HERBERT G. IRWIN, 0F SPUR, TEXAS.
VAPORIZING ATTACHMENT FOR INTERNAL-GOMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application filed December 3, 1917.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT G. lRwIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spur, in the county of Dickens and State of rTexas, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Vaporizing Attachments for Internal-Combustion Engines; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments to internal combustion engines, providing means for vaporizing and introducing into the cylinders a liquid fuel or decarbonizing solution while the `motor is in motion, for the pun pose of removing carbon deposit in the cylinders, or introducing a light highly comw bustible fuel to aid in the combustion of heavy fuels.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specially defined in the appended claim.
l illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view through the device, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter:
N designates a casting which is flanged as at N7 near the rear thereof, and forming means whereby the device may be secured to the running board B of an automobile. Said casting has tapering nipples NG pass ing through apertures in the running board. Pipes l 3 and N are respectively connected by means of the couplings N5 to said nipu ples. The casting has parallel ducts N and N2 leading through the nipples, the former communicating with the pipe Na and the latter with the pipe N4. Said casting has formed therein a cylindrical outlined vertical opening in which a rotatable plug O Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
Serial No. 205,197.
is journaled, and which plug valve has a flange O resting upon the top of the casting, and a handle O2 for turning the plug. The lower end of the valve has a screw @5 fitted in a hole in the bottom thereof, and
interposed between the screw and the bottom of the casting is a washer O". The plug is provided with angular outlined ducts O3 and O4 formed therein and which, at their adjacent ends, open into a narrow transverse slot O7 formed in the valve. ducts O3 and O4' are designed to register when the valve is in certain positions rcspectively with the ducts N and N2.
The outer face of the casting is recessed The 6 5 away, as at l, at a location about the slot OT to permit air to pass freely into the ducts of the valve.
In operation, when the valve O is positioned so that the duct 03 will register with the duct N and the duct 04 with the duct75 N2, the suction from the manifold through the pipe N3, which communicates therewith, will cause fuel to be drawn from the pipe Ntand ducts N2 and Nt. The slot 07 being narrow, the suction from the manifold will not only draw the oil up through the duct O4, but will also draw in air through the slot O7 and which air commingles with the oil before it enters the cylinderl of the engine.
What l claim to be new is:
An attachment for engines to prevent carbonization, etc., consisting of a casting having integral nipples adapted to be passed through the wall of the running board of an automobile, with flanges at the rear of ln testimony whereof I hereunto afhx my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
