- qpoizzo n. BUTTON, or
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known: that I, Lonzo -D. DUTTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Winfield, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, haveinvented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lock-Controlled Valves, of which the following is a specification.
'The present invention relates to valves, and particularly to that type which are adapted to be locked in closed position to prevent the unauthorized flow of a fluid through the valve. j
An object of the present invention is to provide a lock-controlled valve of this character which is particularly adapted for motor vehicles andthe like and adapted to be interposed between the supply tank and the motor to preventthe unauthorized use of the motor vehicle, and to prevent the withdrawing of the contents 'of the fuel tank by un authorized persons. I
. Another object of the present invention is to provide a relatively simply constructed valve of this nature which may be incorporated a -fuel supply line, and which may be operated or controlled by the use of a relatively small key.
The invention still further aims at the rovision of a valve of this character'which is so constructed that the adjustable and detachable parts thereof are eifectively housed in a strong casing towhich access. cannot be readily had.
Various other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described, and
' in part understood, from the following detailed description ofthe resent preferred embodiment, the same belng illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a-lock-controlled valve constructed according to the present invention, the same bein illustrated as applied to a fuel-supply an a device adapted to receive the fuel.
Fig. 2 isv a top plan view of the same, the
' upper portion of the valve being shown in section on the'line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged transverse sectionalview taken through Fig. 1 on the line 3-3.
. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. g
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a key which may be employed for operating the valve.

LOCK-GON'TROLLED VALVE.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918 Serial 1%. 152,115.
Referring to this drawing, wherein like parts are designated by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, A designates a source of fluid supply, such as a pipe, and B designates a device adapted to i-eiceive the fuel, such as a carbureter or the The valve of this invention comprises a casing or body-10 which is preferably of spherical form, as disclosed, and which is made of steel or other relatively hard .substance. The valve casing 10 is provided with a through port 11 which isco-extensive with the opposite end projections 12 and 13 adapted to besecured in any suitable manner to the parts A and B. The casing 10 is provided upon its upper side with a cylindrical hollow projection 14 having an inturned flange 15 at its upper end. The opening in the projection 14 is in the form of a counter-bore which is formed from the bottom upwardly through the valve body 10,
and is adapted to receive therein a rotatable locking pin 18 which is introduced laterally through the projection 14 and engages through the adjacent side of the cylinder 17. The disk 16 is-provided at its central portion with a diametrically extending key-hole or slot .19, and the cylinder 17 is provided with a plurality of guards 20 which project from the inner wall of the same.
The valve casing or bodylO is provided with a counter-bore at the lower end of the large axial opening which tapers downwardly toward the open'end of the body 10.
The-lower or outer end of the sleeve 21 is externally reduced to provide an annular projection 22, and a turning plug 23 is fitted in the sleeve 21 and is correspondingly tapered to fit snugly therein. A disk or plate 24 is secured by means of a screw 25 to the reduced end of the turning plug'23 and overlaps at its marginal edge the cylindrical prfl ject'ion 22 of the sleeve 21. The open end of the counter-bore in the casing 10 is closed by a screw plug 26 which conforms at its exterior surface to the spherical contour of the casing, and which has a concavity 2'? at its inner end to accommodate the plate 24 and the screw 25.
The upper end of the turningplug 23 is provided with a relatively deep diametrically extending slot 28 arranged in axial alinement with the cylinder 1'? and the our: 16.
A gasket or washer29 is fitted in the inner end, of the counter-bore of the casing 1.0
and is held in position by the adjacent end of the sleeve 21, the latter being held rigidly against the washer 29 by the-annular upstanding flan e 30 of the plug 26.
As shown in ig. 5, the key 31 employed is of' the double-bitted flat type and is provided in its opposite edges with two sets of kerfs 32 and 33 adapted to receive therethrough the guards 20 when the key 31 is turned for registering the lower end of the blade of the key with the slot 28 of the turn.- ing plug 23, and for subsequently turning the key after the latter has been placed in the slot 28.
In operatiomit is only necessary to insert the key 31 through. the slot 19 of the disk 16, and to turn the key with the disk 16 until the lower end of the key blade passes between the transversely registering slots hetween each adjacent pair of theguards 20. It will be notedparticularly iromlligs. and 3, that the'leuards 20 are arranged in the form of quadrants with their adjacent edges closely spaced apart to provide intersecting diametrically extending passages or slots through which the blade may pass, it
will also be noted that the guards 20 are arranged in vertical ahnement n the present instance, although it 1s of course understood that various arrangements and numbers of the guards 20 may be resorted'to,
vWhen the key blade is inserted, and it it does not register with the. slot 28 in the turning plus 23, the upper end of the turning: plug will hold the key from being further depressed. in this latter'position, the keris 32' register with. the guards 20 and the key 31 with the disk 16 may be turned in either aaaaeia were it not'f'or the kerfs 32, the latter admitting the turning of the proper key in the.
barrel to register with the s lot 'lhe guards 20 are arranged in registering groups of four each equi-distantly spaced in a circular row andprovide a. pair of interseating longitudinal key ways in the barrel arranged at right angles to each other.- v 1 The key 31 maynow be turned with the 'disklG- and the turning plug 23 to rotate the latter through a quarter turn and open or close the through passage 11 in the casing 10, I
It will thus be seen that a key having a blade of the required thickness must be used, and that the key must have the kerfs 32 and 33 formed correspondingly to the number and the location of the guards 20 in the nonrotatable cylinder 17.
it .is of course understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of constructionv of the above specifically described valve and the locking means therefor without departing from the spirit of this invention, and being restricted only by the scope of the following 'claims.
I claim:
i. In a valve, the combination of an integral casing having the usualfiuidpassage therethrough and provided with a projection whose axis lies at an angle to the fluid passage, thecasing'having a bore therein extending into "the projection and coaxial therewith reduced at the outer'end of the.
