Improvement in Plows.
NO 129 05.7. PatentedJuly16,1872.

UNITED STATES' ALEXANDER RICKARD, OF SOHOHARIE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLows.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,057, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Plows, invented by ALEXAN- DER RIGKARD, of Schoharie, in the county of Schoharie and State of New York.
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved plow taken through the line :v x, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view ofthe same partly in section through the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of shovel-plows, so as to make them more generally useful, by so constructing 'them that they may be readily and effectively used in hard ground, and that they may run steady at whatever angle they may be set to enter the ground; and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the plow, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the plow-beam. B represents the sta-ndard, which may be formed in asingle piece with the beam, or may be formed separate, and attached to said beam. Upon the 4lower end of the standard B is formed a foot,
C, as shown in Fig. l. D is a shoe, which is fitted upon the foot C. The forward end of the shoe D has a socket or recess formed in it to receive the forward end or point of the foot C or standard B. Upon the upper side of the rear end of the shoe D is formed a lug, d, to enter a slot or recess in the heel or rear end of the foot C or standard B, or two lugs to receive the heel or rear end between them. The
lug (or lugs) d has several holes formed in it to receive the bolt that secures it to the foot (l or standard B. This construction enables the shoe D to be adjusted to correspond with the adjustment of the draft, so that the shoe D may bear squarely upon the bottom of the furrow at Whatever angle the plow may be working in the ground, so as draw steady instead ot' hopping along upon its point when adjusted to run deep in the ground. E is the shovel, which is made with adjustable wings, F, which are secured to the stationary wings of said shovel E by bolts which pass through t lslots in the said wings F, so that the wings may be set out or in as may be desired. Upon the central upper part of the shovel E is formed or to itis attached a colter, G, as shown in Figs. l and 2, to divide the soil as the plow is drawn forward so as to make the plow work easier in plowing hard ground.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The shoe D, having socket in front and apertured lug d in rear end, combined as described with standard B, having foot C with point in front and slot in rear to allow said shoe to be adjusted to correspond to any change of draft.
