To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, HERBERT CoRnALL, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Parkview, Helensburgh, Dumbartonshire, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful'lmprovements in Shuttle-Guard and Release Devices for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a release device for a cylindrical or barrel-shaped threadcase when mounted in a loop-taker or shuttle and it has for its primary object the provision of a construction which will facilitate the removal and rein-sertion of a bobbin in the thread-case when the latter is in a predetermined position and when it is locked against further movement.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a stop device to prevent the machine from being started until the threadcase is restored to the body of the looptaker.
The improvement comprises a manually operable plural-armed rocker mounted adjacent the loop-taker raceway and adapted to be operated so that one of its arms acts as a stop to restrain the loop-taker driver against movement while another arm releases the latch retaining the thread-case in the loop-taker, further movement of the rocker swinging the thread-case outwardly so that its open end will be exposed for the removal or insertion of a bobbin.
A preferred form of the improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the frame provided with a loop-taker raceway With the rocker and loop-taker driver and a portion of the main-shaft also in section, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation corresponding to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rocker for releasing and tilting the thread-case.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes a bearing in which is journaled the actuating shaft 2. Extending from the bearing 1 is a frame 3 formed with a raceway 4 adapted to receive a loop-taker 5 in the form of an oscillating shuttle which is actuated by a driver 6 carried by the shaft 2. Pivotally j ournaled by means of the hinge-pin 7 within the loop-taker 5 is the cylindrical or barrel-shaped thread-case 8 provided with an opening 9 adapted to be entered by the head 10 of a latch-spring 11 carried by and secured to the loop-taker 5 by the screw 12. The latch-spring 11 retains the thread-case 8 in operative position within the loop-taker during the stitching operation. The looptaker 5 is'maintained in its raceway by the cap 13 retained against the frame 3 by the spring-plate 14 held in position by the screwstud l5 tapped into the frame. The mechanism so far described is that of the well known Singer sewing machine of the oscillating shuttle type.
Depending from the frame 3 are a pair of spaced bearing-lugs 16 entered by the pivotal stud 17 upon which is journaled the plural-armed rocker for releasing and tilting the thread-case 8. This rocker comprises a body portion 18 formed with a pair of upwardly extending spaced arms 19 and 20 and an operating handle 21 secured to the body portion 18 by the fastening screws 22.
To tilt the thread-case 8 it is preferable to first bring the loop-taker 5 and its driver 6 into predetermined position and to retain them in such position against further movement. This condition is fulfilled when the edge 23 of the driver 6 is in a substantially horizontal position. WVhen brought into this position the arm 20 of the rocker will freely pass below the edge 23 of the driver and restrain the latter against further movement. The spaced arms 19 and 20 of the rocker are so arranged that after the arm 20 has passed beneath the wall of the driver the arm 19 will contact with and release the latch-spring 11 so as to permit the threadcase 8 to swing on its hinge-pin 7. The thread-case having been released, further movement of the rocker will cause the end of the arm 20 to engage the lower end of the thread-case 8 and forcibly move the latter until its open end is clear of the raceway frame 3 into a position favorable for renewal of. a bobbin containing a mass of lower thread.
It will be readily understood that after the thread-case 8 has been released by the manipulation of the plural-armed rocker, the arm 20 of the latter will obstruct the path of movement of the driver and restrain it against further movement until the rocker is moved into inoperative position and the thread-case 8 restored to its position in the loop-taker 5.
Mounted in the rocker 18 is a springpressed plunger-pin 24: whose head enters a suitable cavity 25 formed upon the inner face of the bearing lug 16 to yieldin gly retain the rocker 18 in retracted or inoperative position with the operating handle 2]. close to the forward face of the thread-case 8 and the arms 19 and 20 out of the path of the driver 6 so that there will be no liability of the rocker being accidentally swung into operative position during the oscillation of the shuttle with a possible breakage of the arms of the rocker;
Having thus/set forth the nature of the invention, what'I claim herein is 1. In a sewing machine, in combination, a racewa a loop-taker mounted therein, a thread-case hinged upon said loop-taker, and means for tilting said thread-case relatively to said loop-taker.
2. In a sewing machine, in combination, a raceway, a loop-taker mounted therein, a thread-case carried by said looptaker, a latch for retaining said thread-case in said loop-taker, and means for releasing said latch and tilting said thread-case.
3. In a sewing machine, in combination, a raceway, a loop-taker mounted therein, means for actuating said loop-taker, a thread-case carried by said loop-taker, and means comprising a common element to re strain said loop-taker against movement and to tilt said thread-case.
4:. In a sewing machine, in combination, a raceway, a loop-taker mounted therein, means for actuating said loop-taker, a thread-case carried by said loop-taker, a latch retaining said thread-case in said loop-taker, a release for said latch, and means comprising a common element to restrain said loop-taker against movement and to release said latch.
5. In a sewing machine, in combination, a raceway, a loop-taker mounted therein,
means for actuating said loop-taker, a thread-case carried by said loop-taker, a latch for retaining said thread-case in said loop-taker, and a rocker having arms adapted respectively to restrain said looptaker against movement, to release said latch and to tilt said thread-case into a position favorable for renewal of a mass of lower thread.
6. In a sewing machine, in combination, a raceway,- a shuttle adapted for movement therein, a thread-case carried by said shuttle, a latch for retaining said thread-case in said shuttle, and a manually operable device for releasing and tilting said thread-case.
7 In a sewing machine, in combination, a raceway, a shuttle adapted for movement therein, a shuttledriver, a thread-case carried by said shuttle, a latch for retaining said thread-case in said shuttle, and a manually operable device adapted to aiford a stop for the shuttle driver and to release and tilt the thread-case.
8. In a sewing machine, in combination, a raceway, a loop-taker mounted therein, a thread-caseyhinged upon said loop-taker, means for displacing said thread-case from normal relation with said loop-taker for renewal of the thread-supply, and means for retaining said displacing means in retracted or inoperative position.
9. In a sewing machine, in combination, a raceway, a loop-taker mounted therein, a thread-case connected to said loop-taker,
and means for tilting said thread-case relatively to said loop-taker while maintaining the connection between the two.
10. In a sewing machine, in combination, a loop-taker including a thread-case support, a thread-case hinged to said support, and means for tilting said thread-case relatively to said support to a position favorable for renewal of the lower thread mass.
