Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
Application filed September 28, 1917. Serial No. 193,*764.
To all "Lu/tom ?It may conccrn:
Be it known that I, ELLIOTT R. RIBBLE, a citizen of the United States, resding at Roanoke, in the County of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cash-Register Lights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cash registers and particularly to means for illuminating the material in the drawer thereof.
The primary object of the invention is to so locate electric bulbs within the drawer that the compartments thereof will be illuminated, provision being made for automatically lighting said bulbs when' the drawer is open and of automatically eXtinguishing the light when the drawer is closed.
The invention further consists of providing th'e partitions by means of which the drawer is divided into separate compartments, with openings, for the reception of electric light bulbs, novel means being utilized for mounting said bulbs within said partitions so as to support them in a manner to illuminate the adjacent compartments.
The invention also consists of the following novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more :fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- F igure 1 is a vertical sectional View through a lower part of the cash register, showing the drawer in a closed position;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of the drawer open;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional View taken transversely through one of the drawer partitions and illustrating the mounting of the lamps in the partitions;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view showing the manner of positioning the lamps so 'as to light four separate compartments; and
Fig. 5 is a plan view oi" a further modified form of the invention, this form showing a separate lamp for each compartment.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the reference character 10 designates a portion of a cash register of the usual or any preferred Construction and the numeral 11 designates a drawer for the same. While the device is herein shown, applied and described to a cash register drawer, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to a cash register, but may be utilized for connection with a drawer of any description, wherein it is desired to light the same to more readily view its contents. For example, the drawer 11 may be an ordinary money drawer Secured to a counter, or it may be a'drawer of a piece of furniture, such as a bureau, dressing table or sideboard.
The drawer 11 is divided into separate compartments by the partitions 12 and 13, the partitiens 12 in the preferred form of the invention being formed with inverted ubstantially key hole shaped slots 14, ranged approximately central of each of the compartments 15. The upper end of each of the slots 14 is closed by means of a metal strip 16, which extends throughout the length of the partition and is provided with engaging elements or socket 17, for the purpose of receiving incandescent electric bulbs 18, the bulb proper being located within the circular portion of the slot 14.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the bulbs are arranged at the intersection of the partitions 12 and 13 within the openings 23 formed therein, so that one bulb will serve to illuminate four adjacent compartments.
In the modification shown in F i'g. 5, there is employed a bulbfor each separate compartment, these bulbs being mounted upon each side of the partition 12 and extending into each of the compartments.
Any suitable means may be employed such as a wire guard for protecting the bulb from the contents of the drawer.
Various changes may be made in the form and proportion of the invention and the right is reserved to make such changes.
5 therein fornng separate compartments,
said parttons having openngs theren, an electrc 'bulb located within each of said openngs to llumnate the adjacent c'fn- Copes of this patent may be obtained for partments and means for automatically lighting said bulb When the draWer s n an open position, of strps Secured to the upper edge of the parttons and lamp sockets depending from said strps to receive said bulbs and holcl them Wthn the openngs.
-In'testnony whereof I afix my signature.
