FLAG-WHEEL FOR RADIATOR-CAPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1919.
Application led September 26, 1918. Serial No. 255,762.
Same;
The present invention relates to a display attachment for automobile radiator caps, and has for its object toprovide a Adevice of this character which embodies novel fea- '.tures of constructiouwhereby it canbereadily clamped upon a conventional cap and provides a moving display which is of a pleasing character and will attract attention.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character in which the display elements are mounted upon a revolving rnembery driven by a wind wheel so that the parts are positively driven while the automobile is in motion, which can be easily assembled or taken apart, which is not liable to break or get out of repair, and which provides Van effective means for displaying the national flag in association with the iags of friendly countries.
c With these and lother objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out inthe appended claims.
For a 'full understanding of the invention,
Vreference isto'behad to the following description and accompanying drawings, in
Figure 1 "is a vertical sectional "view through a ,radiatorl cap attachment constructed'in accordance with the invention.
Fig2 is a top plan view of the'same with the revolving disk removed.
Fig. 3V is a front elevation of the device,
showing itas mounted upon the radiator cap at'the front of 'an automobile.
" 'Corresponding and like parts are referred to inthe following descriptionl and indicated "in 'all the views-'of the drawings by the ysame reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, whichillustrate one possible embodiment of the invention, the reference character A designates an open frame which is of a proper size to fit around and inclose the conventional cap of an automobile radiator.A The frame may be formed with two oomplemental side bars 1 whichl have the intermediate portions thereof Acorrespondingly bowed or deiiected outwardly, the ends 1a of the bars at the front of the frame being extended forwardly in a spaced and parallel relation and having a pai-r of bearing blocks 2 arranged between the same and secured 1n pos1t1onv1n any suitable manner as by means of the fastening members 3, while the opposite ends 1b of the bars project yrearwardly and are connected by a clamping bolt 4. A series of arms 5 project inwardly lfrom the upper edge portion of the open yframe A, said arms being radially disposed with respect to the frame and terminating at their inner` ends in upwardly projecting anges 5a which are secured by fastening members 6 to a centrally disposed block 7 Projecting upwardly from the block 7 is a stud 8 upon which the hub 9n of a disk 9 is rotatably mounted. A cap 10 is fitted upon the upper end of the stud 8 and serves to hold the disk 9 in position thereon, and the periphery of the disk is formed with a depending annular rack 11 which meshes with a pinion 12. This pinion 12 is rigid with a short horizontal shaft 13 which extends forwardly from the frame A and lis journaled, within the bearing blocks 2, the
rear end of the shaft being provided with a head 14, whilethe forward end thereof terminatesv in a reduced threaded portion 13aL upon which .the hub of the wind wheel 15 is threaded. The wind wheel and head 14 hold the shaft 13 a ainst longitudinal move` Vby causing the disk to revolve continuously while the motor vehicle is in motion.
The display includes a central Hagl carried by a stall 17 which has the lower end thereof secured in an opening in the pivot stud 8, and a series of smaller flags 18 carried by staffs 19 which have the lower ends thereof swiveled in the rim portion of the disk 9 at intervals in the periphery thereof. For this purpose the rim of the disk is provided with openings 20 which loosely receive the lower ends of the staffs 19, and also rack, display yelements carried by the disk,
with small bosses 21 surrounding the mouths of the openings. Caps 22 are fitted removably upon the bosses 21 and engage collars 23 on the flag staffs 19 to hold the flag staffs against vertical displacement. 1t will be obvious, however, that the flag staffs are free to rotate about a vertical axis, and that as the disk 9 rotates the fiag staffs will also revolve in order that the flags may at all times stream rearwardly in the direction of the wind.
In fastening the device to a radiator cap, the open frame A is placed around the cap and the overhanging rim portion of the cap caused to be engaged by claws 24 which are dependent from the arms 5. These claws may be conveniently formed from tongues which are stamped from the arms and pressed downwardly. When thus constructed the claws will have a Certain amount of resiliency for bringing about a firm engagement with vthe Vradiator cap, and by tightening the clamping bolt 4 the sides of the frame can be drawn together to bring the i claws into a tight gripningengagement with the cap. The wind wheel. 15 is arranged to face the front of the motor vehicle, so that it will be acted upon bv. the air to drive the shaft 13 and rotate the disk 9 when the inotor vehicle is in motion. display elements carried by the rotatable disk will thus be kept in motion and displayed in an attractive and most effective manner.
Having thus described -the invention, what I lclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An attachment vfor automobile radiator caps including a clamping frame surrounding the cap, Va Vblock supported over the frame and provided withV a pivot stud, Va `horizontally disposed disk journaled .on v,the
`pivot stud and provided with ,a peripheral a pinion .meshing with the rack, and a wind wheel operatively connected with the pinion ,for driving the same `to rotate the disk.`
' 2. An .attachment for automobile radiator caps including a clamping frame .surrounding the cap, a block supported over the frame and provided .with a pivot stud,V
a horizontally disposed diskl journaled .on
the pivot 'stud andifprovided with an annular rack, a series of staffs .projecting upwardly from the-disk and swiveled thereto,
V.flags carried -by the staffs, a pinion engaging The flags or other.
the rack of the disk, and a. wind wheel operatively connected to the pinion for driving` the same.
3. Y An attachment for automobile radiator caps including a clamping frame surrounding the cap and formed in compleinental sections of which the forward ends are eX- tended in a spaced relation, a pair of bearing blocks secured between the said forward ends, a short shaft journaled between' the bearing blocks, a pinion rigid with the shaft and arranged between the bearing blocks, a wind rwheel rigid with the forward end of the shaft, a block supportedV over the frame and provided with a Vpivot stud, a
horizontally disposed disk journaled on the,
a peripheral rack, display elements carried A by the disk, a pinion meshing with the peripheral rack of the disk, and a windwheel having an operative connection with the pinion.
5. An attachment for automobile radial 4tor caps including a clamping frame lsurrounding the cap, a block arranged over the frame, a series of arms projecting inwardly from the frame and secured to the block, claws projecting downwardly from the arms and arranged for engagement with the .rad-iator cap, a horizontally disposed disk journaled on the block, a central flagsta pro-Y jecting upwardly fromthe block, a series of flag staffs projecting upwardly from the periphery of the disk and having a swivel connection thereto, flags onfthe flag staffs,
. a wind wheel ca rried by the frame, anda .driving connection between the wind wheel and the disk.
6. An attachment for automobile radiator Y caps including a clamping frame surrounding the cap and formed of compleinental side bars having the intermediate portions thereof correspondingly bowed, the forward` vends of the bars being extended forwardly in a spaced relation, a pair of spaced lbearing 'blocks secured between the forwardly extendingends ofthe bars, a clamping Y:bolt
izovr connecting the rear ends of the bars,
short shaft journaled upon Vthe lbearing blocks, -a pinionV rigid Vwith the short shaft and arranged between :the bearing blocks, a wind wheel applied `to the forward end of the short shaft, a block sup-5 ported centrally-over vthe frame, arms projecting inwardly from the frame and se- In testimony whereof I have signed my cured to the block, claws carried by the name to this specification in the presence of arms for engaging the radiator cap, a horitwo subscribing witnesses.
