UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
JOSEPH P. CURRY, OF VINOENNES, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO JAMES W. ARCHER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMEIllT m GATE-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,324, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnPH P. CURRY, of Vincennes, in the county of Knox and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate -Latches; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a tube with an aperture on its under side having two inclines, and an interior spring-bolt provided with a handle projecting through said aperture, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate with my latch attached. Fig. 2 is a side view, part in section, of my latch; and Fig. 3 is a view of the under side of the same.
My latch is composed of a tube, A, placed horizontally in the outer upright bar of the gate, the mouth of the tube being flush with the outer surface of said bar. The inner end of the tube A is closed, as shown in Fig. 2, and in the same is placed a bolt, B, with a spiral spring, 0, behind the bolt, at the inner end of the tube) Through the under side of the tube A is an aperture for the passage of a handle, D, depending from the bolt B, which also acts as a stop, preventing the spring 0 from forcing the bolt out. The aperture in the tube has an inclined plane, a, on each side, so that, by turning the handle D to either side it will at the same time move inward, carrying the bolt with it, for unlatching the gate. a
This latch may be attached to either right or left hand gates. Upon the gate-post is attached an inclined plate, E, so that when the gate is closed the bolt will be forced in to pass said plate, and then the spring 0 forces the bolt out again.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the tube A, having an aperture, with inclines a a, bolt B, spring 0, and handle D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 3d day of April, 1872.
- JOS. P. CURRY. [L. 8.]
