APPLICATION FlLED SEPT. 1 I. 1918.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application filed September 11, 1918. Serial 110.253.,508.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, HENRY B. SNYDER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Toy, of which the following is a speclfication.
My invention consists of a toy formed of a suitable plate, a movable target thereon, means for striking said target, and a flag, signal or display emblem, the latter being primarily controlled in a lowered pos1t1on, its carrier being adapted to be released when said target is struck whereby said flag, etc., is raised, and so presented to view.
It consists also in forming on said plate the representation of a military character, whose nose is occupied by the target, so that when the latter is struck there is a simulation of punching said nose.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a front view of a toy embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a rear View thereof.
Fig. 3 represents a vertical section on line 3-3 Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings,
1 designates a plate which may be formed of cardboard or other suitable material, the same in the present case having printed thereon the head of a foreign military character, whose nose is occupied by the target '2 which is connected with the lower limb of the sliding elbow 3, said limb and said target being adapted to be movable in the opening 4 which is formed in said plate at the place of occupation of said nose.
The elbow is guided in the ear 5 which is secured to the block 6 on the back of the plate 1, said plate being provided with a handle portion 7 for evident purposes.
The elbow 3 is engaged by the spring 8 which forms a cushion for the target 2 and returns the latter and said elbow 3 to normal position after said target has been struck, which latter is accomplished by the ball or dart 9 to which is attached one end of the elastic cord 10, the other end thereof being secured to the plate 1 about the wall of the opening 4 in said plate 1.
On the back of said plate are the flags 11 which are secured to staffs 12, the latter being freely fitted in openings in the guiding bar 13 which is attached to the back of the plate and connected with the slide rod 14, the latter being also guided in said bar 13, and through the guiding piece 15 on the plate below said bar 13.
Connected with said rod 14 and said bar 13 is the spring 16 whose tendency is to elevate the flags 11.
On the lower end of the rod 14 is the hook or eye-like member 17 which is adapted to be engaged by the upper limb of the elbow 3 when the rod 14 is set to hold the flags 11 in depressed position behind the plate 1, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The rod 14 is extended over the guide 13 and has at its top the button or head 18 whereby said rod may be conveniently lowered to cause the engagement of the hook or eyelike member 17 with the elbow 3, the latter being primarily pushed back forsuch purpose as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and then when let go has its upper limb enter the hook 17 thus placing the target 2 in position for the operation of the toy.
It will be seen that the primary object of the toy is to strike the target by the ball 9 which is properly aimed at said target, the cord 10 being stretched for such purpose. When the ball is let go and it strikes the target, the latter is pushed into the opening and the elbow is moved with it whereby its upper limb is stripped from the hook 17 on the rod 14 when the latter under impulse of the spring 16 quickly rises and elevates the flags 11 presenting them to view over or above the head of the figure on the plate.
As the target is struck it conveys to the player the idea that the nose of the head is punched or battered thus rendering the toy more interesting considering whom said head is intended to represent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A toy of the character stated consisting of a plate having an opening therethrough, a target on said plate at said opening, a member adapted to strike said target, a spring pressed movable elbow, the lower limb of which is adapted to pass through said opening and carry said target, an emblem, a staff therefor, a spring pressed vertically-extending slidable rod which is con nected with said staif, the lower end of said rod being provided with a hook member adapted to slidingly engage the upper limb of said elbow, a guide on said plate for said staff, a guide on said plate for said rod, a handle on which the lower portion of said plate is imposed and to which it is secured, and a guide on the top of said handle for said elbow.
2. In a toy of the character stated, a plate, a target thereon, a movable carrier for said target mounted on said plate, a device adapted to forcibly strike said target, an
emblem, a movable support for said emblem,
the same being guided on said plate, said carrier being adapted'to engage said support and to be disengaged therefrom, and a resilient member connected with said support for elevating the latter on its release from the target carrier and presenting the emblem to view in front, the support for the emblem having an upward extension,
adapted for resetting the emblem and con-4 necting it with said target.
