Specification of Letterslatent.
Patented J an. 14:, 1919.
Application filed May 6, 1918. Serial No. 232,728.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Louis BLUMEN'II-IAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners for Cloth-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for sharpening the lower cutting edge of a cloth cutting machine knife without removing it from the machine.
The invention is designed to provide a simple and efficient grinding device for coaction with the lower portion of the knife which can readily be operated and accurately adjusted to center it relative to the lower bevel edge of the knife. The invention comprehends a pair of rotary emery stone holders having universal adjustment to automatically position the holders for engagementwith the bevel portions of the knife.
The invention is more fully described in the following specifications and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation showing the invention applied to the lower portion of a cloth cutting machine.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a universal shaft.
Fig. 4c is a horizontal section taken along the line 4 l of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of Fig. 1 showing the standard in section.
Fig. 6 isa perspective view of the centering clamp.
In this drawing the numeral 10 designates a channeled standard suitable for guiding a vertically arranged knife 11 having a lower cutting edge. The knife is reciprocated in the standard by mechanism which is well known and needs no further description.
0n the base plate 12 of the standard is arranged a frame 13 having a base extension 14 secured to the frame. The base is pro vided with clamping members 15 having rear flanges 16 and a centering key or tongue 17 projecting from the forward portion of the clamp. A latch 18, best seen in Fig. 6,
is swingingly mounted on the rear of the flanges which when swung over the back of the standard, as indicated in Fig. 1, will securely lock the clamp to the standard.
The key engages the channel when the clamp is in place and the clamping members or walls embrace the sides of the standard to eliminate movement of the clamp. By having the key in engagement with the channel, as shown in Fig. 4:, the clamp and the grinding devices carried by the clamp will be positioned. in alinement with the knife.
The frame 13 supports a pair of shafts 19 having a universal joint 20 to permit the shafts to be arranged at an angle to each other. Each shaft is provided with a semicircular holder 21 for carrying a block of emery 22 secured to the holder. A key 23 coacting with a slot 24 in the holder will lock it to the shaft, but permit the holder to slide forward or back on the shaft. A. coiled spring 25 will force the holder forward toward the lower side portion of the knife.
The means for rotating the holders includes a pinion 26 fastened to one end of the universal shaft and a gear 27 mounted on a driving shaft 28 operated by a crank 29 fixed to the shaft.
When the crank is operated, it transmits motion to the universal shaft and the pair of holders revolve in the same direction with the shaft. Both holders are forced toward each other by the coiled springs, so that the emery blocks will coact with the bevel lower portion of the knife and the rotation of the holders grinds the same to a fine point.
I claim 1. A knife sharpening device comprising a universal. jointed shaft, means for rotating the shaft, spring pressed semicircular abrasive holders slidingly mounted on the shaft for engagement with the lower portion of a knife, and means for alining the holders relative to the knife.
2. A knife sharpening device comprising a standard and a frame, abrasive holders mounted on the frame for coaction with the lower portion of a knife, and a clamp connected to the standard for centering the holders relative to the knife.
3. A hufe sharpening device comprising a channel standard and a frame, abrasive my hand in the presence of two subscribing hohlilleri1 mounted on the fi famekfol coaction Witnesses.
