LLOYD ID. MYTRS, CF MINNEAPGLIS, MINNESOTA.
Application filed April 6. 1916.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LLOYD D. MYERS, a citizen of lthe vlUnited States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a newf and useful Improvement in Dispensing-,Receptacles, of which the following is a specication.
The primary object of this invention is the production of a dispensing device out of Which the contents may be delivered in measured quantities. Primarily this invention is intended for use for dispensing a predetermined amount. of sugar yfrom a sugar bovvl or canister, although it Will be understood the device can be used for dispensing any powdered or granulated kingredients.
Among the objects of this invention are simplicity of construction, greater eectiveness in use, and the production of a device, which is sanitary and which will prevent Waste.
To these ends my invention comprises the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter' more particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.I Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan, part of the structure being broken away and in section. and Fig. 8 is a partial section of a detail taken on the line X-X of Fig. 1.
In the drawing A indicates a body of a bowl or other receptacle of cylindrical shape upon which is mounted through the employment of a slip joint 2, a cap or top B, also of cylindrical or other shape, said cap being locked on said body by means of a pin 3 on the member A, and a right angle groove or slot 4., in member B in which the pin 3 engages the cap and holds it upon the body until purposely disengaged. The cap B is provided With a handle C, by which the entire device can be manipulated. Located at the top and in one side of the cap B is a cylindrical housing D. in which is rotably mounted a measuring device of cylindrical form E. The cylindrical Wall of the measuring device turns freely but fits closely in the housing and is formed in its periphery with a pocket 5. Which registers With a receiving opening 6 in the cylindrical housing D communicating With the chamber Within the body and cap. The size of the Specification of Letters Patent.
DISPENSING-RECEPTACLE.
Patented lFelo. 11, Serial No. 89,353.
pocket 5 is in accordance With the amount of the ingredients to be measured and delivered through the spout 8 on the housing at each operation of the measuring device, said pocket being adapted to register with said spout and deliver its contents when the measuring device has been rotated a partial revolution. The measuring cylinder is journaled upon a shaft 9 extending axially through the cylindrical housing and secured rigidly in the end Walls 1() thereof. The measuring cylinder E Within the housing is urged into normal position as illustrated in Fig. 1 with the pocket 5 registering with the receiving opening 6, by means of a coil spring 11, one end of which is secured to the shaft 9 and the other end secured to one of the ends 12 of the measuring cylinder E. To rotate the measuring' cylinder in the direction of the arrow indicated in Fig. 1, and cause the pocket to register with the spout 8 and deposit its contents through said spout. a pitman 13 is pivoted by one end to a pin or lug 14 extending from the end 12 of said measuring cylinder and by its other end to a thrust shaft 15, which is slidably i mounted in and extends through the Walls ofthe measuring device and of the cap. The extending end of said thrust shaft is arranged adjacent the handle C, and is formed With a head 16 convenient, so that by pressing inwardly against said head, the measuring cylinder is rotated and released. In this manner the measuring cylinder can be operated when the device is inverted or tilted downwardly to dispense measured quantities of the contents of the receptacle through the spout- 8 as often as desired.
In operating the device. some of the in gredient-s may remain in the spout after the device has been tilted or inverted, and in such event, if the measuring cylinder is then rotated, the ingredients tend to enter between the Walls of the measuring` cylinder and housing, thus causing said cylinder to bind. To avoid this objection, the measuring cylinder is formed with a circumferential passage 17 extending between the spout 8 and the interior of the receptacle when the device is in upright and normal position. thus allowing any ingredients retained in the spout returning freely into the receptacle and not causing the measuring cylinder to bind in the housing. In order to close this return passage and prevent any of the contents of the receptacle escapi e: Y ing outwardly therethrough, a flap valve 18 is pivoted at the junction of the housing and wall of the'cap B, so as to automatically close the passage 17 when the receptacle is tilted or inverted. This flap valve,
aots under gravity and also undei1 the weight of the ingredients in the receptacle. The outer end of the spout is provided with a shutter 19, which also closes automatically when the receptacle is in upright position.
lnaecordance with the patent statutes, l have described the principles oi' operation offmy invention, together with the appa ratus which l' now consider to rrepresent `the best embodiment thereof, but l desire rto yhave it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative, and that the inventionfcan be carried lout by other means and applied to usesother thany those above set forth, within the scope of the following claims.l
VHaving described my invention what l claim as new and kdesire to protect by Letters Patent is l. A dispensing receptacle, comprising aV -container having in its upper end an integral cylindrical measuring housing formed with an inlet entering` said Container and a spout'` outlet, a solid cylindrical measure journaled in said housing having in its periphery a pocket adapted in the normal position of said vmeasure to register with said inlet and inanother position to register with said spout, a coil spring connected fto the aXis of said measure for urging said Vjournaled `in said housing having in its periphery a pocket adapted in the normal position of said measure to register with said" inlet and in another position to register with said spout, said measure having` a return channel in its periphery forming a small passage between said spout and the interior of said container, a Coil spr' Y nested to the axis ot said measure ttor urging said measure iiito normal position, a
handleon said container.v and a push device slidably extending through said' container having a link 'connection with the outer end of said spring to rotate said measure against the tension of said spring from normal into registry-with said spout and arranged within easy reach to depress the same by the handV which grasps said handle.
In testimony whereof, lhave signed my naine to this speeiiieation.
Y LLOYD D. MYERS Copiesv ofV this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing theommissioner of Patents,
