Be it known that I, PALEY K. RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mangum,` in the county of Greer and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WeaningeBits; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to bits to prevent sucking by colts or calves and the primary object of the invention is to provide a new and improved bit of this character which will be economical to manufacture, simple in construction, efficient in operation and not liable to get out of order.

The principal use of my bit is to wean colts and calves but it will be also available 'for use in the mouths of animals suffering from bloat or colic and a further object of the invention is` to adapt the bit to such use.

With these objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically claimed.

1n order that the construction and operation thereof may be readily comprehended, 1 have illustrated an approved embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawing and will now proceed to speciiically describe the same in connection with such drawing, in which Figure 1 represents an elevation of the inner side of my bit, including the securing rings,

Like reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures oit' the drawteferring particularly to the drawing, 5 indicates the body, tube, or mouth-piece of my improved bit which is curved outwardly and has integral ears 6, 6, at the ends oit' its inner side 7 which are adapted to receive rings 8, 8, such as are used on an ordinary bridle bit and designed to receive the harness by which the bit is held in place, said ears 6, 6, being bent into the form of rings 9, 9, to encompass and loosely hold the rings 8, 8, in the ordinary manner.

The tubular body 5 is open from end to end and is provided with a centrally located series of holes 10 in its outer or convex side 11, and two series of holes 12,312, in its inner or concave side 7 located substantially midway between the center and the ends of the tubular body, which body is very much greater in diameter than the ordinary solid driving or riding bit for purposes hereinafter named.

When the bit, constructed as described, is placed in an animals mouth, the mouth is held open and when an attempt is made to suck, wind is admitted through the outer series l() of holes and the inner holes 12, 12, or through the ends o1? the tubular body and the inner holes should the outer holes by any means be obstructed.

This :tree passage of air through the holes is facilitated by their location, the forward central series 10 being removed from the locations of the gums of the animal and the ends of the tubular body projecting beyond the sides of the mouth. The air being surely admitted into the interior oitl the body, and the inner series of holes 12, 12, being largely out of reach of the tongue, the free passage of the air through said inner holes is assured and the power of the attempt at suction by the animal is destroyed.

The use of my improved bit will also greatly relieve animals aifected with bloat or colic, inasmuch as the mouth is held open, the wind produced by the disease is aiiorded a free passage outward and thrown ott, the animal being prevented from retaining it by keeping its mouth open.

Making the ears 6, 6, integral with the body is economical and useful, inasmuch as there is no tendency to misplace any other means of connecting the rings 8, and the eX- penditure of time and labori in riveting or otherwise attaching ears is dispensed with.

I have found by long experiment and use that my bit, constructed as described, automatically keeps clean and is never stopped up, the small amounts of milk in attempted sucking and the water passing through the body serve to wash it out and keep it clean.

While I have specifically described the construction and arrangement of the parts of my bit, lf do not absolutely eoniine myself thereto, as slight changes or variations may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

As an article of manufacture, a weaning bit consisting of a tubular body arcuately curved throughout its length and having attaching means at its opposite ends, said tubular body being provided in its convex side at a point intermediate its ends with a series of openings, and provided in its concave side with two series of openings, each series of openings on the concave side being arranged at a point intermediate the central portion of the tubular body member and its end, all said series of openings cooperating to facilitate the free passage oi air through the 15 body.
