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and,
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4 -4 of Fig. 2.
Throughout the several views the numeral 10, indicates the upper portion of a rectangular metallic structure, to which is connected by means of a hinge 11, the lower portion l2 of the structure, formed with the indentation 14, engageable with a spring detent 15, fixed to the main or upper portion of the casing, the detent being operable by an extending knob 16, when it is desired to disengage the lower part.
Rotatably mounted within the main casing 10, is a spindle 18, having in its extending end 19, a cross-bar 20, by means of which the spindle may be rotated, and which is held in position by a xed collar 21. The opposite end of the spindle has secured upon it a ratchet disk 23, engageable with a spring detent 24e, rigidly secured within the interior of the upper part of the casing.
Mounted centrally on the spindle 18, are

arms 25, adapted to receive the tapered inner ends or Shanks of matches 28, and hold the same therein, the heads 29 extending radially outward.
A U shaped flat spring 30 is fastened to the lower, inner wall of the casing element 12, and has attached to it a plate 3l, having rentrantly turned edges 32, between which is slidably engaged a rectangular plate 33, having on its upper surface a sheet of abrading material 35, as sand paper, or the like, and which is obviously pressed upward due to the spring effect of the element 30.
Thus upon actuating the extending bar 20, the adjacent match is brought into intimate contact with the abrading surface to ignite the match and upon further rotation of the spindle, moves the match upward into a horizontal position, adjacent to an opening 38, formed through the front wall of the casing 10, and which may be covered, when not in use, by a pivoted plate 39, while the gases and smoke from the match escape through the opening 40.
In operation, matches having been supplied to the holders or arms 25, which is readily accomplished by releasing the lower element 12, and the abrading surface being in operating position, the lower element l2 is pressed upward, so as to be maintained in position by the detent 15, and upon turning the spindle 18 by its extending end, one of the matches is caused to be ignited, brought into position adjacent to the opening 38,-the cover 39 of which being raised,-the cigar inserted and ignited in an ordinary manner.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
1. In a cigar lighter, the combination with a rectangular metallic casing, a cover portion hingedly engaged therewith, means for holding said cover when in an engaged position, means whereby said cover may be released, a spindle journaled to rotate transversely, centrally of said casing, means for rotating said spindle, a. plurality of match carriers rigidly engaged with said spindle, a ratchet fixed upon said spindle, means for holding said ratchet and spindle in an adjusted position, a spring abrader adapted to make contact with matches passed thereacross, and means for the entry of a cigar and for the outlet of smoke from said casing.
2. In a cigar lighter, the combination 7ith a rectangular metallic casing formed in two sections, a hinge joining both sections, a spring detent hy which said sections are held in operative relation, means for releasing said spring detent, a covered entrance Whereby a cigar may be introduced into said cas- -ing, a spindle journaled centrally of said casing, means for rotating said spindle, said means extending outward and beyond the Wall of said casing, match carrying arms secured upon said spindle, an ahrader removably engaged with said casing, a spring whereby said abrader is pressed upwardly against the ends of matches as they are moved thereacross, and means for holding said match carrying arms in a relatively fixed position.
ln testimony whereof, I have aiiXed my signature.
JOHN GRUNAS.
