' economize largely in the PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD W. APPLETON, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURE-FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,450, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification of an Improved Method of Manufacturing Picture-Frames, invented by EDWARD W. APPLETON, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
into the proper lengths to constitute .a frame.
This waste I avoid by a symmetrical or similar formation of the moldings as respects their inner and outer edges, and by making each saw-cut form the ends of two moldings instead of one only, as in the ordinary way, so as to important items of material and labor.
General Description.
Figure 1 represents, by face and end view, the parts of an ordinary molding sawn into suitable pieces for a picture-frame by the customary method, the parts A A ,A A being such pieces, and the parts B B B B being the portions wasted. Fig. 2 represents, by face and end view, the parts of a symmetrical molding sawn into suitable pieces for a picture-frame by my method. A rabbet, E, is provided on each rear corner.
It is apparent that each cut, save the end ones, forms at once the ends of two members, a. a, instead of but one, as in the common way, thus saving materially in the labor of preparing these members. It is also apparent that I save the material of the intervening portions B B B" B, wasted in the present method.
Fig. 3 represents, by end views, two' modifications of my symmetrical molding. Fig. 4. represents, by end views, a modification, in which 0 is the outer, and D the inner portion of a compound frame, both of them symmetrical and reversible, (see dotted lines,) the inner portion only being provided with a rabbet, and both being reduced to proper lengths without the creation of waste portions.
By thus compounding the frame of two kinds of strips or moldings, both symmetrical, and the inner one only rabbeted, a great variety of patterns may be employed.
Although here described and especially designed for picture-frames, my improvement is obviously applicable to the frames of lookingglasses and other like objects inclosed in rectangular frames with mitered joints.
Claims.
I claim as new and of my invention- 1. The symmetrical double-rabbeted moldings for picture or other frames, so as to be out without waste, substantially as described.
2. In picture or other frames, the combination of the moldings, consisting of outer portions 0 and inner portions D, both symmetrical, and cut from the original molding without waste, and the inner portion being double rabbeted, as represented, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
EDWARD W. APPLETON.
