The invention relates to wearing apparel, and its object is to provide a new and improved cap more especially designed for use Vby miners, firemen and other persons liable to be exposedA to falling coal, rock, debris and other materials, and arranged to protect the head `of the wearer against injury from such falling material. Another object is to provide a cushion to take up the shock incident to a piece of falling material striking the cap. Another object is to provide a rcushion which is simple and durable in construction, comparatively light and not liable toV interfere with the comfort of the wearer.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as' hereinafter shown and described and'then specically ypointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cap as arranged for use by a miner with parts shown in section; and

Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same.

The crown of the miners cap illustrated inthe drawings is formed of a side 10 and an approximately flat top 11, and in the lower end of the side 10 is arranged the usual sweatband 12, and the front of the side 10 is provided with a vizor 18. A miners lamp holder 14 for supporting a miners lamp 15 is attached to the top 11 and the vizor 13, and this miners lamp holder is preferably of the construction shown and 11 of the crown, and a cushioning member 21 arranged below the top member 2O and spaced therefrom by spacing blocks 22 spaced apart at the margins of the members 20 and 21. The protecting top member 2O is made of anon-yielding material such as vulcanized liber, heavy cardboard or the like, and the cushioning member 21 and the spacing blocks 22 are made of a soft material such as felt. A lining 23 of oilcloth or similar material is preferably attached to the under side of the cushioning member 21 to prevent irritation of the miners head bv contact with the felt. n

In order to attach the cushion to the inside of the cap use is made of supporting brackets orarms 25 of vulcanized fiber or other suitable nonyielding material, each bracket 25 being provided at its upper end with an inwardly extending flange 26 overlying` the protecting top member 20. The several brackets 25 extend downwardly opposite the spacing members 22 and the several parts are fastened together by rivets 27 or other suitable fastening devices which connect the lining 23, the cushioning member 21, the spacing blocks 22 and flanges 26 with each other, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2. The brackets 25 it against the inner surface of the side 10 of the crown, and the lower ends of the bracketsA are arranged between the crown side and the sweatband 12 and are fastened to the sweatband 12 by rivets 28 or other fastening devices. By the arrangement described the cushion is wholly independent of the top 11 of the crown but is supported from the lower end of the side 10 of the crown.

In practice, three brackets 25 are provided, two at the side and one at the rear, and at the front the cushion is connected by rivets 30 or other fastening devices with the upper end of the lamp holder 14 thus providing a support for the cushion at the front thereof.

It will be noticed that a Ventilating space is provided between the protecting top member 2O and the cushioning member 21, and the crown side 10 is provided with the usual Ventilating openings A() to keep the interior of the cap comparatively cool.

It will also be noticed that the cushioning member 21 is free to yield in an upward direction in case a piece of coal, rock or other material falls onto the top 11 of the crown, it being understood that the lining 23 of the cushioning member 21 is in contact at the time with the top of the miners head. rIhus the piece of coal, rock or other material falling onto the crown top ll is sustained by the protecting top member 20 of nonyelding material and extending directly under the top 1l. By the arrangement described the head of the user of the cap is protected from falling coal, rock, debris and other material, and the cushion described takes up the shock incident to such falling material striking thecap. It will also be noticed that the mners head is not liable to be bruised or otherwise injured from bumps or knocks lia-ble to be sustained in low workin s.-

illaving thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A cap cushion, comprising a protecting top member of a non-yielding material and extending under the top of the crown of the cap, a cushioning member below the said protecting top member, spacing means u connecting the said top member with the said cushioning member, and attaching means connected with the said top member and fastened to the side of the crown.-

2. A cap cushion, comprising a protecting top member of a non-yielding material and extending under the top ofthe crown of the cap, a cushioning member below the said protecting top meniber and made of a soft material, spacing blocks interposed between Vlower ends to the side of the crown.

3. A cap cushion, comprising a protecting top member of a non-yielding material and extending under the top of the crown of the cap, a cushioning member below the said protecting top member and made of a` soft material, spacing blocks interposedbetween the said Itop member and the said cushioning' member along their margins, depending supporting brackets provided at their upper ends with flanges engaging the said top member, fastening nmeans connecting the top member, the said cushioning member, the spacing Vblocks and the said bracket flanges together, and fastening means attaching the lower ends of the said brackets to the side of the crown.

A cap, .comprising a crown having a side and flat top, a sweatband, a vizor, a miners lamp holder connecting the top of the crown with the Vizor, a cushion within the crown immediately below the said crown top, the cushion having Vva rigid top member and a cushioning bottom member spaced from. the said top member, the said lamp holder being connected with the. front of the said cushion, and brackets .at the sides and back of the cushion and connected with the side of the crown.
