WILLIAM A. JOHNSTON, OF PRINCE BAY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE S. S. WHITE DENTAL MAN UFAGTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
To all/whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLLAM A. JoHN- `in the execution of the duties incident to his profession, and is especially directed to the convenient position `of the electrical mechanism.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an equipment stand arranged to be placed in convenient proximity to a dental operating chair, and in which -the spit- AsaA vto
toon carrying pedestal serves as a conduit through which air, gas and electric current may be supplied tothe accessory devices employed, as Well as the water for said spittoon and its tumbler.
Other objects of my invention are to provide an equipment stand with the controlling parts and implements so conveniently arranged as to be within easy reach from the operators position and to afford `free and convenient access of the operator to said parts and implements without interfering with the use of the spittoon by the patient.
Specifically stated, the form of myinvention as hereinafter described, comprehends an equipment stand comprising a spittoonsupporting pedestal having in its base a vchamber providing a distributing station wherein the electrical connections foil the various devices employed may be made with the line circuit, and having a hollow arm projecting laterally and upwardly and oarrying an accessory head embodying 4a switchboard, :tromV where the various devices maybe controlled.
My invention also includes all of the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter lmore definitely specified.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevational view showing a spittoon pedestal carrying an accessory head, embodying-a switchboard in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan Specification of Letters Patent. i Application led October 14, 1918. Serial No. 258,109.
' Patented Jan. 7, I1919.
sectional view of said pedestal taken on the v line 2 2 in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a -sectional elevational view of the -accessory head showing the contact plate of the switchboard and the air and gas controlling .mechanism in elevation for convenience of illustration.
In said figures the pedestal 1 has the base 2 and supports the spittoon bowl 3 and the tumbler-holder 5 carrying the tumbler 6, being supplied with water through the water supply pipe 7 which is connected with the distributing pipe 9 byy the conduit 10, controlled by the valve 11 having the handle 12. The waste water discharged from the spittoon bowl and tumbler-holder is carried through the pedestal by the waste-pipe 13 which is connected by the union 15 with the drain pipe- 16 leading to the sewer or other suitable outlet.
The pedestal 1 is provided with the laterally and upwardly extending hollow armv17' which conveniently supports the accessory head 19 embodying the switchboard 20, and
comprising air controlled valves 21 and 22,
and their respective pressure indicators 23 and 24, and the electric current regulators or rheostats 25, 26 and 27, whose handles 28, 29 and 30, respectively, carry indicating pointers arranged to indicate by the graduations ofthe respective dials 31, 32 and 33,
the'position of the contact engaging arms 35, 36 and 37, respectively, which swing over and engagey the contacts 39, 40 and 41, I
nal lamp 60 which may be connected to flash desired signals to the operator. The spot light 51'is preferably composed of suitably disposed lenses and reflector adapted to d1- rect intensified rays of light into the patients mouth, and is supported by the bracket having universal joints so that it may be positioned to direct rays of light at anydesired angle.
Said accessory head is provided with air outlets respectively controlled by thelr vvalves 62, 63 and 64, to the nipples of which hot air syringefl being connected by the the various air actuated implements are connected; the chip blower 65 being connected by the flexible tubing .66 with the outlet havingv the valve 62; the spray bottle valve 69 being connected by the exible tubing 70 with the outlet having the valve 63; and the flexible tubing 72 with the voutlet having the valve 64.
`As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the chip blower 65, spray bottle valve 69 and the hot air syringe 71 may be respectively supported when not in use upon ,the hooks 73, 74. and 75 projecting from th'ebracket arm 58.
The switchboard 20 is provided with plug. sockets 76, 77 and 781er the reception of the terminal plugs 79, 80 and 81; the plug 79 being connected'by the exible cord 82 with the mouth lamp 83; the plug 80 being connected by the flexible lcord 85 with Athe cautery 86 or other vsuch instrument; andthe plug 81 Vbeing connected by the flexible cord f 88 with a suitable heating coil 89 in thellexible tubing 72 for heating lthe air for the syringe 71. o 4 The bracket' table 57 is provided with the gas burner 90 which is connected bythe Hexible tubing 91,'withthe nipple 92 of the gas controlling valve 93 in the pipe 94: which leads through the accessoryhead 19, armv 17 and pedestal l, and which is arranged to be connected through the basev 2 with any suitable source of gas supplied by the vunion 95. l l f The compressed air for the chipblower 65, spray bottle valve 69 and hot air syringe 71.
, is filtered through the filter 96 in the acces;
sory head 19, see `Fig. 3, to which it is carriedby the air pipe 97 leading through the arm 17 and pedestal 1, and `having the union 98 by which,it is arranged to be connected through the base 2 with anysuitable source of air supply.
The electrically operated devices are connected to the switchboard by the leads 99 forming a cable which extends through the arm 17 and pedestall to a'suitable distributlng station com rising the box-100, in the vbase 2 of the pe estal 1. As shown 1n Figs.
1 and 2, a' sheath or conduit is provided to .protectthe cable from any moisture incident y to drip or condensation on the pipes passing throughthe pedestal 1.
The motor 45 ofthe engine 43 is arranged to be controlled bythe foot controller 102 having the pedal lever 103 and connected byc the flexible cord 105 with the leads 106 and 107 of the motor 4:5 at the distributing sta-1 tion above described.
It will be obvious that by supporting the accessory Ihead comprising the switchboard on the lspittoon pedestahgreat convenience t0 the operator is alorded, and a consequent saving of time elliectedas well as conserving valuable floor space.
