Description
I. C. TOUGH.
WATCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 18, 1918.
1,292,540. Patented Jan. 28, 1919.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. TOUGH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR '10 DUBOIS WATCH CASE COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK..
WATCH.
Application filed March 18, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. TOUGH, a subject of the King of England, and a resident of the borough of Queens of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part hereof.
This invention relates to means for making a water tight joint between the pendant of a stem-winding watch and the crown which carries the winding and setting stem, and it has for its object to provide simple and eflective means for making the joint sufficiently tight to prevent the penetration of moisture within the watchcase about the winding and setting stem while permitting the crown to be released readily for winding and setting. The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which it is illustrated, and in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing a portion of a watchcase with the crown, the crown being locked to the pendant.
Fig. 2 is a detail view in section, on a larger scale, showing the parts in the same position and showing the winding and setting stem in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the crown in position for winding.
Fig. 4 is a View in section, on the plane indicated by the line H of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a detail view, in section on the plane indicated by the line 55 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The watch case center a is shown as having secured thereto in any suitable manner a pendant or base 6 which is provided with an annular recess 0, which forms a seat for an annular packing ring d. The base or pendant is also provided with headed studs 6 which project beyond the surface of the pendant. The crown f, to which is secured, in any suitable manner, the winding and setting stem 9, is provided with a flange h in which are formed key-hole slots 2' for cooperation respectively with the headed studs 6. The narrow portion of each slot 2' has its side walls beveled, as shown in Fig. 5 at i, for cooperation with the head of the corre- Spedification 0! Letters Patent.

sponding stud e. The under side of the flange h is provided with an annular rib or projection in for cooperation with the washer or packing d.
When the watch is to be wound or to be set, the crown is backed off to disengage the heads of the studs e from the narrow por-- tions of the key-hole slots in the flange h and is then pulled out for winding or setting as the case may be. When the operation of winding or setting has been completed, the crown is rotated to bring the larger portions of the key-hole slots in line with the studs 6, is then pushed in so as to cause the heads of the studs to pass through the larger portions of the slots, and is then rotated slightly to cause the edges of the studs to be engaged by the inclined walls of the narrow portions of the slots, whereby the annular rib or projection is is pressed firmly against the washer or packing d to compress the same and make a tight joint.
The base 6 preferably has a sleeve 7) extended upward within the crown f and into an annular recess 7 in the head thereof for the purpose of preventing the entrance of dust or moisture when the crown is released and pulled out.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a watch, the combination of a watchcase center, a pendant or base secured to the center and having a relatively fiat face, headed studs projecting beyond the face of said base and a crown having a flange with key-hole slots adapted for engagement with the heads of the studs, and adapted to make a tight joint with the base, the side walls of the narrow portions of said slots being inclined or beveled.
2. In a watch, the combination of a watchcase center, a pendant or base secured to the center and having a relatively fiat face with an annular recess, headed studs projecting beyond the face of said base, a crown having a flange with key-hole slots adapted for engagement with the heads of the studs, the side walls of the narrow portions of said slots being inclined or beveled, said flange also having on its under face an annular rib or projection, and a packing interposed between the base and the crown.
This specification signed this 14th day of March, A. I). 1.918.
JAMES C. TOUGH.
